Despite the inconsistency of the era, it was she who brought into fashion many things that are now considered cult ones - jeans, mini-skirts, dresses in linen style and bomber jackets. And modern adolescents, who were born much later, increasingly prefer clothing from the 90s.
Let's remember what was the fashion era of the end of the twentieth millennium.
Features of the era
The way to dress in the 90s is better not called a style, but a new approach to fashion and the choice of clothes. The very principle of creating clothes by designers and creating the image of ordinary people began to change.
The main principle of the era is "to be yourself." Great attention was paid to individuality, a reflection of the inner world of a person and his own style. It was at this time that the profession of stylist and image maker appeared, and glossy magazines began to give advice on how to emphasize their individuality.
Specific traits
In the 90s, denim clothes became especially popular - absolutely everything went in it. These are not only jeans, but also skirts, shorts, sundresses for girls and overalls for representatives of both sexes.
It was then that a denim suit was created - trousers and a jacket or jacket, which they always wore together. Moreover, designers created denim bags, hats and even denim shoes. No wonder this era is sometimes called the "jeans".
Unisex clothes also became popular for the first time - they wore T-shirts, dimensionless sweaters, sneakers or other comfortable shoes with jeans.
At the same time, deliberate theatricality and an abundance of bright colors, especially in female images, were in fashion.
More attention was paid not so much to clothes as to the human body.It had to be either pale or very tanned, slender, sometimes even too much, the figure became an integral part of a fashionable look.
A mandatory visit was not only to the gym, but also to the beauty parlor. Huge popularity began to enjoy cosmetic surgery. The cult of supermodels appeared - everyone sought to align themselves with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss.
Since clothes could hardly surprise anyone, fashionistas began to modify their body - to do piercings, tattoos, the style of which is a topic for another discussion.
The style of the 90s in Russia
Fashion at the end of the twentieth century in the world and in the territory of post-Soviet states, and in Russia in particular, was somewhat different. What we take for 90s fashion was popular in America and Europe in the mid 80s.
This is due to the fact that the iron curtain fell, and streams of bright outfits poured over us, which previously could only be obtained from speculators. It was not so important for residents of the former Union to follow world fashion trends, how much to wear “foreign” clothes.
This period was remembered by jeans-dummies, leather and jeans mini-skirts, blouses and sweaters with wide shoulders, colored leggings, fashion for tracksuits, colorful knitted sweaters, and electronic watches.
Style directions of the era
Grunge
The founder of the style consider Kurt Cobain and his group Nirvana. They revolutionized not only the world of music, but also the world of fashion. Their fans, following Kurt, started wearing baggy sweaters, voluminous men's trousers (which we call boyfriend jeans today), stretched cardigans, plaid shirts, jackets, leather jackets, worn sneakers and heavy boots.
Thus, they declared their indifference to the fashion industry. The main features of grunge are untidiness, layering, oversize clothing, cage and denim.
Runway fashion adopted the traditions of grunge; it could be found at Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld.
Minimalism
This style was born in the 60s, but reached the greatest development at the end of the twentieth century. Many designers have relied on conservatism, the simplicity of shapes and colors. Much attention was paid to strict cut and simple silhouettes.
The most prominent representatives of the style are Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, who later elevated the unisex style to a cult, resulting in minimalism. Over time, unisex transformed into androgyny, which is popular today.
If grunge came to the catwalks from the streets, then with minimalism everything was the other way around. Thanks to the efforts of designers, laconic jeans, white tops and T-shirts, flat shoes, jackets and a minimum number of accessories became popular in everyday wear.
In the movie, the brightest representatives of minimalism were Rachel and Monica from Friends, Dana Scully from The X-Files and the heroine Sharon Stone from Basic Instinct.
Rave and neon
In music, grunge has replaced a new direction - rave. This is electronic music, the integral part of which were non-stop parties and drugs. Inevitably, this influenced fashion trends in clothing. Acid colors, vinyl and plastic, supermini, T-shirts and tops with psychedelic patterns, shoes on a huge platform, bright hair and makeup have become popular.
On the catwalks, this direction was difficult to find, but on the streets the style was more than active. Blue, green, orange hair, a 15-cm platform, vinyl clothes - all this was popular even in Russia.
Sport chic
In the mid-90s, another style was born, which made leggings a cult garment. They were worn with sneakers, shiny T-shirts, worn with dresses and miniskirts.
A crop top (preferably showing a navel piercing) worn with jeans or miniskirts was also popular.
Sport chic came to both the catwalks and the cinema. He could be found in most youth series of the time.
Eco style
At the end of the twentieth century, ecology around the world deteriorated sharply, which could not but affect the fashion industry. Designers began to look for ways not to create, but to process materials that were in use.
For example, fashion designer Martin Margiela was changing old clothes that were out of fashion. Over time, this idea of redrawing and altering old clothes gained widespread acceptance, and at the moment it has reached its peak. Eco-style, not only in clothes, but also in the interior, has been popular for many years.
This includes the rejection of synthetic fabrics in favor of linen, cotton and hemp, genuine leather shoes.
At the same time, the ban on natural fur, which designers began to replace with synthetic, began to be actively promoted by the “green” ones. In the 90s, Franco Moskino became the first, and today many fashion brands no longer use it in their collections.
Iconic clothing

To understand how business women dressed at that time, it is worth recalling Agent Scully again. These were elongated jackets with huge shoulders, trousers or short skirts, silk shirts and massive coats.

Their jewelry was favored by chokers, large ring earrings and thin chains.
90s style today
Despite the fact that this period has long been considered one of the most tasteless, today it is incredibly popular. Since 2012, elements of that era began to appear in the fashion collections of designers.
At first it was neon colors, in 2013 there was a real boom on grunge. Some copied the same Kurt, while others added a grunge eclecticism. Lace and knit sweaters, combined with rude boots, did not go out of fashion for several seasons.
Some designers could find elements of rave, minimalism, sport-chic. The last two directions have not recently gone out of fashion, they have moved into the category of universal ones.
At the moment, elements of the style of the 90s at the peak of popularity. Wide heels, square toe socks, cropped tops, high-waisted jeans, mini-skirts with plain white t-shirts.
Each designer has this era represented differently. Someone relies on minimalism, which is valued for rigor and simplicity, while others use the brilliance and variegation of that period in their collections.
