Today's realities of modern cities are such that initially the streets were not designed for so much traffic. Bicycles come to the rescue of many - they do not take up much space, they allow you to drive along even narrow paths. Because of this, the bicycle is the fastest vehicle in a traffic-jammed city, and its lightness and compactness are a godsend for thieves. This means that you should park bicycles in designated areas, and not anywhere.

Why do we need and what does a bicycle parking lot look like?

Rack-type bike parking is a budget and quick solution for bike parking near a shopping center, movie theater, university or store. It is designed to improve the appearance of cities where bicycles are often attached to railings and poles, road signs. Leaving the bike wherever necessary is also not the best decision for its owner. The costs of bicycle parking are often incurred by both hypermarkets and city road services, as well as activists. Bicycle parking is a contribution to urban infrastructure for residents who for one reason or another do not need a personal car. From this design can be fastened from 3 to hundreds of bicycles.

Common designs

The most inexpensive and popular places for bike parking are devices in the form of a compartment, horizontal bar or longitudinal structure.

Compartment

Compartments for bicycle parking - an all-assembly device welded from the transverse sections of a steel pipe. Between the two nearest pipes, the bike starts with the rear or front wheel.To one of the pipes (or to both, if the length of the chain or cable allows) the wheel together with the frame is fastened with a lock. The width of each of the compartments is either constant or varies. The second option is preferred for bicycles that differ dramatically in landing width.

Narrower bicycles will be needed for simple city bikes, as well as for riders, and wider for mountain and fat bikes. The weight of the structure often exceeds 100 kg, even for two thieves it is difficult to move it by at least a few centimeters, and a thief squad of 10 people will be required to steal. The likelihood of theft is not zero, because the owners of parking lots fix their structures on the site or put a wall or sub-fence structure. The width of the compartment is 20–35 cm, the height is up to 1 m. The distance between the compartments is from 30 to 80 cm.

Pipes from the side where the bike starts, often inclined, with an angle of 45–70 degrees.

It is easily made by hand - you will need steel water pipes with an inner diameter of an inch or more. The dimensions should correspond to the spread in dimensions of modern bicycles.

In the form of a horizontal bar

Tunnel-shaped parking spaces - U-shaped or trapezoidal pipes, separated from each other, bent at an angle of 70–90 degrees at the same height. The best design is the one with the aerial part meter to meter (in length and height). For the convenience of parking, the height of such a pipe reaches a meter - this allows you to conveniently park the bike, preventing it from falling over and rolling away, which would ultimately prevent other cyclists from putting their bikes next to yours. U-shaped parking with a very low pipe is best avoided: it is suitable only for children's bicycles, and it will not be difficult to steal a teenage or an adult by unscrewing the wheel for which it is chained.

The distance between the "horizontal bars" should not be less than 80 cm - near the shopping center "untying" a bicycle with loaded bags and bags will cause significant difficulties. Bike stands are not required. Making such a parking on your own is easier, but no less laborious than a compartment - each U-shaped pipe is inserted into a drilled vertical trench up to a meter deep and poured with concrete, equal in strength and durability to that of its brand that is used for the foundation of a one-story house.

If you do not want to concrete each of the “seats”, you can weld each of the pipes to a common “frame” base, the width of which is equal to the length of the U-shaped pipe.

The simplest substitute for the horizontal bar is a structure made of timber and car tires cut in half, but in the end there will be a bicycle parking, where it will not be possible to tie the bicycle to the frame.

Longitudinal

Despite the advantages - for example, a smaller view for thieves - this installation has a significant drawback: the bike is pulled up to a considerable height and placed horizontally. One cyclist to raise it to a height of a meter and will no longer succeed. This design takes up a lot of space at the installation site. To create a parking lot with 50 seats, at least 5 such structures will be required.

Custom Options

When the architecture of the historical part of the city is so unique that bored "consumer goods" can spoil its appearance, unique street constructions come to the rescue, which are not widely used. In fact, the number of options is not limited by any framework, but several basic ideas spur further flight of imagination and imagination of designers.

  • "Ferris wheel". The Ferris Wheel for bicycles is a usual rotating parking. Each of the cyclists can rotate it so that his parking space is currently available for his bicycle. The simplest design is designed for several bicycles (for example, 6), however, designers can make a "parking wheel" and a hundred bicycles.The only problem is the overall weight of the structure - the more bicycles, the more massive it is, and it will be very difficult for one person to turn it alone. For multi-seat parking - 10 or more bicycles - you may need a chain drive engine such as a drive that turns a real Ferris wheel for people.

Such a design will turn into a real attraction of a region or country. All that a cyclist needs is to hang up and secure the bicycle in an empty seat.

  • Lump construction. The idea of a "tubercle" is simple - it is a ledge of the road in which a neat and even slit is cut. It is easy to make it with a cutter, like what is used to evenly cut asphalt or concrete when digging narrow and deep trenches. The width of the gap is slightly larger than the width of the wheel - only 1.5 ... 4 inches. You start a bicycle with a wheel in this gap, and it holds it by the same wheel, preventing it from rolling and tipping over. The wheel itself falls through almost to the transmission sprockets. The disadvantage is that the bicycle cannot be fixed with anything; for this, a separate locking mechanism would be required. And he, in turn, will complicate the process of performing such a parking, forcing its owner to use concrete, reinforcement and a corner profile.

Because of these features, “tubercles” are used, for example, in the protected area of an enterprise or institution, and not in a public place, say, near a hypermarket.

  • "Fruit". Rack for bicycle parking in the form of fruit or vegetables - a design with mounting places where bicycles are mounted in a "radial" order, converging with the front (or rear) wheels in the center, near the axis of the structure. It does not rotate, in diameter it reaches no more than 2 m. Curved pipes forming a “skeleton” and remotely resembling globe meridians are located at a distance of 25–40 cm from each other. Bikers put their bikes in these makeshift slots - the number of gaps is equal to the number of bikes in such a parking lot.

If it were not for the shape close to the spherical, attracting the attention of tourists, and just the residents of the city, a similar design would have been possible if the U-shaped pipes were arranged in the same "radial" sequence. In the “fruit”, bicycles are fixed both by one of the wheels and behind the frame - the distance between the pipes and the diameter allow you to fully park.

  • "Hairbrush". The design, reminiscent of a hybrid compartment and horizontal bar frame, allows you to correctly fasten even a fat bike to such a “tooth”. The difference between the “comb” and the compartment bike parking is the absence of one pipe connecting the structure (usually from above). The pipes are quite powerful, which will prevent the thief from cutting or cutting her off with any of the tools that make up his arsenal - be it a bolt or pipe cutter, a mount or a circular saw for metal. Painted in a characteristic "wooden" color.
  • The Watchman. This is a parking space made in the shape of a bicycle frame. The first company in our country to offer this form was the Beeline mobile provider. In order to attract customers and new employees (for example, bicycle couriers), the company installed such “bike paths” near its (and retailer) store salons, painting them in its “striped” color.

Indoor bike parking

This is a full compartment, the hinged door of which is equal in width to the public toilet in front. But it takes up twice the size of the territory. With the help of such a compartment, you will hide the bike from unnecessary witnesses, any of which may turn out to be a thief. Closed bike parking - a canopy, the key to the compartment under which the biker takes with him.

What should not be a bike parking?

The design, including home, does not provide for the use as the main elements:

  • plastic or composite pipes;
  • rust-free or galvanized steel without staining, including low quality (insufficient hardness and strength);
  • forged or reinforcing bars;
  • bent sheet iron;
  • profile.

Wood is rarely used here. One hundred percent perfect metal structure made of stainless pipes - It will stand for decades, while remaining clean and sparkling, and there will be the attention of everyone. As a bicycle parking, you can use the fence for the fleet, built in Soviet times from piles and anchor chains.

The bike parking should not be located without a canopy or visor of the building - the bikes of regular employees parked in heavy rain or snow prematurely fail.

As additional measures to protect bicycles from theft:

  • employees of a private security company servicing the facility;
  • video surveillance system installed there or nearby;
  • access control mode - if it is a protected area - by electronic keys of the system working there (with the ability to record data to the server, identify people by faces and fingerprints).

Requirements for bike parking - extremely high security, prevention of offenses related to theft or damage to personal property. The disadvantage is that this solution may be paid.
