When buying bedding sets, any hostess wants to choose a quality product. Which fabric is better, poplin or satin? What is better and cheaper? Our material highlights these and many other issues.

Poplin features

The very first poplin fabric was made from natural silk threads especially for the pope. So its name was formed, because in Italian the word “papal” will be papalino, which in Russian transcription sounds like “poplin”. All types of this fabric are made in one weaving method - linen, when weft threads, which are twice as thick as the warp, cross the main thread through one. Due to this, the poplin has a shallow transverse scar. The density of the poplin canvas is 90–120 threads per 1 cm2. The color of the front and back side is matte.

The following types of poplin are available.

  1. Silk - it is woven from silk and wool threads.
  2. Cotton - they learned to do such a canvas much later. It is based on cotton threads of different thicknesses.
  3. Mixed view. Technological advances made it possible to combine natural and artificial (synthetic) fabrics in tissues.

Poplin is produced, painted in four different ways:

  1. bleached;
  2. multi-colored;
  3. one-colored;
  4. with printed pattern.
  • Natural fabrics are usually bleached. For example, cotton has a brown color, which is very difficult to apply dye. The last stage of bleaching is soaking matter in alkali. This gives additional strength to the tissue and increases its hygroscopicity.
  • Multi-colored method dyeing is that the threads are already intertwined with color. From them, a pattern is formed into a cell or strip.
  • Smooth fabric differs from the above in that the material is painted in one color.
  • A printed pattern is sometimes called printed.. It is obtained when a drawing is applied to fabric using printing machines.

Unique properties of poplin

Poplin is a natural fabric whose properties are as follows.

  1. Hygroscopicity. The fabric absorbs moisture well, holding it.
  2. Good thermal conductivity. Sleeping on such bedding is warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
  3. High breathability. The material allows the skin to breathe.
  4. For the characteristics of bedding, an important factor is what tactile sensations From him. Poplin provides a pleasant feeling.
  5. Strength. Poplin products are resistant to deformation.
  6. Durability. Even with prolonged use and a large number of washes, such linen does not lose its colors and structure.
  7. Hygiene Poplin is a fabric that is easily erased, polluting factors do not linger in it. Her naturalness also matters.
  8. Hypoallergenicity. Due to the widespread spread of allergies, this indicator is important. Products from poplin very rarely cause adverse reactions.

Poplin linen care

Due to the high content of threads per 1 square centimeter, poplin is a wear-resistant material that can withstand 200–250 washings. It is recommended to wash the laundry before the first use at a water temperature of no more than 30 degrees. In the future, washing in water up to 40 degrees is possible. Unscrew the set when washing, this allows you to better clean the joints.

It is not necessary to iron the laundry, as it keeps its shape well and practically does not crease.

Satin Features

Satin was first invented in China, back in the 12th century. Initially, it was made exclusively from silk threads. The ratio of the main thread to the weft is 4: 1 or 6: 1. This means that the main fabric covers 4 or 6 weft threads. Satin weaving includes the following features:

  • in the production of satin, twisted threads are used;
  • the main thread is stronger and thicker than the weft;
  • the weft threads prevail on the obverse, on the wrong side the main ones.

All this creates a unique matter - smooth and silky on the front side, matte - on the wrong side.

The secrets of satin fabrics in Europe were revealed only in the XVII century. Then, the process of its manufacture was able to be modernized; satin was made from cotton fiber. Depending on the type of threads used in the manufacture of the canvas, distinguish:

  • satin made from natural cotton;
  • cotton fabric with the addition of polymer fibers;
  • double satin woven from cotton and viscose;
  • satin satin made from silk and cotton fibers;
  • crepe satin, from the previous type of fabric characterized in that either natural or artificial silk is used.

According to the method of applying the picture, the satin fabric has several types.

  • Simple satin, where the density of weaving is 90-130 threads per square centimeter. It is stained by pigment printing.
  • A printed one contains from 130 to 170 threads per 1 cm2, the color of the fabric is created by colored weaving fibers.
  • Coupon satin, the density of which is about the same as that of printed. Differences in fabrics creates a way of dyeing. The coupon sateen uses the hot printing method. This allows you to create a drawing individually for each product.
  • The satin-jacquard weave for 1 square. cm reaches a value of up to 200 threads. It belongs to expensive and elite fabrics, the face and the back of which are equally beautiful, which is achieved by using a loom in the manufacture of this material.
  • Mako-satin is also among the elite and expensive materials. Its density reaches 250 per square. see. Composition - the thinnest fiber of Egyptian cotton. Due to this, the fabric is soft and light.

Satin Properties

  1. Hygroscopicity. Matter absorbs moisture and sweat.
  2. Low thermal conductivity. A constant temperature is maintained, which allows you not to freeze in winter.
  3. Strength and durability. Bedding made from satin fabrics is resistant to deformation and constant washing.
  4. Holds shape well and does not need ironing, This is especially pronounced in fabrics with the addition of artificial fibers.
  5. Hypoallergenicity. This property is possessed by matter only from natural materials. If artificially synthesized fibers were added to the fabric, this can cause undesirable reactions.

Satin bedding.

Before the first use, it is recommended to wash the products in lukewarm water. Then the temperature during washing can be increased to a temperature of 60 degrees. It is best if the laundry is pre-turned inside out. It is necessary to iron such linen at a temperature not exceeding 90 degrees.

Jacquard fabrics are more demanding in care. They must be washed in a delicate mode without spinning and in water not exceeding the temperature of the human body. Dry in fresh air, but without direct exposure to sunlight. Iron at a temperature of 60 degrees.

Polysatin - what kind of tissue?

The peculiarity of the fabric is that the weft thread prevails on the front side. This gives the material special strength as well as a silky surface. The name polysatin combines the concepts of polyester fibers and satin weave. Distinguish between industrial, consisting of 100% polyester, and household (cotton and synthetic fibers in different ratios).

The main properties of household polysatin:

  • high wear resistance;
  • durability;
  • resistance to deformation and shrinkage;
  • relatively low price;
  • unpretentious in leaving;
  • a large number of color schemes;
  • does not pass moisture and air.

The main difference from satin fabrics is the lack of hygroscopicity and breathability. This leads to increased sweating. This fabric is not suitable for sewing clothes and can cause allergies.

With prolonged use of bedding, spools can form from this material. The fabric can build up static electricity.

What common?

We found out the features of each fabric - both poplin and satin. Let us now consider what is common between them.

  1. The first thing that can be called - both of these materials are natural fabrics using cotton, so they will retain heat well, absorb moisture, let air through.
  2. Easy to care. Easy to wash and do not require ironing.
  3. Durability and wear resistance. Poplin bedding withstands 200–240 washings, satin - up to 300, while maintaining the shape and color of the fabrics. Most importantly, no spools are formed.
  4. A wide selection of colors. At the modern level of printing, it is possible to color the material in any shade and even make 3 D printing.
  5. Neither poplin nor sateen build up static electricity.
  6. These fabrics are easy to cut and sew.

What is the difference?

Of course, we found many similarities between satin and poplin, but there is a difference between them.

  1. Weaving threads. Features of the weaving of the main threads and weft create characteristic features. Poplin is a lighter fabric, matte in a small scar. Satin, on the contrary, is smooth with a silky sheen.
  2. The density of materials. Satin fabric is denser than poplin. The number of threads per square centimeter in poplin is 90–120, which is much less than satin — from 130 for simple and up to 250 for jacquard.
  3. Due to the high density of weaving, satin fabric is considered stronger and more durable than poplin.
  4. The issue of price remains important. Satin, as a representative of satin (silk) weaving, undoubtedly, costs much more than the highest quality poplin linen.

Which is better to choose?

The choice of bed linen is very important in the life of every person, because it is known that we spend a third of our lives in a dream. The quality of linen will determine how our sleep and health will be. In connection with the developed weaving industry, the number of offers of bedding is simply huge. Do not rush to make purchases, carefully study the available offers.

If you want soft, silky, durable and expensive looking bedding, then the choice is obvious - satin.

If you, on the contrary, prefer opaque, tender, in the middle price category, then the choice, of course, should fall for poplin.

Customer reviews

Customer reviews on poplin underwear are mostly positive. Mistresses note that in the middle price category, sets of this fabric meet the best expectations. They are well washed, do not deform, retain their color, are very pleasant to the body and skin.

Satin linen is among the elite. Buyers like the smoothness and silkiness of linen, its lightness, ease of care. Kits look elegant and expensive. However, some consumers are uncomfortable sleeping on slippery underwear. This is the only negative of the whole variety of pluses.
