The art of decoupage is popular in many countries. In this technique, you can decorate any interior items - furniture, caskets, watches, vases. And also with its help they make exclusive, designer accessories, bags, hats, decorate some elements of clothing.

Features of the technique

Decoupage - this is the application on the treated surface of the application (decorative motifs) of paper, fabric, leather and other materials that are fixed with several layers of glue. Then the resulting pattern is coated with clear varnish for fixing and durability.

You can decorate products from virtually any material: wood, glass, plastic, leather, metal.

This technique provides an opportunity not only to decorate a thing, but also to give it a “second life”, to look at an object from another perspective. And you can also turn the most ordinary consumer goods into a masterpiece, ennoble the product and add grace.

There are several areas of this skill. The style in which the work is done depends on the particular interior in which it will look most organically.

The watch is present in almost any room. If you decorate them, they will not only show the time, but also are quite capable of occupying a dominant position, becoming a "highlight".

Styles

You can make decoupage watches in several different styles. Consider the most common today.

Provence

Light, light, playful. The basis is pastel colors. It uses natural motifs, images of rural landscapes, vegetables and fruits. You can decorate wood, ceramics, glass.

Shabby chic

This style implies the creation of a thing that has been used for a long time - artificial aging, scuffing, chips, scratches. The mixture of colors - light and dark overlap each other, the effect is erased paint.

You can decorate products from a variety of materials, including metal and plastic.

Vintage

Nobility. Antique objects with a family history, passed down from generation to generation. Dark colors of various shades are characteristic. A special technique for applying craquelure varnishes is applied. Usually in vintage technique they work on wooden surfaces.

The main thing to consider before starting work is which interior the watch is designed for.

For example, for a room decorated in a loft style, the direction of shabby chic, retro is suitable. Old, "old" and battered things.

And vice versa, a vintage mantel clock will decorate the noble living room.

Preparation of tools and materials

That, in what technique is supposed to decorate, depends on the choice of materials and tools that will be required for work. When using an old watch, you just need to disassemble it, clean it from dust and wipe it.

But you can also purchase the necessary details in a specialized store:

  • blank for the body or front wall;
  • dials;
  • figures from wood, plywood, plastic;
  • some models will need a glass cover.

The clockwork can be fixed on any suitable item. Cutting boards, old vinyl records, plates and ceramic dishes and much more are used, it all depends on the imagination.

Select materials suitable for the chosen style and material:

  • sandpaper;
  • degreasing agent (used to treat plastic surfaces);
  • foam sponges;
  • decoupage cards (you can buy in the store of goods for creativity), ordinary napkins or any motives you like;
  • scissors;
  • PVA glue or special decoupage;
  • acrylic primer;

Design Recommendations

After the style is selected, and all the tools are prepared, you can get to work.

The following is a master class that describes how to make a round wall clock for the kitchen with your own hands on a plywood blank with wooden numbers. This is the easiest technology, only a decoupage card or a simple napkin is used.

  • Carefully process the blank and numbers with fine sandpaper.
  • Drill a hole in the center for mounting the mechanism.
  • Then apply a layer of acrylic soil with a sponge (only the front side is primed with the numbers).
  • Wait for it to dry.
  • Coat the workpiece alternately on both sides with light paint.
  • The front side and sides of the numbers should be painted in dark color.
  • Leave to dry.
  • On the front side of the workpiece, apply a second coat of paint of the same tone or slightly lighter. Allow to dry.
  • Take decoupage cards (napkins). For kitchen clocks, images of vegetables, fruits or flowers, a landscape are more suitable. Separate the drawing from the paper layer (how to do this is described in the instructions for the cards).
  • Choose the necessary fragments and try them on the workpiece, choose the most suitable option. Motives are not clipped, but pulled out by hand. Rough edges are easier to mask.
  • Glue the motives, first the main one, and then the rest. To do this, take a little glue on the brush and gently lubricate the whole picture from the center to the edges, while smoothing wrinkles. If PVA glue is used for work, it is diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio.
  • After the glue is completely dry, 2-3 layers of light acrylic varnish should be applied to the front side of the circle and numbers.
  • When one side of the workpiece dries, also process the opposite.
  • Using a ruler or stencil, determine where the numbers will be located and mark the place for each.
  • Using a suitable glue, fix the numbers.
  • Attach clockwork and hands.
  • Hang the finished clock on the wall.

As an original decoration, coffee beans are often used, which are glued in some places on the dial.

In the same way, you can make a square table clock for a bedroom or study.

In this case, the pattern is selected in accordance with the style and color scheme of the interior.

If the clock will be located in the children's room, they are decorated with images of favorite cartoon characters, fairy-tale characters, animals.

The room of a teenager who is interested in marine subjects will be very enlivened and decorated with wooden cabin clocks, with a ship, a compass, a helm, seashells and other attributes associated with the sea.

Antique items decorated in vintage technique organically fit into the interior of the front living room.

You can make a volumetric relief. To do this, apply a stencil and apply texture paste using a palette knife. Then the stencil is carefully removed, excess paste is removed with a cloth.

After drying, you can lightly process with fine sandpaper.

Then cover with two or three layers of acrylic varnish of a suitable shade.

The decoupage of plywood products uses such an interesting technique as imitation boards. To obtain the effect of the texture of wood fibers, several steps are taken.

  • A clean, dried surface is first coated with a light shade primer. They are drying.
  • They paint with light paint, allow to dry.
  • On top of the first layer, a second, darker color is applied. Wait 30 minutes.
  • After that, the upper dry layer is carefully removed with light movements in one direction with a wide brush or brush. Remain stripes that mimic the texture of the tree.
  • After drying, apply several layers of acrylic varnish for fixing.

Original ideas

Decoupage technique includes many different styles, directions, interesting projects.

For example, if there are old vinyl records in the house, you can quickly make original watches from them. Moreover, the hole for mounting the mechanism already exists.

The order of work includes several actions.

  • Degrease the surface.
  • Paint both sides of the plate alternately with paint of the selected color. Wait for it to dry.
  • Choose a suitable image. Prepare it accordingly.
  • Using a brush and decoupage glue, fix the pattern on the plate. Apply glue gently while smoothing wrinkles.
  • After the glue dries, varnish the workpiece.
  • Secure mechanism with arrows

If you choose the appropriate motives, such a watch is suitable for a variety of rooms - kitchen, bedroom, nursery, study, living room.

Trimming boards and gypsum tiles remaining after repair, as well as dishes - trays, plates, can become the basis for new stylish watches.

As elements of decor, you can use any small items that are suitable in style. For example, corks and bottle caps or natural materials - cones, twigs, straws, small fragments of wood bark, corals, shells.
