In the menu of bars and restaurants you will find many alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails for every taste. A cocktail is a multi-component drink that combines several different flavors. To serve such a popular treat, special dishes are used that differ in appearance and size. In the article, we consider cocktail glasses and glasses of various types.

Types of glasses

Glass containers of unusual shapes are surprising in variety. Remember that each drink has a specific texture, temperature and other characteristics. Some cocktails are layered, others are prepared by whipping and stirring. Serving glasses are developed taking into account the above features of the drink.

Martini

A glass for this drink is also called a cocktail glass. This type of packaging has a charming and sophisticated appearance. The bowl is made in the shape of a cone (triangle) and placed on a thin and long leg. The volume of a glass can vary from 100 to 250 milliliters.

It is worth noting that dishes of this form are used not only for martini, but also for other drinks based on vermouth.

Hurricane

There is an opinion that the shape of this glass was invented by chance when one of the furnaces exploded in a foundry. The molten glass, which shattered from a strong wind, took an irregular shape. Translated from English, the name of the drink translates as “hurricane”.

The main characteristic of the glass is a wide neck and a shape resembling a pear (with rounding at the bottom).

Below is a small and stable leg. The most popular volume is 440 ml, however, on sale you will find models with other sizes. Manufacturers of dishes began to make glasses of Hurricane on long and curved legs.Glasses of this type are also used to serve exotic and tropical cocktails.

Margarita

This type of dishes cannot be confused with others due to the non-standard shape. A bowl on a long and even leg consists of two parts: a deepened container and a wide neck. The glass was specially designed for this drink. The edges of the container cover the edge of salt or sugar. It is believed that the vessel was invented in Mexico.

Poco Grande

The capacity for a drink, which means "little giant", is considered universal. Utensils are actively used not only in restaurants and other similar establishments, but also at home. A bowl with a round neck and rounded down is on an even leg of medium length.

These glasses are well suited for mixed drinks and fruit cocktails. In rare cases, they are used for mulled wine and even beer.

Irish Coffee mug

The glass-mug for coffee in Irish outwardly looks like a bowl on a compact and stable leg, the height of which does not exceed two centimeters. On the side is a small pen. When creating the form, specialists were looking for a practical and convenient glass. Irish coffee is a hot drink that can be burned when consumed.

The size of the bowl may be different, depending on the type of drink and components. Glasses for irish coffee are great for serving the following drinks:

  • latte;
  • hot punch;
  • coffee with the addition of alcohol (whiskey, cognac, rum and other drinks).

There is information that a drink popular around the world was invented in the first half of the 19th century. Its author was Tom Sheriran, a local bartender. After that, a special glass was invented, using which it was convenient to serve and drink a drink.

Cocktail glasses

If earlier glasses were used only for a specific type of drink, now there are many types used for serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Tumbler switch

The first type of glass on which we stop is characterized by low walls and a thickened bottom. It was originally designed to try different types of spirits.

Due to the convex shape of the bottom, it could not be put on the table. Tasters constantly held the glass in their hands, while heating its contents. Due to this, the aroma of the drink was revealed with renewed vigor. Currently, this type of packaging has significantly expanded its purpose.

The oval capacity is great for non-alcoholic cocktails and juices.

Collins

The following type of dishes received such a name thanks to the Tom Collins cocktail. This is a tall cylindrical vessel. The volume varies from 280 to 410 ml. In bars, such glasses are often used to treat guests with fruit juice or soda. This practical dish is great for serving longs (large cocktails).

Old fashion

The name of this sustainable and practical glass means "old-fashioned." This name is associated with the classic and widespread alcoholic drink Old Fashioned. This is a mixture of bourbon, whiskey and cane sugar. Such a vessel characterizes a thick bottom and a small wall height. Size may vary. Often the walls of the glass are covered with textured patterns.

Highball

The next view has the shape of a cone and a volume that can range from 240 to 350 ml. Most often, such a vessel is chosen for serving drinks and cocktails without adding alcohol. For alcoholic compounds, it is also used, but only for those types of cocktails in which the components are mixed.

The glass got its name thanks to the cocktail of the same name, which was first served in a tall glass with a stable bottom.

Latte glass

The popular latte coffee drink consists of several layers. For a hot and aromatic delicacy, a special Latte Glass was developed.

Often the glass is paired with a small saucer, which is used for dessert.

The shape of the glass may be different, however, certain features still exist. Volume - from 100 to 300 mm.Glasses are made of transparent material so that its contents are visible. The narrow bottom expands to the apex. For greater practicality, many instances are supplemented with a handle.

Plastic glasses

With the onset of the hot season, the popularity of cocktails with ice cream and milk increases sharply. This delicious delicacy can be enjoyed not only in cafes and restaurants. It is often sold in portable tents in parks and city squares. In such conditions, it is inconvenient to use glassware and other breakable materials.

Currently, many manufacturers of disposable tableware make glasses for milkshakes from plastic.

This is a cheap and practical material. To make the drink convenient to carry and drink, milk and fruit shakes are sold in transparent glasses with a lid and a straw. At the top of the lid there is a special hole for a small spoon or tube. Such glasses have a standard shape, slightly expanding upward. Wall thickness may vary.

Paper cups

Another type of disposable tableware for soft drinks and milkshakes is glasses made of thick paper. The material is processed in such a way that the paper does not sag on contact with the liquid. As a rule, the kit comes with a cover made of thin plastic.

In the next video, you will find out which glasses are used in the bar and restaurant.
