As a rule, when compiling a resume, we provide information about the education, experience, various achievements, but do not mention the reasons for dismissal from previous jobs. This item is not mandatory, but the recruiter, one way or another, will take an interest in the reason for the decision to change the place of work. You should prepare for this issue by indicating primary information in the summary. How to do it right - read below.

Section filling rules

Immediately understand for yourself that whatever the reason, you should not write about it in full detail. The text should be concise, not emotional. However, you should be prepared to answer the questions of the HR manager if he asks you to clarify some points.

How to fill out the dismissal section correctly? Here are the basic rules.

  • Write down the actual reason for leaving work, that is, the one indicated in your work book. Do not invent or embellish anything. In general, try not to focus on this subsection in the summary.
  • If you worked informally and there are no entries in the labor, write the real reason for leavingbut again, without emotion, detail, or fiction. When a recruiter at an interview asks you to explain your departure, try to get rid of 2-3 general “dry” phrases.
  • It happens that with the previous employer you parted, to put it mildly, not friends, and a not-so-attractive entry appeared in the workbook. In this case, there are 2 ways: to write everything as it is or to try to "mask" the reason. Let's consider both options in more detail.

If you truthfully admitted that you were “gone”, try to explain as gently as possible that there was a slight mutual misunderstanding that made further cooperation if not impossible, then certainly undesirable and unattractive for both parties. You have drawn conclusions from this situation and will try to prevent its occurrence anymore. If you are ashamed of your leaving “not of your own free will” and you want to hide it from a potential employer, you can write in the resume that the dismissal occurred “by agreement of the parties”.

However, the HR manager may ask at a personal meeting what is hidden behind this wording and will look into the work book, where the reason for dismissal will be clearly indicated (article). Then, if you can’t clearly explain why it came to the conflict and “resulted” in this kind of result, you won’t be hired.

Which is better to indicate?

As practice shows, most often the reasons for dismissal are:

  • low wages;
  • lack of career prospects;
  • conflicts with management;
  • the impossibility of self-development;
  • uninteresting tasks;
  • irregular payroll;
  • unpleasant atmosphere in the team;
  • informal employment;
  • lack of freedom of action in decision making;
  • tough work schedule.

Key Options

The most “valid” reasons for changing jobs are the following:

  • bankruptcy (liquidation) of the company or structural unit in which the employee worked;
  • lack of career prospects if you want to have one;
  • expiration of an employment contract or work visa (if you work abroad);
  • the company does not formalize its employees;
  • moving to a new place of residence or changing the location of the office;
  • The position has been removed from the staff of the company;
  • low wages without the prospect of an increase;
  • the company was reorganized, after which there were changes in the management approach.

Change of activity

There are also frequent situations when a person wants to change work to a completely different one, unlike any of his previous activities. Then, the reasons for the dismissal can be written as follows.

  • «I want to change the scope of activity, since I received an education (such-and-such) and I want to put my knowledge into practice, which is impossible when working in a company (name of the previous place of work), because it specializes (indicate what exactly). ”
  • «Change of activity due to unchanging range of actionsbrought to automatism, which impedes development and personal growth. "
  • Also, a person may want to change the scope of their professional skills, if he feels that he has “outgrown” his current position in connection with taking advanced training courses and accumulated many years of experience.

And if vertical promotion is impossible in this company, you have to leave.

Prohibited Wording

There are phrases that in no case can be written in the resume when mentioning the reasons for dismissal.

  • Never write anything negative about a former boss. Even if he really was, to put it mildly, an unpleasant and incompetent person, your hint should not slip in your resume. Otherwise, the recruiter may think that you are a person “making dirty linen out of the house,” who is unable to keep his mouth shut, and that the reputation of the company as a whole and the manager in particular may suffer.
  • Conflict situations with colleagues are also best left out of the resume.. Mentioning them will create the role of a person who does not know how to work in a team.
  • Do not write about violations of the Labor Code and the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation at the previous place of work.
  • If you didn’t leave due to conflicts and misunderstandings, and, for example, due to the fact that you do not like the external environment of the workplace (shabby walls, outdated furniture, lack of air conditioning, etc.n.), this is also not necessary to mention.
  • The need to go to work on weekends and holidays, non-payment of processing is also not what can be written in the resume.
  • There are situations when further work in a company is related to professional development. For some, this is a plus, but there are individuals who do not want and do not like to learn. They work calmly and comfortably, performing a familiar range of responsibilities. Therefore, they quit as soon as it comes to the need for training. This is also better not to mention in the resume - it will characterize you as a conservative person, not ready to adapt to the trends of the times.
  • If you received wages "in an envelope", this is also not worth writing about, as well as tax evasion and social benefits.

Examples

Now we give some life examples of indicating the reasons for dismissal and explain them.

The employee left the company of his own free will - this was the actual reason for the dismissal, indicated in the workbook. At the same time, he did not look for a vacancy with a higher level of salary or with an expanded range of responsibilities, that is, he was ready to receive an absolutely similar position. The recruiter could not help but ask what the care was connected with, so the following explanation was given: the previous job was within walking distance from the kindergarten, and now the child went to school and would like to work closer to her. This is a completely valid reason, therefore it will not cause suspicions and additional questions.

The applicant’s work book contains a notice of dismissal “by agreement of the parties”. In this case, it is best to write the following in a resume: the reason for dismissal is the lack of career prospects and higher wages or the desire to try your hand in a new direction of activity.

In fact, in the workbook there is an entry “of one’s own will”, but the real reason for leaving was often conflict situations with colleagues or higher authorities.

The applicant, of course, may be silent about this, but now it is often practiced calling the recruiter of previous jobs and collecting information about a potential candidate for the position - then the truth may come up.

Consider several options for getting out of the situation.

  • If a misunderstanding, which turned into an open conflict and made further cooperation impossible, occurred due to a refusal to raise wages, in the summary, you can indicate that there was no unanimity in matters of payment for the amount of work actually performed. It is forbidden to write something like "I worked (a) more than others, but the leader did not appreciate my efforts."
  • If you have been denied a promotion, It is recommended to write this: "the company has no career prospects." Wrong option: "I was (a) ready (a) to take a higher position, as I have the knowledge and skills to do this, but the manager refused to consider my candidacy."
  • In any team, conflicts often arise. At the same time, someone is considered the boss’s favorites, while others are considered outsiders. The bosses may also behave incorrectly, with some asking “in full”, while others forgiving for similar flaws. If you quit, becoming a persona non grata, then in the resume you can indicate the following: “they have stopped working conditions and there is no prospect of their improvement in the future”.

It is forbidden to write: “the management team of the company has a different attitude towards employees, in connection with which some of them are provided with better conditions and more lenient requirements”.

If suddenly an unpleasant situation occurred and you were fired according to the article for misconduct (absenteeism, systematic lateness, appearing at the workplace in a state of intoxication, etc.) or inconsistency of your position, and you made such an entry in the work book, the first thing I want to say - do not panic. Try to learn from what happened and no longer allow such mistakes. However, the question is what, in this case, indicate in the resume as the reason for dismissal, the only answer is the truth.

Do not try to denigrate colleagues and management by presenting yourself as an injured party. Honestly admit to the recruiter that there was a violation, that you did not cope with the obligations imposed on you, but made conclusions and will try to prevent the repetition of this in the future.

If you did not commit anything reprehensible, but you were fired, for example, during the probationary period because your practical knowledge and skills were too small to occupy this position, this is also not a reason for upsetting and hiding the truth. In the resume, you can indicate that at that point in time you really overestimated your strength, but after dismissal you got the relevant knowledge and are ready to do the job.

Summarizing all of the above, it can be noted that it is always better to tell the truth in a personal conversation with a recruiter and in compiling a resume, however, it needs to be presented succinctly, without emotions and most importantly, without exposing anyone in the dark, especially the former leader and colleagues.
