Beagle breed belongs to hunting dogs. It is believed that she came from England, since it was there that her selection was first started. But even in ancient Greece, long before that, there were hounds that resembled beagles. At the moment, these animals are used as guards, but they can be excellent friends. Therefore, they are increasingly being purchased as pets.

What factors influence development?

Owners of this breed should know that these animals are very difficult to train. Beagles are stubborn, they need a master with a firm hand and character. The main time for the development of these dogs is from birth to six months. In the same period, you need to conduct intensive training. If you miss a moment, you won’t be able to catch up in the future, the animal will be uncontrollable and will bring a lot of trouble. The following factors influence the development of a beagle:

  • proper mother maintenance during intrauterine development of puppies;
  • adequate care for newborn babies;
  • fresh air access;
  • good affectionate attitude;
  • suitable temperature in the room in which the dogs are kept;
  • good nutrition.

You can’t feed these animals with sweet, fat, smoked. This will affect the general condition of the dogs as a whole.

As an encouragement, you can treat them to apple and carrots. It is also necessary to conduct anthelmintization in a timely manner and make sure that all the necessary minerals and vitamins are enough in the diet. The disadvantage will affect the entire body of the dog, including tooth enamel. An indicator of good development will be the presence of forty-two teeth in a seven-month-old puppy.

So that the cubs do not lag behind in height and weight, in the first month the babies are slightly underweight to the mother’s back, more full nipples. And also, if there are more than six newborns in the litter, care should be taken about artificial feeding. The infant formula in this case will not work, since sugar is present in its composition, you need to choose food in accordance with the recommendations of the veterinarian.

After being absent, they are also worth taking the advice of a specialist. Beagles can be fed with special food, or with natural products. For any choice, a bowl of clean water should be placed next to the bowl of food in order to avoid problems with digestion and stool, which greatly affect the height and weight of the dog.

A set of extra pounds is harmful for puppies, this is an extra load on their still weak skeletal system.

The owner needs to monitor the composition of the feed, the frequency of feedings and regularly weigh and measure your pet.

Besides, it is necessary to take care of the hair, check the ears and cut the nails. Subject to all standards of care for the beagle, this dog can live about 15 years of a happy life. There are rare cases when these dogs live longer than this period.

Standard sizes

Breed norms were approved in 1988 by the English Club:

  • weight;
  • height;
  • proportions;
  • color.

The height at the withers for males should be 36-41 cm, for females - 33-38 cm. Body size (medium) in length in males is 45-47 cm, in bitches - 41-43 cm. Girth of sternum - 62 cm and 60 cm respectively.

The color of the beagle can be spotted, speckled and variegated. All of them are divided into tricolor and bicolor. Primary colors in the colors: white, black and red. The only option for mono-color can only be a completely white coat color.

Purebred dog is determined by additional parameters:

  • the chest should be wide so that the heart and lungs are correctly positioned;
  • physique - stocky athlete should not look fragile or heavy;
  • the bones of the muzzle are parallel to each other;
  • ears strictly up to the tip of the nose;
  • the lower back should be short and the neck strong enough;
  • with an elongated body, the legs are not too short;
  • the tail is straight and long;
  • the back of the body with developed muscles.

The beagle’s physique is athletic. The head is of medium length, moderately large skull, on the back of the head is a tubercle. Ears hanging, tail straight, medium length, with a white tip. The eyes are large enough and convex. The lips sag slightly, the jaw has a scissor bite. Character traits: stubbornness, endurance, quick reaction in emergency situations, dexterity, ability to make independent decisions. Very friendly dog, loving children. Possesses a lively mind and attentiveness, non-aggressive. Poorly tolerates loneliness. This breed was bred specifically for hunting escort, so the dog must have the ability to follow the trail.

By standards, these dogs are very proportional, the length from the ground to the elbow should be half the height at the withers. Any deviation from the norm is considered a defect.

The severity of flaws is usually estimated based on the physical and psychological state of the dog and the ability to perform duties as a hound.

Maximum parameters

Beagle has three varieties of the breed: English (European), American and French. The latter is not found at all in Russia. Americans are much larger than their European counterparts. Their maximum height reaches 41 cm, and among the British - only 33 cm. The structure of the skull is also very different, the American type with an angular head, while the European one is rounded.

The maximum weight that an adult male dog can reach is 16-18 kg, subject to the normal development, activity and mobility of the dog, as well as maintaining the proportions of the body. Subject to the same criteria, the maximum female weight may be 14-17 kg.

Description of development by periods

From birth to 3 months

In the first month, the puppy gains weight, about four times its weight at birth. During this time, the cubs are very similar to each other, regardless of gender. Differences will be visible only by two months, when the puppies become like a small copy of their parents.

By the age of three months, the calves should gain weight about 6 kg, and their length at the withers will reach 30 cm. Normally, girls may be slightly smaller than boys throughout their developmental years.

3 to 6 months

At this time interval, the main development of the bone system, chest, hind and forelimbs occurs. By six months, the weight is doubled compared to the weight of a three-month-old kitten. Growth reaches 35 cm.

6 to 12 months

Dogs gain their proper weight, growth reaches a maximum. In a year, the male grows up to 40 cm, the female - up to 38 cm. Within 12 months, the beagle must acquire all the development skills of an adult animal. At this age, this is a full-fledged mature dog. The growth of girls sometimes ends even earlier, with the advent of the first estrus.

Psychologically, individuals of this breed are also already formed by this time and must comply with standard norms not only in physical development, but also in behavior. If the dog is properly raised, he will not be cowardly and aggressive.

A trained beagle has a stable psyche and can obey his master.
