Previously, canvas was a coarse linen canvas, which was later made from cotton. At present, this material is significantly different from the old model. Now it is a dense blended fabric with impregnation, and its feature is a clearly marked interweaving of threads.
Composition and characteristics
Previously, hemp cloth was made to create sails; to increase the strength, the product was impregnated with wax. By the way, textiles were made from hemp for many nations, for example, it was almost impossible for the Slavs without hemp to imagine farming. The difference between the material was a clear interweaving of threads. The fabric was pretty rough. Hempweed in the Mediterranean was called cannabis, hence the name - canvas.
It can rightly be considered that the forerunner of the material now known was canvas. Outwardly, modern canvas is similar to an old canvas, bearing the same name, but the structure and composition are significantly different. A significant difference is the manufacturing technology. Currently, in Russia, the most famous manufacturers of canvas are the factories of Ivanovo, Ivanovo Region, Altai Territory.
The modern version has a two-layer structure. Surface consists of polyester (85%) and nylon (15%). As part of the base, polyester is combined with cotton or linen in a ratio of 65%: 35%, respectively. Special impregnation serves as an effective protection of the surface from water and dirt, and also greatly facilitates the care of the product. Special production methods give the material enormous strength and wear resistance.In appearance, like the old sample, the fabric resembles a canvas. It is also often called "canvas".
Products made of canvas have indicators of wear resistance that are 10 times higher than GOST: in its original condition, the canvas can remain for several decades. If we consider the tactile properties of the material, it is worth noting its extraordinary softness, it is quite nice to touch the matter. This is a comfortable product that also has high breathability. The positive qualities also include the ability to maintain shape, the ability to not stretch and not shrink, water-repellent properties and resistance to pollution, lack of tendency to form pellets.
The canvas is painted by thermal printing, and therefore usually this product has a bright saturated color. Previously, natural canvas had an ash color, but thanks to modern technologies, it is possible to create very bright, vivid images on the canvas. Thanks to the special structure, whole paintings and prints can be depicted on the fabric, and even a complex pattern creates the impression of handmade work. The image of any texture is very pronounced on a material such as canvas.
By the way, materials from a natural gray shade also remain very popular. They can be used to design images, for example, in an ecological or Mediterranean style.
Varieties
Canvas can be classified according to density indicators. This is determined by the number of threads in one square centimeter. There are two options:
- 180–240 g / sq. cm - this is a delicate matter that is usually used for making clothes;
- from 320 g / sq. cm - a denser fabric that is used for sewing bags and shoes.

How to care?
Canvas care is very simple. The main rule that you should remember when washing is that Teflon impregnation should not be damaged. If this layer is destroyed, the material will lose its protective properties and will quickly become worthless.
A stain that appears on the surface is easily and quickly removed with a normal wet sponge or soapy solution. Periodically, the product must be shaken and vacuum cleaned with a soft brush.
It is recommended to wash a thing, if necessary, in a washing machine in a gentle mode using warm water. Canvas dries very quickly, creases and traces after washing do not remain on it.
The need for ironing usually does not arise, but if you cannot do without it, it is recommended to use a steam stream or a cold iron.
