Pleated skirts have a very rich and ancient history. For centuries, they are now forgotten, then again put forward on a fashionable pedestal.
Today, such skirts are again at the peak of popularity. Modern women of fashion managed to miss the feminine, romantic styles, so skirts in retro style have become incredibly relevant.
Not many of us pay attention to the fact that the folds on different models of skirts and dresses can differ significantly - it all depends on how this product is tailored.
In this article, we will tell you about skirts with oncoming folds: their features, as well as how to sew a similar skirt yourself.
Features
In one of the articles we spoke in detail about skirts with bow folds. In fact, bow and bow folds are one and the same thing. Oncoming folds, if you look at them from the front of the product, are bent towards each other.
If you turn the product over and look at it from the wrong side, then the folds will be directed in opposite directions - such folds are called bow folds. Thus, oncoming folds are the other side of the bow folds.
The skirt with oncoming folds can be absolutely any length - from mini to maxi. The styles are also very diverse.
Not only wide magnificent skirts, but also narrowed or straight models drape with oncoming folds. For example, a pencil skirt decorated with folds along the hem or a tulip skirt with two or three deep oncoming folds looks very interesting.
To form beautiful, stable pleats, it is important to choose the right skirt material.
For winter models, dense, warm fabrics, such as wool or tweed, are used. For the spring-autumn season, jeans or a classic blazer are often chosen.In summer, preference is given to lighter materials - chiffon, cotton, lace, viscose, etc.
What to wear?
The skirt with oncoming folds looks very elegant and a little flirty. It can be combined with things in a variety of styles: it all depends on the model and material of the skirt itself.
For example, summer models of light, airy fabrics are usually quite voluminous, so it is better to combine them with a tight or straight top, whether it is a thin top, T-shirt or T-shirt.
A short denim jacket or denim shirt, knotted at the waist, also harmoniously fits here.
Skirts with counter pleats made of thick materials are often worn as an element of a business suit. In this case, they are well combined with formal shirts or more informal blouses (depending on the dress code), turtlenecks or cardigans.
If the skirt has a tight-fitting or semi-tight-fitting silhouette, then the top may be more loose.
Any skirt, including those with oncoming folds, looks best together with high-heeled shoes. Therefore, you can combine it with office shoes, sandals, boots or high-heeled boots.
Those who prefer a flat sole can wear elegant slippers without a heel, ballet shoes or even sneakers for such a skirt.
How to sew?
If you possess at least minimal knowledge in the field of cutting and sewing, then creating a skirt with oncoming folds will not be a big problem for you. In addition, a pattern is not needed for this model - all measurements are transferred immediately to the fabric.
The most important thing is to correctly calculate the folds. But first you need to stock up on tools and materials for work. So, we need:
- the cloth;
- lightning (preferably hidden and matching the fabric);
- tailor scissors;
- tailor meter;
- threads
- crayon, a piece of soap or a washable marker;
- set of pins and needles;
- sewing machine;
- iron.
Patterns
- Before wearing markings, the material needs to be ironed well. Then we spread it on a flat, solid surface.
- Getting started: we need to know the length of the skirt, as well as the waist and hips.
- We determine the desired length of the skirt, add 3 cm to the hem and mark the length on the fabric (the belt does not need to be taken into account). We trim the canvas in length.
- Next, we need to calculate the number, width and depth of the folds. We described in detail how to do this in the article “Skirts with bow pleats”.
- In accordance with the calculations made, mark the location of the folds on the canvas.
Sewing
- The next important step is the formation of folds. We fix each fold with pins and basting, then iron it carefully - approximately 1/3 of the entire length.
- The upper edge of the product should be processed by attaching a belt to it. To give the belt rigidity, we put in it an adhesive "spider web".
- Having sewn a belt, we sew a secret zipper in the middle seam of the product. Then we sweep and grind the middle seam.
- We process the hem of the skirt: we bend the bottom edge by 1 cm, iron well, then bend another 2 cm; we process the edge of the finishing lowercase.
