In an apartment or in a house, a living room is always the central room where holidays, events, meetings are held. Since the whole family meets in this place, in most cases it is decorated in neutral colors, trying to make everyone comfortable there.

To create a beautiful, stylish yet cozy interior in the hall, all its components should be in harmony, making up a single whole. This applies to walls, floors, furniture and, of course, the ceiling. There are many ways to decorate the ceiling area, and one of the most interesting is the stretch ceiling.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any other design option, the stretch ceiling has both pros and cons.

Let's start with the positive qualities.

  • Long service life. With proper use, it can not lose its characteristics for about two decades.
  • Properly stretched fabric with an interesting design It looks very impressive.
  • Does not suffer from the bay neighbors from above. It is enough to call the master, who gently merges the accumulated liquid, and the canvas takes on its original shape.
  • The material from which the canvases are made, tight, eco-friendly and nonflammable.
  • Stretch ceiling - more than budget option, especially based on its long life.
  • Doesn't “eat” space, as it can be fixed at a distance of 3 cm from the surface. Thanks to this, it can be installed even in apartments with a low ceiling height.

As for the disadvantages, these include a number of factors.

  • The material has an odor that persists for some time after installing the ceiling. Later it erodes.
  • The stretch fabric can easily suffer from mechanical damage - cut, tear. In this case, you can contact a specialist who will put a patch.
  • The need to join the canvas, if they are smaller than the ceiling. Joints are often clearly visible. Therefore, it is better to choose a large canvas.
  • The tightness of the material results in poor air throughput. For some, this can be a significant minus.
  • The canvas can sag over time - by 1-1.5 cm.

Production material

Experts in the field of interior design are unanimous - the best material for a stretch ceiling in an apartment is PVC film with the addition of a plasticizer. As for the classification, there are such types of ceilings as:

  • mirror;
  • glossy;
  • matte;
  • fabric (satin).

    The first is the most beautiful, but also very moody. It is not easy to care for him, because there should not be any stains on the mirror surface. Washing is possible only with soapy water; any abrasive substances cannot be used. But such ceilings visually expand the space, giving it additional height, depth and volume, which is extremely valuable in rooms with a small ceiling height, but spacious in area.

    The same applies to gloss, but such a canvas has its own specifics: if the mirror surface reflects everything clearly, then glossy is blurry, as if in fog. Glossy ceilings look great in living rooms of a small area, giving them airiness. Colors with this design are most often chosen light and neutral - white, milky, beige, coffee with milk, light gray. You can make the ceiling dark, but keep in mind that this can create discomfort for some people.

    Matte Canvases do not visually increase the height of the room, however they create an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility, besides they look very noble.

    A Fabric canvas is the best option for wooden houses. In urban apartments it is undesirable to use it, since it is leaky and not protected from leakage.

    Combined canvases are also found - both in color and in material. There may be coatings of different geometric shapes.

    Color spectrum

    A single-level suspended ceiling is the best solution for a standard-type city apartment. Two levels or more will “eat up” a large number of centimeters of height, which is why they are used either in private houses, or in apartments with high walls, or in the interior of a loft style.

    In the case when light tones are chosen for the walls, a dark ceiling will add a room and volume and depth. Dark shades of the same gamut look especially impressive, for example, light coffee on the walls, and chocolate on the ceiling.

    Classics for single-level stretch ceilings are white and milky colors. Regardless of the style in which the room is decorated, these shades will organically fit into the composition. The only combination that should be avoided when choosing a white ceiling is white walls. Although the Scandinavian style provides and strongly approves of such a combination.

    To decorate a neutrally decorated room, you can choose the option in which the ceiling will become the visual center of the room, attracting all the attention to itself. The possibilities of modern design are so great that you can create any composition - from a star galaxy shimmering in all shades from burgundy to glossy black, to a color gradient, in which tones smoothly flow one into another.

    The more sunny the room, the cooler the shades you can use in its design and vice versa. In the case when the living room simultaneously serves as a bedroom, it is undesirable to make the ceiling bright and unnecessarily decorate it.

    If you decide to design a room in one color scheme, it’s nice to use contrast of textures. Let the walls be matte and the ceiling glossy or embossed. You can zone it by dividing into two or more parts. When zoning, the two-color ceiling looks good, it can be made contrasty and not.

    Which backlight to choose?

    Single-level ceilings need backlighting just like everyone else. There are several lighting options:

    • chandelier;
    • spotlights mounted in the canvas;
    • LED Strip Light.

    Nothing prevents the combination of these types, turning on and off, if necessary, one or another version of the backlight. For example, bright "overhead" lighting is suitable when a family event is held in the living room, and soft spot lighting is ideal for a quiet evening.

    To date, there are a huge number of types and types of lamps, for each style in the interior you can choose an original and at the same time organic version.

    Styles

    For different styles, your types of paintings are suitable. If your living room is decorated in a classic style, then the ceiling needs to be made the same - neutral, elegant, refined. The basis is better to make white or milky color. Acceptable zoning, discreet print, geometric shapes, but the result should be discreet and restrained. The ceiling in the classical style does not draw attention to itself, but is one of the components of the overall composition.

    Art Nouveau is characterized by bright colors - red, ocher, burgundy, and combinations thereof. Accordingly, the ceiling can be made in the appropriate color scheme. And it is advisable to avoid a large number of sharp corners, let there be smooth lines.

    Photo printing on the ceiling canvas decorates the living room in the style of Provence or country. Of course, the print should not “clog” the rest of the design, but be part of the overall composition. Small flowers are ideal for provence, a small geometric print for country. And also matte white ceilings with imitation of coloring are pertinent.

    To decorate the interior in hi-tech or loft style, white linens, as well as brown, gray and even black, if there is a sufficient height of the walls, are suitable. Preferred matte texture, however the mirror ceiling can also look very impressive.

    Pop art and ethnicity are styles where color and redundancy are rampant. The main thing is not to turn the room into a box where the walls will not differ from the ceiling. Zoning, centering, a combination of backlight options - everything is appropriate.

    For baroque style, a single-level ceiling is not an entirely suitable option. The abundance of decor and details requires at least two levels of coverage, and therefore, sufficient height for this. And if your ceiling has a standard height, think carefully before choosing this style for your living room.

    Beautiful options

    The stretch ceiling is very beautiful in the interior, and this can be seen in the examples:

    • loft style involves a matte texture and spot lighting;
    • photo printing and a mirror surface - an original combination;
    • roses are always and everywhere appropriate, including on the ceiling;
    • bright two-color ceiling with two lighting options;
    • the glossy surface is always spectacular;
    • the mirror ceiling is no less spectacular.
