Fur collars give outerwear a certain solidity and attractiveness, as well as additionally insulate the thing, so such jackets and down jackets are very popular. But over time, even the best quality fur is contaminated and loses its original appearance.

For a thing to last a long time without losing its aesthetic and practical qualities, it is important to know how to clean a fur collar at home.

Dry way

It is not recommended to wash the fur products, since when wet, the impregnation is washed off the material and the appearance of the collar deteriorates. A good alternative to the usual washing would be dry cleaning. The following products are used for such cleaning:

  • Talc. It will help remove greasy spots and dust from the product. With this method of cleaning, you need to sprinkle the collar with plenty of talcum powder, and then rub the powder into the fur. After 10-15 minutes, the talcum powder must be shaken off the product, and the residue can be removed with a hairdryer.
  • Flour. It is sieved in a clean container. The fur must be combed, after which it is necessary to sprinkle the product with flour. Next, you need to walk with a brush against the pile to distribute the flour over the entire surface. Then, with direct back and forth movements, rub the flour into the fur for 5 minutes. After this, the collar must be knocked out and combed with a wooden comb.
  • Starch. With its help it is convenient to process collars which come unfastened from clothes. The product is placed in a plastic bag and covered with starch. After that, the package must be shaken. Further, the fur is brushed directly through polyethylene. When cleaning is completed, the collar is shaken off from starch residues and thoroughly ventilated.
  • Bran (wheat or rye). In a non-stick pan over a small fire, it is necessary to heat, not forgetting to stir, about 350 g of bran. The fur product must be placed on a clean cloth and sprinkled with hot bran. Leading the palms against the pile, it is necessary to rub the product into the fur. Then the product is combed out with a comb with rare cloves.
  • Salt and semolina. Bulk products are suitable for short-collar cleaning. The products are mixed in a ratio of 1 to 1. The fur product is sprinkled with the finished mixture, after which the pile is combed with fingers and then with a brush.

Semolina and salt, which absorbed dirt, are shaken off the collar. The procedure is repeated until the bulk mixture stops darkening and rolling.

Wet method

Collars with long nap or thick fur are better suited to wet cleaning. In addition, wet cleaning is more gentle than the usual washing of the product. With this method of processing fur products, the following tools are used:

  • Gel for washing dishes. The detergent is mixed with a little water. The resulting solution is thoroughly whipped, after which a thick foam is applied to the fur with a soft sponge. Then the foam must be removed with a cloth moistened with water. The fur is thoroughly dried and combed.
  • Liquid powder for delicate fabrics or shampoo. The method of cleaning the product with liquid powder or shampoo is similar to the method with the use of dishwashing gel.
  • A solution of ammonia and salt. In a glass of water, you need to dissolve two teaspoons of salt and a teaspoon of ammonia. The solution is poured into a spray gun and sprayed on the surface of the collar. So that the solution does not penetrate the skin, the product is turned on a clean cloth with the fur down and left for 30 minutes. Then the fur is thoroughly wiped with a soft damp sponge, removing the remaining solution from the pile.
  • Petrol. Using a cotton swab, gasoline is applied to the pollution without touching the undercoat. After cleaning, the fur is sprayed with water from the spray gun. At the drying stage, the fur must be combed periodically.

Natural fur

When choosing a product for processing collars made of natural fur, preference should be given to options suitable for dry cleaning. A full wash can ruin the product. When cleaning a collar made of natural material, it is worth remembering several basic rules:

  • Artificially colored fur cannot be cleaned using the wet method. Otherwise, the color of the collar may change or fade.
  • The collar must not be dried in direct sunlight or near a battery or other heating equipment. Drying is carried out at room temperature.
  • In the drying process, the peeled collar must be periodically combed, either along or against the pile. Such actions will allow the pile to maintain its structure.

The arctic fox collar is cleaned of contaminants using talcum powder or baby powder, which does not include oil. These products are able to completely absorb the fat from a product made of Arctic fox, but this method is only suitable for light fur. For dark products, it is worth using the wet cleaning method - using a cleaning agent or shampoo.

The fur from the silver fox is cleaned by applying with a cotton swab in the direction of the pile of gasoline or foam from detergent and shampoo. After that, the remnants of the applied product are removed from the fur with a wet cotton swab. For cleaning products from silver fox, semolina or starch can be used.

Fur of nutria, otter or beaver is worse cleaned, due to the special structure of the pile. The pile of such furs is long, and the undercoat is quite short. All dirt accumulates in the undercoat, which complicates its complete removal. You can clean such a product with the help of river sand.

The sand must be heated on fire and rubbed into the fur in a circular motion. After a few minutes from the collar you need to shake off the remnants of the bulk product.

Artificial pile

Faux fur is less delicate than natural. The faux fur collar can be washed manually in a solution of warm water (30 degrees) and powder for wool. The product must be soaked in the solution for 5 minutes, then rinse it under the shower.

Do not squeeze the collar - the water should drain itself, for which the product must be suspended. After drying, the fur needs to be combed.

The product made of artificial fur can be washed in a washing machine, setting the delicate mode without spinning. Soap solution helps to remove greasy stains from the product. A solution of laundry soap treats contaminated areas of the collar, or the product is carefully washed by hand.

A mixture of gasoline and starch can be used to remove stubborn stains. To clean the product from dust, just use a conventional vacuum cleaner.

Remove yellowness

It is almost impossible to remove yellowness from light fur. Even dry cleaners can offer only partial removal of yellow spots and lightening of the pile. At home, hydrogen peroxide will help get rid of yellowness. Water and peroxide are mixed in a ratio of 2: 1. The collar is wiped with a sponge moistened in a solution, after which it is ventilated and thoroughly dried.

Another tool that is used to remove yellow spots from white fur is potato starch. The collar is sprinkled with starch. Then within 15 minutes it is necessary to carry out such movements as if you are washing the thing manually. After that, the remains of potato starch are shaken off the collar, and the fur is combed out with a special brush.

Special tools

Many manufacturers offer complete sets for comprehensive care of fur products. Such kits consist mainly of special soap, cleaner and reducing agent. First, heavy impurities are treated with deep soap.

To remove residual contaminants, as well as dust and fresh spots, use a cleaner. A reducing agent is used to protect the structure of the fur. It is recommended to apply a reducing agent on the fur during active wear. (with a frequency of two weeks).

The main advantage of this set is the high-quality and gentle cleaning of the fur. The only negative is the high cost of professional cleaning products.

Additional recommendations

To remove dust from white fur and give the product an extra shine, you need to wipe the pile with a solution of the juice of one lemon in a glass of water. To clean the fur collar from traces of cosmetics, the contaminated areas are wiped with a swab moistened with pure medical alcohol.

With greasy spots, gasoline will do just fine.

It is worth noting that for such purposes only high-purity gasoline is suitable. You can make a more gentle means of gasoline by mixing it with starch to a paste-like state.
