Today, there are many ways to breathe new life into old objects, make them a special “highlight”, thereby updating the interior. Options for transforming things can be very different, for example, coloring, pasting with a special film, applying a screen pattern. In this case, you do not have to spend large amounts and purchase special equipment. One of the many options for decorating things and objects is decoupage.

Features of the technique

The word decoupage, like the technique itself, for people who are not close to art, sounds very mysterious, although decoupage compositions are found today at every turn. Translated from French, decoupage means “cutting”. The main principle of work involves gluing various surfaces with special patterns. The material used for the work depends entirely on the intention of the master.

The main image is most often cut out of thin hand-drawn paper, a little less often - from magazines and newspapers. The paper in its structure is able to take any shape of the decorated product, and firmly adheres to almost any surface, such as stone, wood or glass.

When creating jewelry using decoupage as the main image color napkins are used. The master cuts out the drawing he likes, and then glues the blank onto the surface of the decorated object. For example, everyone can take an old porcelain teapot, which has not been used for a long time, and decorate its old appearance with a special pattern.Then place the craft in a conspicuous place in the kitchen cabinet, thereby updating the interior.

Decoupage technique allows working not only with glass and porcelain products. Quite often, artists who want to update the appearance of furniture resort to this method.

Necessary materials and tools

To get the initial experience, the novice master needs to prepare the most minimal set of materials and tools, thanks to which it will be possible to create an unusual craft:

  • Toothpicks
  • cotton buds;
  • cotton wool;
  • toilet paper, napkins or newspapers.

All these materials are present in each house, in the absence of one or more elements, you can go to the nearest store.

Particular attention should be paid to the workspace. Only the accessories necessary for work should be located at hand.

A prerequisite of the working area is bright lighting. Do not forget about protecting your hands and face, since the final stage of work requires covering the finished surface with a fixing varnish.

In addition to the standard set of materials, novice masters need to acquire some elements of decorative jewelry. Consider a sample list.

  • Paints. It is best to use an acrylic composition.
  • Brushes. A kit consisting of different pile thicknesses should be purchased. The bristles of the brush should be soft, when wet, the hairs should not stick out in different directions.
  • Foam sponges. Despite their main purpose - to clean dishes, sponges are ideal for decorative work.
  • Acrylic lacquer.
  • Sandpaper. For grinding decoupage crafts, null or single is used.
  • Putty. An acrylic compound is ideal for decoupage.
  • Napkins. You will need to purchase several packages with different patterns. These images will be glued as the main decoration.
  • Glue. To work with paper, it is better to use PVA.
  • Scissors.
  • Stationery files with maximum density.
  • Fabric and lace. They will come in handy for drawing openwork edging.

Also, a novice master will need to find inspiration, compose a creative plan. And to start work in a good mood.

In fact, it is impossible to know in advance what materials will be needed to create a composition using decoupage technique. The master, planning to make a special decoration, can use any old things, for example, tights or leather from an old raincoat. Quite often, artistic natures use the most ordinary elements in decorative works, and even waste products, for example, eggshells. If you want to create a voluminous decor, prepare salt dough from which interesting figures are molded and create beautiful compositions.

Any process of creating a composition using decoupage technique can take several days. Each stage of work requires maximum drying of the material.

To reduce the time, professionals advise using a regular hairdryer.

Types and styles of design

Decoupage is a skillful imitation of art painting on any type of surface, using clippings from newspapers and magazines. To date, this technique has managed to combine a wide range of effects, types and styles.

All known types of decoupage have a basic foundation, and all of them are fundamentally different from each other.

  • Classic, it's straight. In the process of decorating, the image is glued to the surface of any objects, the main thing is that the basis for the work is smooth and the image is even. To fix the picture, a dry, wet or hot gluing method is used. It all depends on the texture of the image used. After drying, the finished decoupage is varnished and sanded with sandpaper until the effect is maximum smooth.
  • Back. It is used when working with glass surfaces. Selected images are not captured from the top of the product, but from the inside.Thus, the front side looks as if it is behind the glass.
  • Art. A special kind of imitation of art painting using various techniques and effects of background reunion and paper illustration is supposed. Thanks to this, a single canvas is created.
  • Volume. Here a relief surface is used, the volume of which is created using natural materials, for example, fabric.
  • Dekopatch. This variety is often called a patchwork. The surface to be decorated is covered with fragments of special paper purchased at an art store. Its structure is quite soft. Images can have different forms, but their essence should be unified. The collected fragments are tightly interconnected, resembling a sewn patchwork quilt.

Today, several styles are considered in the decoupage technique, among which the first place is taken by the country style with a hint of French Provence. Following him is shabby chic. Further on the steps of importance is the Victorian style, in which there is conservatism and natural classics. They are followed by a military style that prefers the use of strict forms complemented by metal. Next is the direction of simplicity, where special attention is paid to light shades of the palette.

As jewelry requires the use of lace, ruffle and guipure curls.

  • Provence Among this list, it occupies a separate step in popularity. When decoupage work is most often combined with images of rustic romance. The result is a rather gentle and very sensual composition.
  • Shabby chic which was mentioned earlier, involves an imitation of antiquity. The base of the item to be decorated should be painted in bright colors. Flowers are widely used as decorations.
  • Vintage by its qualities it is an indispensable style in the decoration of things and objects. It involves the use of monotonous images and colors.

Antique items, such as lace, should be used as decorations.

  • Very unusual and rather eccentric is steampunk. Work done in this style is related to fantastic abstractions, including technological processes. When creating steampunk masterpieces, small mechanisms, gears, nuts and various pieces of iron are used.
  • Quite rarely, decoupage masters use sea style, and all because of the complexity of the execution of small elements. When creating jewelry, salt dough is most often used, from which marine plants and living creatures are molded.

The stylistics of the decoupage technique design presupposes several acceptable effects, due to which a lot of ideas arise for creating special compositions.

  • Attrition. The execution of this effect can create a visual antiquity, therefore it is used when working in the style of shabby chic, emphasizing the aristocracy of the product. To create abrasion, wax is used, it rubs the surface of the painted elements, and then it is processed with sandpaper.
  • Craquelure. In simple terms, this is a cracking effect. It is created with the help of special varnishes applied between the coloring layers, as a rule, sharply contrasting with the background color. After the top layer has dried, small cracks of the desired shape appear on the surface of the finished product.
  • Patination. A dimming effect that on a visual basis looks like a smooth transition of the color palette. Most often used in corner processing.
  • Shading. This effect is created using a dry brush, applying a coloring composition, the borders of the used picture are skillfully masked here.
  • Toning. This effect is used by experienced craftsmen. Its essence lies in the application of colored spots over the finished decoupage. This may apply not only to paint, but also to glitter varnish.According to the technique of execution it is applied similarly to the shading process.
  • Potal. In this case, it is assumed that the surfaces are treated with silver and gold paints, allowing to complement the finished decoupage of the item with imitation of inlaid precious stones.

Basic rules of work

Considering a specific work, namely decoupage of bottles, novice masters need to follow the advice of experienced professionals, to avoid mistakes in the decoration process.

  1. For high-quality performance of decoupage, it is necessary to choose a bottle with a flat surface. It should not have embossed protrusions, even at the bottom.
  2. To accurately and accurately cut out the image intended for decoupage, you should use manicure scissors.
  3. The pattern selected on a napkin should be separated from the complex paper structure, otherwise the image will float, take on an accordion or lose its presentation.
  4. For accurate bonding of the image, use special decoupage glue. As an analogue, it is allowed to use PVA diluted with water according to the formula 1: 1.
  5. Sticking the picture must be done step by step. To begin with, the surface of the decorated product is lubricated. An image is applied on top, neatly leveled to avoid wrinkles or bubbles.
  6. Decoupage cards are pre-moistened with warm water, then dried on a towel.
  7. The dried pasted drawing is important to protect from moisture and mechanical damage.

Decorating workshops

    2. Primary surface treatment. The cleaned base must be primed with acrylic varnish or PVA. The treated base must dry.
    3. Background creation. A beginner is encouraged to use light colors for familiarization. In some cases, the coloring composition will have to be applied in two, or maybe three layers, so that the surface of the bottle becomes densely filled.
    4. Drawing images. The napkin pattern is carefully cut out and dipped in a container of water. These actions are necessary for high-quality application of the image on the painted surface.
    5. Fixing the picture. A varnish is applied over the glued wipe. If necessary, the drawing will need to be spread with a brush, as in some cases thin paper begins to be collected with an accordion.
    6. The final stage. After decoupage has dried, the bottle must be treated with sandpaper. Somewhere to create a shading effect or slightly age the composition. After drying the coloring composition, the bottle is covered with the last layer of varnish.

    For new year

    On New Year's Eve, champagne is considered an important drink. It is purchased both for your family and as a gift. It’s quite difficult to surprise a modern person with an ordinary bottle, and if you decorate the container using the decoupage technique, you will get the most unusual and unique present.

    In creating a New Year's gift, it’s useful:

    • bottle;
    • brush;
    • Christmas-themed napkin;
    • scissors;
    • acrylic paints;
    • decoupage varnish;
    • paper tape.

    Now you can start creating a masterpiece.

    1. All stickers and labels must be removed from the surface of the bottle. Then degrease the container.
    2. Next, the glass base is covered with several layers of acrylic paint. Each individual layer must dry naturally.
    3. The next stage of the work is varnishing.
    4. While the base dries, you need to prepare an image. Using nail scissors, the outline of the pattern is cut out, then glued to the surface of the bottle. When gluing a napkin, it is important to be extremely careful, otherwise the paper will tear and decoupage will be damaged.
    5. The surface of the napkin is coated with PVA glue.
    6. Next, treat the remainder of the bottle with acrylic paint with a suitable color shade.
    7. After drying the coloring composition, the bottle is again varnished.
    8. The final stage of work is grinding the surface to create maximum smoothness.

    In the process of creating a special composition, you can use any decor elements, the main thing is that they correspond to the festive theme.

    An interesting solution when decorating the bottle will be the use of toilet paper and eggshells.

    • In the first case, the container is cleaned, degreased and primed. Then, as always, a napkin is applied and covered with glue. On those places where there is no napkin, pieces of toilet paper are carefully glued. This will add volume to the bottle. After that, the bottle is varnished, painted, and again varnished.
    • The use of eggshells will allow to obtain the effect of cracking. But here it is important to observe the system - eggshells are applied with pigtails to small areas of the bottle, gradually. Then a napkin is glued. The remaining steps are no different from the previous options.
