Many often face the fact that a certain area in an apartment needs to be divided or separated from something. When repairing, zoning of a space, for example, a hall, is most often used. In order for the fenced area to look nice, beautiful and, most importantly, fit into the interior - many designers recommend using arched structures to divide the room. We will figure out what types of arches exist, how and what they are made of.

Features

Thanks to the arches, weightlessness and lightness are maintained indoors. Nothing more, but at the same time all the necessary functionality is preserved. This method is excellent in that it does not carry any unnecessary massiveness: doors, frame or canopy.

Typically, arches are used in cases where before this room were combined, for example, a corridor and a living room (hall), a corridor and a kitchen.

Design options

But until now, many believe that arched structures are characteristic only of the classics. But everything is completely wrong. Arch as an element fits perfectly into any design or style.

There are many areas where arched structures are used. Do not limit the flight of fancy, sometimes you need to make the most innovative decisions. After all, the arch allows you to experiment with space.

The first option that designers usually propose to consider is, of course, a classic. The arch in the classical style should be symmetrical, and its side edges should be identical to each other and be proportionally equal.

The upper part should resemble a hemisphere or, in another embodiment, a rectangle.

The arch can be decorated in different ways: add a little stucco moldings, moldings, lateral edges in the style of ancient Greece with its beautiful columns (here you can choose to either recreate the colonnade or make an imitation of a section of a column of stucco molding on the wall).

Thanks to design ideas the design of the arch now will not be difficult, even if you decide to use wood of noble species.

In the budget version, the classic arch can simply be pasted with wallpaper, as if to even it with a wall and hide, creating the feeling that the wall seemed to be sawn out from the inside.

The second option will be combining several styles and directions in one - these are non-standard forms.

Over the past decades, many in the repair trying to get away from everyday forms, boring colors and familiar solutions in the interior. And enthusiastically approach non-standard solutions.

Non-standard arches are those designs that do not remind us of the usual semi-arches, hemispheres or rectangles.

The main point that you should pay attention to in the implementation of custom design so that it looks harmoniously on both sides.

Non-standard arches are often used in the style of minimalism. But still there is a place for a flight of fancy, especially if some unique sections are provided for in the arch.

In places of these sections, for example, a mosaic panel can be placed, an imitation of masonry laid out, or small shelves made.

Varieties

Arches are divided into several types.

  • Square or rectangular. Such designs in their type are more reminiscent of large doorways without doors. Unpretentious in execution, therefore, perfectly fit into any interior. But it is worth noting that a smooth transition of zoning in this way cannot be achieved.
  • Round or hemisphere. The standard and widespread arch belongs to the classics due to its smooth lines and elegance in execution. Suitable for any interior and softens its smooth angular and sharp design.
  • Elliptical or oval. The elongated hemispherical arched structure, due to its height and width of the opening, visually stretches the space. This will be a good solution for a hallway with low ceilings or in the connection of two rooms with unequal ceiling heights.
  • Trapezoid - a non-standard and unusual arch, which due to its slightly sharp corners brings a certain dynamic to the interior.
  • Semi-park - An interesting solution that diversifies any design. Due to its shape, it visually extends the space and gives softness and smoothness to the arched opening.
  • Curly arches relate to non-standard arched structures and are direct proof that any non-standard idea can be realized. An arch in the shape of a wave, petal or carved - all this can be made independently.

Location

Most often, arches are located in the hallway and connect its space with the kitchen or hall.

  • The space between the kitchen and the corridor. Due to the fact that in small apartments any centimeter is worth its weight in gold, the combination of the kitchen and the corridor is considered an affordable option. You can immediately remove the doors, which will only interfere in a narrow corridor. In this case, the arch will not only harmoniously fit into the interior, but also visually increase both spaces.
  • The space between the entrance and the living room. Here, the arch will help get rid of inappropriate doors, visually expand the space. If it is a non-standard shape, it will add a twist to the interior.
  • Arches between the corridor and the bedroom usually do not, because the bedroom in the house should fully maintain autonomy and a sense of personal space.

Materials

For the manufacture of arch designs use various materials.

Drywall

It consists of two sheets of cardboard, between which is a solid gypsum board. It is considered the most common material from which any interior item can be easily mounted. The material is accessible and easy to operate.

It is quite easy to make an arch from your own hands from drywall. Drywall is suitable for the manufacture of arches of any shape, size and difficulty level.

It is considered a basic subject in decoration, because it can subsequently be easily glued onto a wallpaper, stucco molding or decorate with curtains.

Natural wood

This is not to say that this type of material is moody, but for installation, certain skills are needed to work with wood and tools. But if the arch will be executed in the classical style, then the tree is an ideal option. On it you can cut out patterns, paintings, inscriptions, certain relief details, and then cover it all with a layer of varnish for strength.

The advantage of wooden arches is, of course, durability. They will serve you for a long time, and at the same time they will be environmentally friendly and non-toxic.

But wood is expensive material. If, nevertheless, the choice fell on wood, but for some reason it is not possible to purchase it, then this material can be replaced with a laminated particleboard.

Metal

It is used as a frame for the future arch, then it is usually covered with drywall or plastic. Therefore, many do not even suspect the presence of metal parts in the arch. But if the room is dominated by a loft or high-tech style, in this case the arch is not hidden by anything, but, on the contrary, is even on display. It can be decorated with metal trim, stucco molding or installations.

The most important point, if you decide to use metal as the basis of the arch and not cover it with anything, then you should observe the balance of the use of metal in the interior.

Plastic

The cheapest and most affordable material of all the listed. Due to the cheapness of the material, you can even purchase a ready-made base for an arched structure (but, perhaps, it will be a standard oval). This material is very light and not so dense, so there will be no difficulties during installation, unlike metal or wood.

But you can also get soft plastic, which easily takes the necessary shape.

Of the minuses, it can be noted that plastic can be easily broken. Any unsuccessful interaction with something that is more dense in density than plastic will lead to deformation.

Plastic can be toxic, especially if it is exposed to direct sunlight, while it can fade if it does not decorate.

Decor

In addition to stucco and carved details, the arch can be decorated with other available methods.

  • Decorative stones. With the help of such stones, you can not only interestingly decorate the internal sections of the structure, but also lay out a panel or some specific motive that will connect two spaces separated by an arch.
  • Backlight. An interesting and easy to implement idea is an arch with illumination either in the form of LED strips or in the form of spotlights, which will be located along the entire arc or only on its upper part.
    • Tile or mosaic. Of mosaics, a panel is usually laid out that resonates with the interior. And also there are such design options where the design is beaten by glass or mirror mosaics.
    • Shelves. This option is suitable for those arches that imply a non-standard option. On the shelves you can store any trifle or indoor plants.
