Lining fabric is an indispensable part when sewing many types of clothing. Most people do not pay attention to it at all. However, the lining plays a significant role in clothing. With its help, some tissues do not crumble on cuts, things “keep” their shape well, and still maintain the necessary microclimate. Currently, there is a huge selection of different options for lining fabrics. Thanks to a wide range of materials, it is very easy to choose the desired option.

Composition and properties

Lining fabric is necessary for decorating things from the wrong side. This is necessary to preserve clothing and prevent rapid wear or contamination. In the process of wearing, all the lining fabrics undergo severe friction.

The main qualities of the lining:

  • with frequent washing, the material should maintain a presentable appearance;
  • it is necessary that the paint on the fabric is high-quality and resistant, especially with friction and other types of exposure;
  • the lining should be easy to process;
  • the material must have hypoallergenic properties;
  • the fabric must have good hygienic characteristics;
  • the material should not be highly electrified.

The lining should be light, strong, wear-resistant, give a little shrinkage during the washing process, and also have a reasonable price and a durable color of the material.

Lining Classification:

  • the material is divided in its composition into cotton, silk, wool, homogeneous and mixed structure;
  • according to the production method, it can be fabric, knitted fabric or fur;
  • the material may be made of yarn or thread;
  • by color is divided into bleached, dyed or variegated.

The lining should match the properties of the upper fabric. It is customary to divide by material density into light, medium and heavy tissues. There is a special GOST for lining fabric with chemical fibers and yarn. Based on such standards, the manufacturer must produce only high-quality materials that meet all the necessary requirements.

There is another classification by composition, lining material is divided into:

  1. natural fabric (flannel or natural silk);
  2. non-natural fabrics (the most famous is viscose);
  3. synthetic (mesh or polyester).

Advantages and disadvantages

Lining fabrics based on natural and chemical fibers are widely sold.

Advantages of natural materials:

  1. do not store static electricity;
  2. vapor permeable;
  3. let air through;
  4. hygroscopic;
  5. they are characterized by high thermal insulation characteristics;
  6. very beautiful and prestigious.

In addition to the positive qualities, natural lining materials have several disadvantages:

  1. crumple very quickly;
  2. color intensity quickly disappears;
  3. can greatly change shape when worn or improperly washed;
  4. quickly absorb moisture and dry for a rather long time.

Advantages of chemical fibers:

  1. these lining materials practically do not wrinkle;
  2. thanks to their technical characteristics, they allow you to make a brighter and more interesting color;
  3. practically do not change their shape with prolonged wear and frequent washing;
  4. some types of linings can be very elastic;
  5. dry quickly and do not lose shape.

In addition to the advantages, these materials have disadvantages:

  1. non-natural lining fabrics have low breathability;
  2. almost do not absorb moisture;
  3. may cause allergies;
  4. capable of storing static electricity;
  5. have low heat-shielding properties.

Types and their characteristics

Currently, there is a huge variety of clothes and accessories that require a lining. Most often, manufacturers use synthetic materials. They have a longer service life and lower cost.

The market for light industry has a huge variety of fabrics.

Atlas is a material with a smooth and even surface.

    Atlas-stretch has a unique radiant surface, which is created using modern weaving technology.

    The main characteristics of the atlas:

    1. it has a dense and even structure;
    2. keeps shape perfectly;
    3. has good wear resistance;
    4. the fabric has a beautiful appearance;
    5. it is safe and hygienic;
    6. The fabric has an antistatic effect.

    This type of lining fabric is used in the manufacture of suits, coats, fur coats, various bags and gloves. Atlas is very finicky. This is a very dense fabric. It actively absorbs dirt, which requires careful and gentle handling of such a thing. And also it has a non-budget value and is suitable for premium items.

    Viscose is made from processed wood pulp. However, do not rank it among chemical tissues.

    The main characteristics of viscose:

    1. the fabric creates a soft glide;
    2. has a democratic value;
    3. does not accumulate static electricity;
    4. very easy to color;
    5. absorbs any moisture well;
    6. possesses hypoallergenic properties.

    Rayon is great as a lining for casual wear. It goes well with the things of a summer wardrobe and, thanks to its synthetic composition, has a long service life. Rayon also allows you to keep warm for a long time, which makes it popular as a lining for outerwear.

    An artificial fabric called cupro is also used for lining.It was created at the beginning of the 20th century. It is based on viscose using copper and ammonia fibers.

    The main advantages of cupro:

    1. the material has a soft structure;
    2. high strength;
    3. the lining of such a fabric is very elastic and resilient;
    4. has high color fastness;
    5. it is very smooth and pleasant to the touch;
    6. It has high breathability and hygroscopicity.

    Such a lining will not wrinkle if it is with elastane. The material is very often used in the manufacture of men's suits and outerwear.

    Cupro is an expensive variety of viscose.

    Polyester is an artificial fabric, similar to wool.

    The main advantages of polyester:

    1. the material has high strength;
    2. has a democratic value;
    3. hesitates very little during operation;
    4. has high resistance to light and heat;
    5. unpretentious in leaving;
    6. possesses high antistaticity.

    From this type of material, it is customary to make a lining for outerwear and leather goods.

    However, the material has little breathability. It absorbs water poorly and is more suitable for winter things.

    Silk and cotton fibers are used to make satin. Due to the technology of weaving, the thread has a dense structure.

    The main advantages of satin:

    1. high density of material;
    2. heat-resistant fabric, which practically does not crease;
    3. possesses good wear-resistant characteristics.

    It is used for fur coats made of natural fur, when sewing skirts, trousers and jackets.

    The grid is a material with a special kind of weaving. It can be small or large. In the form of lining fabric, it is worth choosing a soft mesh, which contains natural fibers.

    The main advantages of the grid:

    1. has high breathability;
    2. keeps warm;
    3. very light;
    4. quite easy to handle and care.

    The mesh is used as a lining for fitness suits and dresses with puffy skirts, for a special celebration. She acts as a lining in sports backpacks.

    Flannel is an insulated and very pleasant fabric.

    The main advantages of flannel:

    1. pleasant to the touch and very soft;
    2. possesses good durability and long service life;

    With prolonged wear, the fabric may wrinkle and roll. This material in the form of a lining is used in children's clothing, envelopes for babies and in the manufacture of trousers and jackets for adults. A wonderful fabric that warms from the cold. The width of the material allows it to be used as a lining in prams.

    Quilted fabric is a material that is sewn according to a specific pattern. It can be on a synthetic winterizer or with a heater from other materials. Most often, due to the line inside, some filler is retained. It can be a windproof, knitted or fireproof thin fabric that glides and does not cling to clothing. It is mainly used for coats or down jackets. And also this type of lining is used for bags.

    More recently, foil lining has appeared on the fabric market. It is non-slip, designed using modern technology and silver ions. The material is made from polyester fibers.

    This lining allows you to keep warm. It is used as a lining in the manufacture of sports jackets and down jackets.

    Colors

    The palette of lining materials is impressive. In the production of clothing, not only standard shades of white, black and blue are used. Very often used red, pink, yellow and light green fabric. Two-way lining fabric is in fashion, which serves as a wonderful decoration for any outerwear. Many coats and suits were sewn using multi-colored lining and materials with a pattern. They give character and style to the image.

    Recently, the lining and the main fabric may not match in color and be contrasting.

    How to choose?

    Lining fabric is a great addition that helps keep the item in excellent condition. It helps to hide all the details of the processing of the material in the form of seams and uneven edges that can crumble. For each item, different fabric variations are used.

    There are several basic rules for choosing a lining.

    • Having a smooth surface allows the fabric to glide. This contributes to the fact that the clothes do not cling to other objects of the toilet, various puffs are not formed on it.
    • Synthetic material has a stronger structure and can withstand more loads than natural.
    • It is best that the lining does not shine, allowing you to hide all the internal seams of the product.
    • It is necessary to look at materials that do not cause allergic reactions, allow air to circulate, and are lightweight so as not to give the impression of being too voluminous.

    A quality product keeps its shape well and does not deform when moisture gets in. Dense material with a smooth surface allows you to hide all the seams. For double-sided materials, you should choose a mesh lining.

    How long it will last and retain its original properties depends on the quality characteristics of the lining fabric.

    In recent years, manufacturers began to offer consumers lining fabrics in very bright colors and from various materials. Such a lining can decorate any thing. Italian lining is very popular. There are also manufacturers of lining fabric in Russia. Both inexpensive material and fabrics of higher quality and, consequently, high cost, go on sale.

    Application

        Lining fabric is common in light industry. It is used when sewing business suits. It serves to maintain the shape and density of skirts and dresses. In summer clothes, the lining is used so that light things do not shine through and do not stick to the body.

        Many types of lining materials are used to design leather goods. From it it is possible to sew curtains or upholstery for furniture. Satin or satin is perfect for curtains.

        How to determine the quality of the lining fabric is described in the next video.
