How to make a vest from a denim jacket?

A denim vest is one of the main fashion trends of several recent fashion seasons. It goes well with light sundresses and dresses, short shorts and bright skirts. However, not every girl has the money to buy this useful and stylish thing, especially since such vests are sometimes unreasonably expensive.

A good way to update your wardrobe without causing a significant blow to your wallet is to make a fashionable vest from an old denim jacket. If you don’t have a suitable jeans, you can put on the thing from someone else’s shoulder, because the vest does not have to be exactly the size.

Turn an old jeans into a fashionable vest

To give a battered denim jacket a new life, you just need to tear off the sleeves from it, process several seams and, if necessary, decorate it with various decorative elements.

For work you may need:

  • cutting scissors;
  • color matching threads;
  • wax crayon or remnant;
  • set of safety pins;
  • sewing spreader;
  • needle or sewing machine;
  • decorations (optional).

The procedure will be as follows:

  • First, apply new contours for the sleeve armhole to the product. There is no need to carefully tear off the sleeves, as the armholes of the vest should be a little deeper than the jeans jacket.
  • Then cut the sleeves according to the marking, leaving about 1 cm for seam processing.

Seams can be processed in several ways:

  • pull a few threads along the edge to get a casual fringe;
  • overcast with an overlock;
  • to braid.

If you chose the latter method, then you will need to purchase a suitable tape (1 meter of tape will be more than enough). The tape is sewn to the cut of the armhole with a 5 mm seam.

Decor Options

You can decorate the resulting vest with a variety of improvised materials, for example, buttons, beads, rhinestones, fringes, ribbons, etc. Consider the two most interesting ways to decorate a denim vest.

Metal rivets

Metal rivets give a simple denim vest a touch of punk or rock styling. The first thing to do is to think over a pattern or pattern made of rivets and schematically designate it on a vest (it is most convenient to use a special washable marker for this purpose). Then we estimate the approximate number of rivets that we need.

Now you need to carefully attach the rivets to the vest so that you get the intended pattern. It is easiest to fix them with a special machine, but usually only professional seamstresses have it. Therefore, we advise you to use a set of tools for installing buttons and staves, which are in a large assortment in ordinary needlework stores. However, you can cheat and get an imitation of staves on a self-adhesive basis.

Lace

Rough jeans and exquisite lace paired up make an incredibly beautiful combination.

Therefore, as another way to decorate a denim vest, we want to offer you lace trim. In sewing stores you can find many options for lace ribbons - from synthetic lace to real lace, woven on bobbins. We advise you to choose cotton, textured lace - it will look more impressive on denim.

How to use lace to decorate a vest is up to you. You can put a thin strip along the edge of the sleeve armhole, you can trim it with pockets or use it as an original patch. The appliqués look very gently in the form of lace patterns cut along the contour.

How to make holes?

Ripped jeans have not gone out of fashion for a very long time, and we can hope that this trend will continue for several more seasons.

If you ever tried to make fashionable holes on jeans, you probably noticed that the holes as a result are completely different from those on store things. The fact is that in order to get stylish fringed holes, you need to follow the special "ragged" technology.

So, to make spectacular holes on a denim vest, we need a sewing spreader and a little patience. We select the place of the future holes, take the spreader and make several vertical sections of different lengths in a row. Then turn the spreader over with a rounded end and start pulling the white transverse threads one at a time. Carefully remove the longitudinal blue threads. We finish work when the hole reaches the desired size.
