Every fashionista should have this stylish piece of clothing in her wardrobe. Do you want to learn how to sew a sun skirt with your own hands and what patterns to use? So this article is for you!

Consider the step-by-step process of creating a fashionable skirt, show all the options - from simple to complex - and tell you what to wear with it!

How much fabric do you need?

The first and most difficult thing in this business is the choice of fabric. Regardless of the season for which the skirt is sewn, it is desirable that it keeps its shape. Therefore, it is better to take dense smooth material.

If you start from fashion trends when choosing fabrics, you can focus on cotton, light viscose or linen - they are always relevant. Also, jeans, small velveteen, jacquard are recently considered to be fashionable fabrics.

Such fabrics as organza, taffeta, satin, velor hold excellent shape. Depending on the style in which you see your future sun skirt, you can choose one of these options.

When you decide on the material, calculate how much you need.

Necessary calculations

To calculate the right amount of fabric, make the following measurements:

  1. Determine how long the skirt should be (this depends entirely on your wishes and physique).
  2. Measure the circumference of your waist.

Now you can make a formula to calculate the right amount of tissue: the length of the future skirt, multiplied by 2 + waist circumference, divided by 2 + 10 cm (designed for shrinkage of fabric and allowances).

That is, if you plan to get a skirt with a length of 50 cm, and a girth of your waist 60 cm, then you need a piece of fabric 140 cm long [(50 x 2) + (60/2) + 10]. These calculations will be enough to buy the required amount of fabric.

You will also need adhesive tape to process the belt. Its width is selected so that it coincides with the width of the belt (and you determine it individually, to your taste). When everything you need is purchased, you can begin the process of cutting.

How to cut a skirt?

The style of the sun is considered one of the simplest. Even a novice seamstress can easily open such a skirt.

For work you will need:

  • big table;
  • scissors;
  • pins
  • crayon or remnant (sharpened);
  • measuring tape;
  • a circle whose diameter exceeds your waist circumference by 3 cm (allowances (1.5 and 1.5 cm) along the middle seam) - this may be a plate.

When the workplace is ready, proceed to preparing the fabric for cutting.

First of all, it is necessary to check the fabric for the presence of marriage (if there is one, you need to avoid this place when cutting). Next, determine which side is the front and which side is the wrong side.

Before proceeding directly to the cutting, the fabric must be ironed from the wrong side using steam. Here, not only an aesthetic, but also a practical goal is pursued - this is how the material will shrink.

Now you can cut! Instruction:

  • Fold the fabric in half with the front side inward, the edges should lie horizontally closer to you. Attach both halves of the fabric to each other with pins.
  • Set the skirt length + 2 cm along the fold line (allowance for the hem of the bottom edge). Mark the control point.
  • Take the circle of the diameter specified above, attach to the control point so that its middle passes through the fold line, and outline. This is your skirt topline.
  • With the help of a measuring tape, postpone the length of the skirt several times (in all directions) from the obtained line several times (in all directions), adding 1.5-2 cm to the allowance. Make control points, then connect them together. So you get the bottom cut line of the skirt.
  • On the upper cut line of the skirt, mark up an allowance for sewing on the belt - 1 cm.
  • Start the cut from the bottom of the skirt. Cut off excess fabric along the intended line.
  • Next, cut the excess fabric along the top line.
  • On a bend on one side, make a cut (from edge to edge). There will be a seam behind the skirt (in the middle).

Cutting belts

To do this, you will need scraps of fabric that remained from the cutting of the skirt, and adhesive tape.

The belt for the skirt-sun is a regular rectangle. Its length is equal to the circumference of the waist, to which 3 cm are added (1.5 cm each for allowances for seams). The width of the belt is determined by you to your taste, but multiply the desired width of the finished belt by two and be sure to add another 2 cm (to allowance).

Measure the required values on the fabric, chart, cut.

Patterns

The cutting process described above is elementary and does not require preliminary construction of the pattern. But for more peace of mind and confidence in the success of the enterprise, you can take the ready-made patterns that we offer you.

Among them is a pattern of an elegant model of a skirt-sun on a yoke. In her case, you can experiment with length by choosing the ideal one (maxi, midi or mini).

You can also, using the simplest pattern of a skirt-sun, play with multi-layering, making a second or even third layer on the same patterns. Then you should choose more airy fabrics for the lower layers.

The entire skirt can be made of translucent materials. Here is endless scope for your imagination!

Sewing process

To finish creating your perfect sun skirt, you need to install a sewing machine and all the necessary accessories (threads, scissors, needles, etc.) on your desktop.

You may also need an iron and pins; they also should not be far removed. Each seam will need to be first manually marked (with a thread and a needle), then try on a skirt, and only after that, if everything lies down and sits on you well, do the final seams on a typewriter.

We will consider two options for tailoring: the simplest type of skirt is the sun and the model is a bit more complex, but also more universal.

How to sew a simple model on an elastic band?

For starters, you can try to create the most elementary variation of a skirt-sun. To do this, you need to uncover the model proposed above, but without a belt. The allowance on the upper cut line in this case will need 4 cm more - the elastic will be sewn here.

An incision for the seam behind the skirt should also not be done in this case. That is, to get the simplest skirt-sun, you need to follow the first 7 steps given in the instructions above.

Then do the following:

  • Measure the elastic at the waist. When trying on, take the elastic slightly in a stretch so that it then holds the skirt securely (if you take exactly the girth, the skirt may fall off).
  • Wrap the elastic in the upper edge of the skirt, while slightly tacking the fabric. Pull by hand, try on. If the skirt sits perfectly, stitch the elastic on the typewriter.
  • The final action is the processing of the lower edge of the skirt. Twist the edge twice (the first time by 0.5 cm, the second by 1 cm). Carefully iron each fold. Draw, try on. If the length suits - you can sew on a typewriter. If the fabric is too thin, you can sew the edges on the overlock with a small zigzag stitch.

4. That's all! The simplest sun skirt is ready!

Sewing a sun-skirt with a zipper

The model, on the example of which we taught you to cut a skirt-sun a little higher, is sewn with zipper. Therefore, we will move from the cutting workshop to a step-by-step guide to tailoring. If you cut the belt last, then start the assembly process of the product just from it.

The mechanism of action is as follows:

  1. With glue tape, process the belt pattern along the entire length and half the width. To do this, place adhesive tape on the wrong side of the future belt. Position it so that it stretches along the entire length and occupies half the width of the workpiece for the belt (the upper edge of the tape should coincide with the upper edge of the fabric).
  2. Attach the tape to the fabric using an iron. Iron through a piece of unnecessary cotton, otherwise you will spoil the sole of the iron. Before gluing the tape, it is better to moisten a little. Fold the belt in half (lengthwise) so that the seamy sides are inside and the sections are aligned. And in this position, iron again. The final touch - giving the belt a final shape. To do this, iron it again, greatly pulling the cut and ironing the bend. So the belt will fit tightly around the waist. Be sure to overcast a section of the belt after this.
  3. Now sweep the middle seam at the back of the skirt, leaving a place for a zipper on top (taking into account the width of the belt, because it starts on it).
  4. The next step is to attach the belt (the part on which the sections are connected) to the top of the skirt. At the same time, fasten the belt so that it extends from one edge from the back of the skirt to the other (here it will be connected to the skirt by a zipper). Now you can try on a skirt.
  5. Once the fitting has shown perfect results, you can machine the middle seam at the back of the skirt.
  6. Now sew the zipper.
  7. Sew the bottom of the skirt by folding the edges as described above (see How to sew a simple model on an elastic band?)
  8. Process the slices on the overlock.
  9. Iron allowances and fasten.
  10. Unscrew the finished skirt on the front side and iron the fastener and all seams again with an iron.

The skirt is ready!

What to wear?

In conclusion, I would like to give some fashionable tips on the combination of a skirt-sun with other wardrobe items:

  • Since the skirt-sun is a very bright thing, the top to it must be selected more restrained, simple cut. For example, a blouse with lace or satin, a cardigan, a jacket or even just a top will ideally combine with it.
  • With a short skirt, the sun looks great cropped sweater free cut and a moderate amount of jewelry, matching the style of such an ensemble. It may be something in the style of boho.
  • The lush summer skirts-sun made of airy fabrics are in perfect harmony with tight-fitting tops and pumps.
