Gothic style of clothing: medieval motives in a new way

To understand the modern fashion trend, you need to go back several centuries and get acquainted with stylish “ancestors”.

The general concept of "Gothic" appeared in the Renaissance and meant the trend in the art of European countries at the end of the XI - XIII centuries. The Gothic trend, which replaced the Romanesque style, touched architecture, sculpture and, of course, fashion, which was distinguished by:

  • grim majesty;
  • bewitching coldness;
  • beautiful austerity.

And it literally permeated everything around. People of art and art historians of the Renaissance called this period and all that belonged to it “barbaric”.

Like many things related to art and fashion, the Gothic style originated in France, and reached its peak in the historical region of this country - Burgundy.

The “barbaric” fashion of the Middle Ages had several options - each class had its own trends and preferences. Their attraction to elongated proportions and silhouettes united them. In the trend were shoes with long noses (sometimes up to half a meter), pointed hats, a thin waist tightly laced with lacing, teeth along the edges of clothes and long trains. The higher the position of the lady, the longer the train. The fashion trend was drapery in the abdomen.

The upper dresses were represented by semicircular or round cloaks, fastened on the chest with a massive buckle.

Bright colors and all kinds of ornaments prevailed in the color palette.

After some time, Gothic style was replaced by other styles. It seemed that she had outlived her life and went down in history. But after several centuries - at the turn of the 18th – 19th centuries, it revived briefly, absorbing new rules and trends.

The next round of popularity of the “well-forgotten old” came in recent history.

Features of modern Gothic

Modern gothic clothing, with the help of which the Goths express themselves (fans of the subculture of the same name), are significantly different from what was in fashion almost a dozen centuries ago. It was born, or rather, revived in a modernized form, today's Gothic style in the 70s of the last century. In addition to the features of medieval fashion, elements of punk trend and modern trends interwoven into it.

The main distinguishing features of the "barbaric" trend in modern clothing are:

  • The attraction to black and its cool combination with white or red. Minimal use of saturated shades of purple, burgundy, green and blue is also allowed.
  • The presence of clear silhouettes and straight lines.
  • Extravagance.
  • Narrow top and free bottom, designed to make the figure angular and hide feminine forms.
  • The use of white (light) jewelry of a certain subject. Favorite metal is ready - silver, which symbolizes the moon and emphasizes the deathly pallor of its owners.
  • Sharp corners that can appear in collars, cuffs, hem or even prints on clothing details.
  • The use of textured fabrics and materials with an interesting texture.

He inherited gloom and severity from his medieval ancestor.

Diversity

Currently, the Gothic style is divided into several areas, which, of course, do not depend on the social status of its fans. Rather, it is a matter of taste and preference.

  1. Antique (romantic), using fashion trends of the XVIII century and characterized by the presence of lace, gloves to the elbows, maxi dresses, corsets and veils.
  2. Vampire, which is a kind of imitation of "cinema" vampires. Girls who adhere to this direction, diligently emphasize their sexuality, use bright red details in their outfits or makeup (lipstick, nail polish).
  3. Metallized (rock). It resonates with the “metal” in music and uses leather things, complemented by all kinds of chains, collars, spikes. The use of latex clothing is also allowed here.
  4. Cyber direction. Cleverly combines elements of Gothic with industrial. When creating images, preference is given to artificial fabrics, acid shades, shoes on a high platform.
  5. Lolita (J-Goth). Destination is from Japan. Its main attributes are Gothic knee-length dresses, richly decorated with frills and crinoline. Umbrellas, hats, shoes with rounded toes on a high platform are used as accessories.
  6. Corporate A kind of "adaptation" of the subculture and its fashion to the requirements of the dress code. It is characterized by minimal use of accessories and a practical lack of makeup.

In addition to these options, in modern Gothic can be identified;

  • Victorian and Renaissance Goths embodying images of the past;
  • androgynous, trying to “disguise” their true gender for clothes and cosmetics;
  • glitter- and fair-goth, which include exclusively girls who repaint their hair in uncharacteristic bright colors, weave dreadlocks and pigtails.
  • Western-ready, reminiscent of movies about cowboys.

Representatives of the latter group are the smallest and are less common than others.

Modern set of gothic things.

As already noted, in the wardrobe is ready to dominate things in black. But here the assortment of image elements is quite wide.

Silk, velvet, vinyl, mesh leather, denim, complemented by organza, brocade, taffeta, lurex are used for outfits.

Women's wardrobe is made up of:

  • leather pants, tight-fitting silhouette;
  • T-shirts, turtlenecks, blouses of a dark color;
  • skirts and raincoats of medium and maximum length;
  • leather corsets that are worn on top of dresses or shirts;
  • vintage or ultra-modern dresses of complex styles;
  • harnesses - like corsets, they are worn over clothes;

All sorts of lace, frill, lacing, coarse boots on a high platform or heel, unusual umbrellas, long gloves, hats with veils, large massive jewelry made of white metal complement the image (silver is mainly used, but “exceptions” of white gold or platinum are allowed).

Favorite accessories are ready:

  • jewelry decorated with spikes, chains, handcuffs;
  • latex or leather bracelets and collars;
  • images of skulls, spiders, cats, dragons;
  • rings, earrings and pendants with images of Egyptian crosses.

Instead of bags, girls will need large backpacks or elegant valise bags.

An integral and important part of the image is the hairstyle. U ready it, as a rule, straight raven-colored hair (less often it is red or ashen). The romantic direction allows curls and lush hairstyles.

Peculiar to adherents of the Gothic style and make-up. The "aristocratic" pallor of the face is very popular, therefore, a significant layer of makeup is applied to it. The most expressive detail is the eyes, summed up with a black eyeliner or pencil. The color of the manicure is also black.

Who is it for?

Despite its extravagance, modern Gothic is quite universal. The original image is suitable:

  • for an unconventional wedding;
  • girls seeking expression;
  • to organize an unusual photo shoot;
  • for a party;
  • for lovers of black, a little bored of the monotony;
  • those who want fundamental changes in appearance.

Create a fashionable bow.

For those who want to dress, according to the canons of the subculture, I advise designers to start with black trousers, which can be jeans or leather.

If the figure allows (slender forms), skinny should be preferred. Otherwise, it can be quite loose-fitting trousers.

The next acquisition is a corset, which is perfect for both trousers and a fluffy skirt with lace trim.

Under the corset, a "pirate" shirt with bare shoulders is recommended.

The romantic image is ready

For fans of rock, in turn, T-shirts with various symbols corresponding to the direction are suitable; pants; leather shoes with solid solid soles or high heels in black or red; leather bracelets and latex collar.

To not only look like a goth, but also to become it, you need a special worldview and a suitable environment.
