Jeans are incredibly comfortable and practical. High-quality jeans can last for years, but even with old, worn pants sometimes I really do not want to stay. It’s especially a shame if the presentation of jeans spoils a single hole on the knee or an indelible stain.

However, it is not necessary to throw away your favorite jeans if you can no longer wear them. A great way to give a second life to old things is to turn them into new ones. We suggest you sew a stylish denim skirt out of pants that are no longer needed. Read about how to do it yourself in our article today.

Short denim skirt

There are dozens of varieties of denim skirts - short and long, narrow and lush. Each of the patterns is sewn differently, taking into account the features of the style. The easiest option that even an inexperienced seamstress can easily cope with is a mini-skirt.

To make a short skirt out of old jeans, you will need the following materials and accessories:

  • sewing spreader;
  • wax crayon or remnant;
  • safety pins;
  • threads
  • cutting scissors;
  • ruler or tailor meter;
  • sewing machine.

The first thing to do is decide on the length of the skirt. The ideal length of a short skirt can be determined by standing in front of the mirror and stretching out your arms at the seams. The line drawn from the fingertips of one hand to the other is the optimal length of the hem.

Armed with a ruler, outline on the jeans the line along which they will be cropped. Do not forget to leave 1.5-2 cm for hem processing.

Then take the spreader and carefully dissolve the inner seams on the legs. The middle seam needs to be torn up to the zipper.

Then overlap the two halves of the workpiece on top of each other and sew a new middle seam in front and back.Fold the hem of the skirt inward and work the hem on the sewing machine.

A short skirt of old jeans is ready!

Flared skirt

If you didn’t have skinny jeans or “pipes” at your disposal, but jeans with wide legs such as “pipes” or “flares”, then you can make a mid-length a-line skirt from them.

A flared skirt is sewn from the bottom of the pants, and the top can be used for other needs, for example, to make shorts out of it.

  • Stage 1. First you need to take measurements - waist, hip, and skirt lengths. Based on these data, you can determine at what height jeans should be trimmed. Pants need to be trimmed not only from above, but also from below, since the old hem is probably already quite worn out and looks unpresentable. At the next stage, you should flog all the seams on the cut legs. As a result, you should get four pieces of fabric. Carefully smooth each part and steam.
  • Stage 2. Now you can do the pattern of the product. The pattern is very simple: it is a detail in the form of a trapezoid. The upper part of the trapezoid is the waist girth divided by four, and the lower part is the desired width of the skirt divided by four. The length of the sides of the trapezoid is the length of the skirt plus the margin for hem. It is necessary to cut such a detail from each piece of fabric.
  • Step 3. Next, assemble the skirt of the four elements, the trapezoid. Sew together all the parts, then put them on a belt with an elastic band, sewn from scraps of jeans or from any other material. The bottom edge is processed as usual.

Midi skirt

A straight skirt of medium length can be sewn from old jeans of any style. Skinny jeans are suitable for a tight pencil skirt, regular jeans for a simple straight skirt, and wide jeans for a flared model.

  1. To get a midi skirt, the pants will have to be cut at about the level of the knees. Do not throw away the cropped trouser legs - with their help you can "arrange" the skirt in width.
  2. After you cut the jeans to the desired length, the most important stage of work follows - opening the inner seams. This must be done very carefully so as not to damage the fabric. It is best to use a special sewing spreader resembling a pointed hook for these purposes. Leave the side seams as is.
  3. Lay the skirt blank on a flat, solid surface. Then place between the legs a rectangular piece of fabric cut from cropped legs. Pin it with pins. Observing a slight overlap, stitch the insert to the edges of the legs. Turning the skirt inside out, cut off the excess fabric.
  4. Then again turn the product to the front side and place it with the clasp down. Now you need to sew on each other two leggings. First connect them with pins, then stitch the seam on the machine.
  5. After trying on the skirt, you can begin to process the lower edge. There are several options: bend and sew, overlock, or pull several threads from the hem, leaving a careless fringe.

Boho style

One of the most popular styles of recent fashion seasons is boho. The name of this style comes from the word bohemian, that is, "bohemian." This is the style of creative people; it is a combination of seemingly incompatible components: gypsy motifs, glamor, "grandmother" things and hippie culture elements.

Things in the boho style are multi-layered skirts, colorful sundresses, vintage jewelry. Boho clothes are characterized by a small touch of antiquity, so a skirt of old, worn jeans will fit into it as well as possible.

We suggest you not be satisfied with denim alone, but add bright fabrics and floral designs. If you have a summer dress or dress that you have not worn for a long time, you can put it into business. Thus, from two unnecessary things you will get a new, stylish skirt in which you go through more than one summer.

  1. The upper part of the skirt will be made of jeans, and the bottom of the dress.First of all, you should trim the jeans to the desired length (a few centimeters below the pockets) and cut off the bodice at the sundress. It is not necessary to immediately throw away the cut off parts - you can make a decor for a skirt from them or use them to create other things.
  2. From the cut off legs you need to cut several wide ribbons - these will be the frills of the skirt. You can also make frills from the lining or from the bodice of the sundress. Sewed ribbons from different fabrics are sewn into one long one. You will need as many long ribbons as many frills you want to sew to the hem of the skirt.
  3. Stitch frills to the hem of the skirt. Do not forget to process the edges so that the fabric does not crumble and does not creep onto the threads. Sew the top and bottom of the skirt. The finished product can be decorated with flowers, patches, ribbons and frills made from scraps of fabric.

In the technique of "Patchwork"

Patchwork, despite its modern name, is one of the oldest needlework techniques. For a long time, our thrifty ancestors were engaged in sewing from scraps of fabric - it was important for them to find application for each piece of fabric.

If earlier in the technique of patchwork sewing household goods were created - rugs, bedspreads, etc., today clothes and accessories for patchwork are popular. You should start learning this technique with the simplest things, for example, remaking old jeans in a skirt.

The first thing to do is decide on the style of the skirt. Then take the necessary measurements, make a pattern. Its shape will depend on the selected product model.

From jeans you will need not only the upper part, but also the leg pants - they need to be cut into square or rectangular pieces of different sizes.

To make the skirt look more interesting, it is advisable to use several types of denim, so you can put on a few jeans that have become unusable. In addition to denim, other fabrics can also be used.

  • From the cut pieces, like from a mosaic, assemble the lower part of the skirt in accordance with the pattern.
  • First, the flaps need to be fastened with pins, and then sew on hands or sew on a typewriter.
  • Next, sew the bottom of the skirt to the top, made of jeans. If desired, the product can be decorated with buttons, ribbons, lace and other decorative elements.
