Now velveteen has slightly lost its popularity. He was replaced by new materials. But the fabric still has many of its fans. Moreover, it is used not only for sewing solid clothes.

This is an excellent material for upholstering sofas, armchairs and other furniture. They use velveteen for upholstery of car seats, beautiful curtains are sewn from it.

Description and composition of the material

Velveteen is a dense fabric that has a velvety structure. Initially, velveteen was made only from cotton fabric, but now this composition is already rare, since the composition contains synthetic additives in the form of viscose or polyamide. It can contain only synthetic fibers.

It is difficult to confuse such fabric with any other; it looks rich and noble. The material has longitudinal strips, covered with a pile and a pleasant shine that occurs between the rows when playing light. In appearance, the fabric resembles velvet, but has scars on the coating, due to which the fabric looks attractive and is more resistant to abrasion. From the inside, it looks like a canvas. For dyeing, usually muted tones are used, less often you can find brighter colors of the fabric.

The first mention of velveteen appeared back in the Middle Ages. According to one source, the country of its origin is France. But the British disagree with this and believe that the first to start fabric production was in England.They still call this fabric "Manchester", believing that the first began to produce velveteen in Manchester. You can argue for a long time about the origin of the fabric, it is important that it still has great popularity.

The fabric was produced using technology that was kept secret for a long time and passed from the older generation to the younger. Cloaks were sewn from velveteen for nobles and royals, the fabric was used to sew elegant hats for gentlemen. Then the material began to be produced in larger quantities, but the first batches were delivered only to palaces, curtains were made of them. For nobles and kings sewed outfits in burgundy. Ordinary people were forbidden to wear clothes from this expensive material.

In Russia, material appeared at the end of the 19th century. Most often, curtains were sewn from it, and textiles were also used for decorative elements. But by the middle of the 20th century, fabric had become very popular, fashion designers and designers paid special attention to it and began to take it more often for sewing products.

Velveteen is often used for hauling old furniture and in the manufacture of new products. Textiles used for furniture can be made from natural or artificial fabrics made chemically, as well as from synthetic materials. All these materials have their advantages and disadvantages. When connecting different types of fibers, composite fabrics are made.

Furniture textiles must meet certain criteria:

  • It must have good fiber quality;
  • persistent coloring;
  • good breathability;
  • high fire safety;
  • high strength.

And also products should be easy to clean, be undemanding to care. Corduroy also has all these qualities.

Advantages and disadvantages

Velveteen is chosen for the manufacture of clothing and other textiles, because the material has several advantages.

  • Abrasion resistance. Products from this material are worn for a long time and do not wear out.
  • The canvas is quite durable it does not deform and does not stretch.
  • Body-pleasing material. From the front and the wrong side, it has a soft surface.

Care

But with improper care of products made of this material, they can lose their shape, become less attractive in appearance, change color. Such material requires delicate handling. If you do not follow the rules for caring for velveteen fabric, the material may sit or deform.

After purchasing the product, you should pay attention to the label indicating how to care for velveteen products. On it you can find information on how and at what temperature to wash and iron products, in what form to dry clothes.

Washing and drying

Velveteen items can be dry cleaned or washed on their own. So that the material does not lose its qualities, it is necessary to wash products from it manually.

To wash the velveteen things, take warm water in which the detergent is diluted. In addition, you can wash products in water with the addition of grated laundry soap.

Items from velveteen are placed in a container with detergent and wrinkled a little. Do not rub them strongly, squeeze, twist and squeeze. If things are stained, they are removed with a brush or sponge. To remove stains, a brush is carried along the fabric along the strips. Particular attention is paid to the processing of cuffs, collars, as well as pockets and places on the elbows and knees.

In the event that the products are very dirty, it is better to soak them in soapy water. Things are kept in this solution for about 20 minutes, then washed with soap or other detergent.

Products are washed well after washing. At the same time, they should be turned inside out and rinsed in cold water. Do this several times to get rid of stains after the powder. Rinsing the product into the water, it is recommended to add vinegar in a ratio of 1 tbsp. l table vinegar in 1 liter of water.

In a washing machine, velveteen products are not recommended to be washed, since the structure of the fabric may be damaged during the washing process. In this case, the product may be deformed.

If the label indicates that washing the product in the washing machine is allowed, then they are washed in a delicate mode. In the machine, things can be washed at a low temperature (no more than 40 degrees) without spin. During washing, it is recommended to add a little vinegar, for this, 4-5 tbsp. Are poured into the cell for the air conditioner. l acids. Instead of vinegar, you can use air conditioning.

So that the velvet items after washing do not deform, they are dried in a horizontal form or hung on a hanger. Consider the drying process in more detail.

To dry the products, first they are laid out on a towel or a sheet and wrapped in a roll.

Do not wrap the roll very tight, otherwise things may appear creases or creases.

Then the velveteen things are laid horizontally on a table or other surface, and you can also hang them on a coat hanger for drying. While the products will dry, it is recommended to straighten them, giving the desired shape.

Products from this material are not dried on a battery or near other heating appliances. And you should also protect the material from exposure to it when drying sunlight.

Ironing

Launched velveteen products are recommended to be ironed. To do this correctly, you need to hang the product on a coat hanger and straighten it well. Then, using the iron and choosing steam treatment, go over the entire surface, trying not to touch it.

The material is ironed from the wrong side. Do this at a temperature of no more than 100 degrees or in accordance with the recommendations on the product label. When ironing, they are covered with gauze or cotton cloth. Then things are turned out to process the pile from the front with a brush. This will give the product its original appearance.

You can replace the iron with a steam generator. With it, you can even get rid of strong creases on the fabric, without damaging the canvas. When processing the product, it is hung on a coat hanger and carried out by a generator with water heated to the desired temperature. Steaming things, starting with larger parts, and then collars, sleeves, belts and other small parts are steamed.

Take care of velveteen products:

  • using dry cleaning;
  • by washing things with your hands and then steaming.

With proper and regular care of velveteen products, they will retain their shape for a long time and not change color.

How to recover?

Before washing the product, it should be cleaned. In many cases, you can get rid of contamination simply by cleaning it without washing the product.

When washing, deformation of the product is possible, things can shrink, so dry methods for cleaning the material will be preferable.

  • First of all, you should clean the product from dust particles, pile, threads and other particles of litter. Remove it with a special roller or brush, conducting them on the surface.
  • To restore the appearance of the product, it is recommended to lower it into a ammonia solution. To make a solution, you need to drip a couple of drops of ammonia in 5 liters of water. Things from velveteen are put in the prepared solution for 10-15 minutes, then washed manually.
  • Ammonia is also used to remove stains on heavily soiled trousers, dresses, and home textiles. To get rid of stains, it is not recommended to use bleach and aggressive powders, detergents.

If spots have appeared on the velvet fabric that are difficult or impossible to remove, they can be tinted with paint or a special dye for fabrics can be used, which is selected according to the type of fabric.

When choosing a dye, it is important to determine the composition of the material. Therefore, it is worthwhile to study the label in advance and choose a dye intended for this material. So, for cotton material, paint intended for cotton and so on is taken.

When painting the product, it should be remembered that it is possible to re-update the color of the fabric and coating.

It is difficult to return the original color to products, especially if you do not take care of them in time. Therefore, products should be washed in accordance with the parameters indicated on the tag. For dark fabrics, you can buy special detergents and conditioners that help restore color and long-term preservation of the resulting shade.

To remove stains, it is better to choose enzyme powder or gel, because they will be able to cope with dirt even at low temperatures, and also return the shape to velveteen things.

You can return the product to its previous color by dyeing. But with chemical dyeing, thinning of the fibers is possible and, as a result, accelerated wear of the material.

To restore the faded black fabric, you can use other methods.

  • To restore the black color using a solution of tobacco. To prepare it, take 20 g of tobacco and dissolve it in 1.5 liters of water. This product is treated with a brush.
  • This tool is suitable for restoring brown things.
  • For staining products in yellow, coffee is suitable, it is added during rinsing things.
  • To return the lost black color, prepare a solution consisting of water and chopped walnut shells. To prepare it, add 1.5 g of shell in 1.5 l of water and boil for half an hour. After that, the solution is filtered, then with a brush they rub the products.

If things have lost their former color, baking soda can be added to the liquid when stained. When rinsing products in water add 1 tbsp. l table vinegar.

Painting at home does not always live up to expectations, so it is better to hand over things to special workshops. Experienced craftsmen will be able to quickly update the color of products, do it quickly, efficiently, without harming the material.
