Such a piece of furniture, like a bedspread, initially performed a more practical function - it served for heat. By the eighteenth century in France, this detail became more and more elegant and attractive, until it also acquired a decorative function. What is the significance of bed covers for today, what materials are they made of?
Features and purpose
The bedspread in the bedroom is a type of home textile that is laid on top of a made-up bed. The product allows you to protect it from dust and pollution, prying eyes. Properly selected bedspread, of course, decorates the bedroom and can even become its accent. It gives the room completeness, becomes part of the style. Finally, you can also take cover during the afternoon siesta or if it gets cold under the covers.
Based on the functions described above, we can conclude that the product should be suitable in size, combined with the style of the bedroom, be attractive in appearance and pleasant to use, withstand many washes, while maintaining quality and appearance.
Types and materials
All existing products can be divided into 2 groups:
- those that are sewn from natural materials (quilted wool);
- products from artificial analogues (faux fur bedspread).
The first are environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic, however, their service life is shorter, after washing, natural fabrics shrink. Artificial tissue analogs do not have these shortcomings, but can accumulate static electricity, sometimes they are not so pleasant to the touch.However, we immediately make a reservation that such a division is arbitrary. Most products are combined bedspreads. That is, natural and vice versa are added to artificial threads. This allows you to improve the operational properties of the bedspreads, as well as significantly reduce the cost of the product.
The most common varieties of bedspreads are:
- cotton fabrics, as well as their mixture with artificial fabrics, resulting in a dense weaving fabric with a smooth surface (poplin, viscose, calico, percale);
- cotton, wool and mixed materials with a rough surface (jacquard, tapestry, pique);
- natural or synthetic (as well as mixed versions) fabrics with a fleecy surface (velor, faux fur with short and long nap, plush, velvet);
- synthetic fabrics made of polyester fibers (velsoft, fleece, microfiber);
- printed silk and artificial fabrics (satin, brocade, polyester).
Cotton and silk products are distinguished by external attractiveness, practicality, environmental friendliness. Fleecy and velvet bedspreads look no less attractive, but attract dust and are not recommended for use by allergy sufferers. For their cleaning, as a rule, you have to use dry cleaning services.
And if you often lie on such bedspreads, then over time “bald spots” form on them, which significantly reduces the aesthetic value of the product.
Colors
In Soviet society, one of the most important criteria for choosing a bedspread was its maximum compliance with curtains and curtains. Whenever possible curtains and bedspreads were sewn from the same fabrics, however, today designers recognize this with a bad manners.
You can choose a product that, in texture, shade or pattern, will be combined with the rest of the textiles in the bedroom or harmoniously look with furniture and flooring. However, contrasting combinations are no less interesting. It is important to mix cold shades with cold, and warm with warm. If this coloristic rule is not respected, the room does not look in one style, but evokes associations with thoughtless piling up of things.
When choosing a product with a pattern, remember that the size of the latter should match the dimensions of the room. Large drawings in a small bedroom will overload her. Excessive "variegation", the saturation of the ornament in this case will also be ridiculous, visually overload and reduce the bedroom. It is important to combine the print on the bedspread with other available “geometry” in the room. For example, if there are squares and rectangles on the walls (for example, as a picture on wallpaper or picture frames), then the cover should repeat this print or not have it at all.
White and pastel shades can be considered widespread and universal, the blue veil and its variations (for example, turquoise, blue), pastel and coffee, brown shades, gray colors.
Depending on the patterns, bedspreads can take several forms:
- rectangular - It is a rectangle, for which the product is also called a cover-sheet;
- bilateral - the feature of the product is that both of its sides are front, if necessary, you can quickly change the style of the bedroom by simply turning the cover over;
- covers - bedding and mattress are completely closed, while the legs of the bed remain open;
- with supervision - It is a wide frill that frames the product around the perimeter, while the gap can be strict (it has oncoming folds in the corners), draped (drapery around the perimeter), pleated (instead of drapery - a wide pleat).
Dimensions
To determine the dimensions of the bedspreads, you need to know the dimensions of the bed. Before buying, you should measure the length, width and height. The obtained parameters are the minimum size of the bedspread.. Ideally, this figure should be added another 10-15 cm on each side. If the bed has a headboard, then from its side you can not add the indicated figures to the bedspread.
If you need a bedspread that descends nicely to the floor, then add the height of the bed in the filled-in form to the basic parameters 1 time in width and 2 times in height. Even up to 15 cm in length should be added if you want the product to lie on the floor. Models are sewn in several standard sizes. On a 2-sleeping bed - it covers 180x200 cm or 160x200 cm, on the 1.5th bedroom - 140x200 cm. There are still very large products - 240x260 cm, single - 100x200 cm or 90x200 cm, children's - 90x100 cm or 90x160 cm.
Style solutions
In classic rooms, the repeatability of bedspreads and other textiles in the room is quite common. This primarily relates to curtains in the bedroom. Usually, items made of solid tapestry or velor in classic shades are selected. If a print is used, then these are noble ornaments. A good analogy looks in rustic interiors. True, it is better to opt for cotton products. A floral or animalistic print, scenes of rural life are welcome.
A gentle blanket with frills emphasizes the romance of the room. Pay attention to the length of the product. If the bedspread reached the floor, it would look old-fashioned and pretentious. In this case, the length of the bedspread emphasizes the dynamism, lightness and modernity of the hostess of the bedroom. For bedrooms in a modern style, as well as in the spirit of minimalism, you can consider cover option. It is sewn strictly according to the size of the mattress, it can take the form of a cocoon, which covers the bed.
As for the product design, both monophonic and printed models will fit equally harmoniously into such an interior.
However, the cover is an excellent solution not only for designs in the style of minimalism, but also for carved wood beds, original designer models. In a word, that furniture, which in itself is the accent of the room. It will be successful to use the product in the form of a cover for four-poster beds, soft protruding details. For classic or aristocratic bedrooms, massive beds with a wide mattress, the product with a glance may be the best option. There is a stereotype that such models are only splendor and airiness, although there are more dense smooth models.
Shabby, country, provence or vintage bedrooms require more affordable options from deliberately natural fabrics.. A great solution could be knitted pattern, resembling, rather, a large plaid. Snow-white bedspreads with patterns, embroidery or fringe will also become a harmonious accessory in such rooms. Ruffles and folds in this case emphasize the luxury of the room and add notes of solemnity.
It must be remembered that these details visually increase the berth, so a blanket with frills can be unsuitable for bedrooms of medium and small sizes.
Ruffles and shuttlecocks will also perfectly cope with the task of making the room more tender, light, romantic. Usually this method is resorted to if the standard bedroom needs to be turned into a girl's. It is desirable to supplement the bedspread with several pillows of different sizes. Universal, but at the same time considered stylish the bedspread is white. It brings to the bedroom the nobility of the bedrooms of aristocrats, freshness, visually expands the space. And so that white does not look boring, you can choose a product with pinches, an imitation of a carriage tie, etc.
Of course, you have to carefully monitor the purity and whiteness - leaving the bedspreads in yellowness or a gray shade will instantly make the whole bedroom sloppy and old-fashioned. To create the most comfortable and cozy environment will help the model using the patchwork technique (sewing by patches). It is especially true in eclectic, vintage, rustic rooms. Such a product will be the "highlight" of the bedroom, but the latter should not be overloaded.
How to choose?
In general, when choosing a product for a bed, one should be guided by the following criteria: size, quality and the appearance of your personal wishes. Dimensions of the product should correspond to the size of the mattress or bed. Do not buy too short a modelif this is not a design solution for the bedroom interior. Too long will drag on the floor and look messy. Usually short models are tucked under the mattress to demonstrate unusual legs of the bed.
It is also important to consider the age, lifestyle and nature of the owner of the room. So, in the bedroom of an adult woman, a pale pink bedspread with bows and ruffles may be inappropriate. In a beige bedroom, the product can be selected both bright and pastel. The features of the location of the room relative to the cardinal points are also taken into account. If the bedroom "looks" to the north, it is recommended to bring warmth and add coziness with the help of textiles with pleasant textures and warm colors. For southern rooms, you can choose cooler colors.
Before buying, you should decide whether your bedspread will be washed in a washing machine or if you have to go to dry cleaning to clean it. For families with small children or pets, it is better to choose bedspreads that are not afraid of frequent washes. It is good if the products are not in pastel shades, with decor on the surface (beads, brushes). The optimal material is viscose, satin, cotton, as well as combinations thereof. But tapestry and silk are not the best solution for such families.
An important aspect is the quality of the bedspreads. It should not accumulate static electricity or have an unpleasant "artificial" smell. A good thing will be noble to the touch, will retain its color and shape, size after washing. Kits that enjoy well-deserved confidence of customers are Turkish, Italian (produce sets with a back for the headboard), and domestic products. Turkey produces luxury sets, their new bedding usually dictate fashion trends for other manufacturers of neighboring countries.
Care and storage
Wash and care in general should be appropriate for the type of fabric, you must follow the care recommendations on the product label. It is better not to soak colored and printed products, and it is better to wash color options at the first washing by hand, separately from other things. The tapestry can be machine washed (manually) or dry cleaned. The folds can be smoothed out with a hot steam iron. The front side is recommended to steam through cheesecloth.
Satin bedspreads can be washed in hot, up to 95 C, water. However, if it is a colored product, then the water temperature should not exceed 60 C. Drying is better without resorting to machine drying. It is allowed to use steam iron to get rid of creases and creases. Fur covers can be washed in non-hot, not higher than 30 C, water. Aggressive formulations and washing conditions, mechanical drying, and high spin should be avoided. Similarly, they look after woolen products. To get rid of folds, such coverlets are sometimes enough to hang on a rope.
When using an iron, the bedspread must be moistened.
Examples in the interior
Recall that when choosing a bedspread, one of the criteria should be its conformity to the interior asleep. In this example, we see that the main colors are warm pastel shades. At the same time, the bed and other furniture are dark, so the basis of the bedspread will be a lighter coffee shade. To "make friends" with other colors allow decorative inserts of a brown shade (repeat the color of the bed) and pillows to match them.
If you take a closer look, it will become obvious that each pair of pillows repeats the color of one of the elements of the bedroom - bedspreads, headboards, curtains and armchairs. Thanks to this, a special harmony is achieved, the mood of home comfort, warmth is created.
The next example is an illustration of how a bright unusual coverlet became the accent of a fairly calm (and for some, perhaps, boring) room and transformed it.
The main condition for the attractiveness of such interiors is one main emphasis and its small “support” within this room. Please note that the print of the bedspreads is repeated in a small picture hanging on the bed. Lighting also helps to create volume and properly direct attention.
The next example is a successful combination of wallpaper prints on the walls and bedspreads. However, such success and visual harmony are due to the right approach. The color of the wallpaper pattern becomes the basis of the shade of the bedspread, which also has an unobtrusive print. Only with this approach you can avoid the clumsy interior.
Since we are talking about combining prints, let us turn to another example. The headboard upholstery is continued in the bedspread. Pillows help to avoid the ridiculous effect when everything merges together, they are made of other materials, and therefore they seem to dilute the space.
In this case, it was possible to swap items - choose a plain fabric for the head and bedspreads and decorate the sleeping place with printed pillows.
Another interesting option is how, with the help of the bedspreads, they gave the finished look, they ensured the maximum compliance with the chosen style. Before us is an interesting room, decorated in ethnic style. It is quite calm in nature - natural materials, pastel shades. But it is a bright bedspread in ethnic style that gives the room charm, adds “zest”. Without it, the bedroom would have looked faded.
