Mestizos are a special kind of dog. They do not belong to thoroughbred individuals and are not mutts. By the appearance of a newborn puppy, it is impossible to predict which breed of genes will dominate in it.

What it is?

Mestizos - puppies received from parents of different breeds. They appear for several reasons.

  • When the owner did not keep track of the dog, and there was an accidental mating. Animals can take on the character and appearance of both parents. The result is unpredictable and you should not pay money for such puppies, they are given “in good hands”.
  • The deliberate work of breeders to cross different breeds of dogs in order to improve their exterior, working qualities, physical, mental and mental capabilities. Such puppies are called "designer breed", some of them cost a lot of money. The result of the work can be a puppy whose genotype consists of three, four or even five types of DNA from its thoroughbred ancestors.

The process of mixing different species to obtain new qualities is called "interbreed outbreeding" and has fourteen centuries. People have long deliberately led dogs for hunting, guarding, or just for fun. In the latter case, we have breeds of decorative dogs, the origin of which our ancestors still worked on.

Métis should not be confused with mutts. They are children of titled parents in their exterior, the breed of one of the ancestors or both at once should be seen.

If this does not happen, the puppies are called mutts. In casual hybrids, the appearance resembles wild dogs: a strong body, persistent muscular legs, tail with a donut, ears protruding.

    Colors can be very different, taken from one of the parents or mixed. For example, a pomsky may well look like a red Pomeranian fox-spitz, only a mask on its face will give out the ancestors of the husky. Achieving a rare color, the breeders mixed Weimaraner and Labrador, received a mestizo with silver coat. Unusual mestizos are tolmatins, they are endowed with a beautiful spotted color of the Dalmatians, but have a small, slightly elongated body, similar to a dachshund. Horgi can be found with a coloring and a husky mask and long corgi coat.

    Mestizos have many positive qualities. Mixing blood leads to its renewal. In most cases, babies are born with good health. Hereditary diseases of thoroughbred parents bypass them. And the psyche of such dogs is more stable. Most mestizos are smart and friendly, but there are exceptions.

    Character

    It is impossible to predict the mestizo line of behavior; they can take the traits of both parents. But they have every chance to get the best from their ancestors. If outbreeding is carried out by professional breeders, except for the exterior, they will be interested in working opportunities. For example, I want to see a dog that is not too big, but with security qualities, for this poodle is mixed with guard dog breeds. More often than not, a clever loyal dog of medium size is obtained. She will not bark at the guests, but she will not let the stranger out of the house. There are exceptions to the rules when a huge good man grows up in a cramped apartment. He will not bark, even if all things are taken out of the house.

    In most cases half-breeds are quite adequate dogs, not aggressive and sociable. But some hybrids require special education. For example, crossbreeds of small breeds are too shy, or, on the contrary, do not know fear, bully to large dogs. And the mestizos of large guard dogs are difficult to train, they should be educated from childhood.

    Each hybrid shows its qualities characteristic of both breeds, namely:

    • if mixed husky and corgi, the dogs will be kind, intelligent, they carry out the master's commands well;
    • Bloodsors (a mix of Bloodhound and Moscow Watchdog) hardy, smart, endowed with a sharp sense of smell, they can serve as service and guard dogs;
    • pittsky (pit bull and husky) infinitely loyal to their master and kind, but from a husky they inherited a masterful disposition, which can only be corrected by good education;
    • tolmatins - are good-natured and cheerful, but if the Dalmatian genes get the upper hand, the mestizos may not be too smart or stubborn.

    All the shortcomings of the character of the half-breed can be corrected by persistent and proper education. It is more difficult to do this if the dog came into adulthood from unknown owners.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Mestizos are amazing animals, unlike thoroughbred dogs, their exterior is always individual, in each the nobility of ancestors is guessed. The advantages of these animals include the following:

    • good immunity, lack of hereditary diseases;
    • they have no mental disabilities;
    • mestizos are most often friendly, accommodating and sociable;
    • their maternal instinct is more developed than some tribal breeds; they responsibly nursing and feeding their puppies;
    • hybrids do not require special care and nutrition;
    • adapt well to new conditions;
    • their cost (if it’s not designer breeds) is low.

      Mestizos also have such disadvantages as:

      • the result of mixing is always unpredictable, it is difficult to know in advance the size and temperament of the pet;
      • a mestizo, which has a strong resemblance to one of its parents, can be passed off as a purebred puppy;
      • hybrids do not have a pedigree and documents;
      • they do not participate in exhibitions.

      Varieties

        There are hundreds of dog breeds on the planet. If you mix them together, you get thousands of species of mestizos. But there are not many designer hybrids.Breeders try to prevent accidental mating. The hybrid, created by a professional, wears the improved qualities of its parents, sometimes interesting and strange species are obtained. Let's consider descriptions of the most popular mestizos.

        • Labradoodle. The mixture of Labrador and Poodle became the first hybrid, the so-called designer breed, which was bred in 1988 purposefully to improve working qualities. The Australian Guide Dog Society received an order from a blind woman whose husband was allergic to wool. A guide with hypoallergenic properties was needed. Poodles possess such hair, they began to be crossed with Labrador Retriever, dogs with excellent guide qualities.

        The result is a dedicated, friendly mestizo with hypoallergenic fur, endowed with high intelligence.

        • German shar pei. Outwardly, it looks like a shar pei, only large and with the color of a German shepherd. On the elongated face there may be folds, ears are erect. I took the best from my parents - mind, devotion, love for my family. A pet can be too independent and not too trusting of strangers.
        • Basset Pei. This mestizo is a descendant of sharpei and basset hound. This is a very cute small animal with folded skin, like sharpei, small ears and beautiful eyes. Pets with character, a little masterful, independent and smart. They have a sharp charm, they are careful in relation to strangers.
        • Pomsky. The Union of Pomeranian Spitz and Husky is called Pomsky. Dogs turn out cute, with rich coat, beautiful color. They are small in size and good for keeping in an apartment, provided there is sufficient walking distance. This is a cheerful dog, adoring children and active games. He is smart and completely non-aggressive.

        Because of the ease with which they learn, they are often used for filming movies. The cost of such a dog may exceed the price of its thoroughbred parents.

        • Horgi. Very pretty mestizo. Husky and Corgi dogs became his parents. The dog has a small stature, a balanced physique, a beautiful coat color and a peculiar blue iris. A keen, curious dog, playful and friendly. If he has nothing to do, he can make digs and make a commotion in the house.
        • Siberian Retriever. We are talking about a cross between a golden Labrador Retriever (Golden) and a Siberian Husky. With an equal set of genes from both parents, the puppy has a double color of fur - chocolate with the addition of white. If the genes stack differently, the coat color repeats the color of one of the parents. Mestizos have a sky blue eye tint. Dogs swim well and are unsurpassed hunters. They are smart, restless, one might say, too energetic. They need a long walk with physical activity.
        • Labsky. The parents of this mestizo are also a Labrador and Husky. Outwardly, the look of the dog is very impressive, since the Siberian genes prevail in the exterior, it looks like a wolf. Without a good upbringing from puppyhood, it will be difficult to cope with a dog, he is savvy and on his mind, wayward, with the claims of a leader. From childhood, he will have to explain who is the boss in the house.

        During walking the dog is forbidden to go in front of the owner, control the manifestation of self-will. This mestizo is not for beginners.

        • Utonagan or Northern Inuit. Different breeds participated in the creation of this hybrid: German Shepherd, Malamute, Husky and others. A hybrid is like a white wolf. He is handsome, hardy, very strong, has Siberian health. Hereditary diseases are not revealed at all, can live more than fifteen years.
        • Shepsky. This is a mixture of shepherd and husky. Metis has good security qualities, but does not know a sense of proportion. If he senses the slightest threat, he may attack. Shepsky should not be left alone with children or guests. They are settled in enclosures, even cold winters will be comfortable for them. But dogs need a daily walk.

        Métis is best kept by dog handlers or experienced dog breeders.

        • Husky. The parents of the mestizo are Eskimo Spitz and Husky. Husky has a soft, good-natured disposition, but the dog is excessively curious and prone to leprosy in order to extinguish his energy, he needs many hours of daily walks.

        Content

        Mestizos come in different destinations. Decorative species live in apartment conditions, but many dogs are designed to live in enclosures. They have guard, fighting or detective qualities. By creating hybrids, breeders achieve endurance and good adaptation of animals to the external climatic environment. Domestic dogs need outdoor walks, they should be played with, loaded with trainings.

        For lazy owners, there are types of small mestizos that do not need daily walking, for the toilet they use a cat's tray or an absorbent diaper.

        Hybrids do not need to create special conditions of detention. They need their own corner with warm bedding and without drafts, clean bowls for eating and water, special toys intended for dogs. If the mestizo is endowed with long hair, it should be combed out. Bathing dogs is necessary as they become soiled. After walking on the street, you need to check your pet for ticks, look at your eyes and ears in order to eliminate inflammation and suppuration in time. Dogs should periodically brush your teeth. If during the walk, the claws of the pet do not grind naturally, they are worth periodically cut.

        As for health, mestizos rarely complain about it, since they have an enviable immunity and do without hereditary diseases. But this does not mean that the dog does not need hygienic care. Vaccinations and preventive examinations at the veterinarian are necessary for all dogs. Infectious diseases with close contact with a sick animal can be picked up, even with stable immunity.

        With proper care, hybrids almost do not suffer from allergies and live longer than purebred dogs.

        Feeding

        Mestizos are not picky about food, special foods are optional for them, but homemade dishes with excess fat and spices will not bring any benefits. Chicken tubular bones can injure any dog’s jaws. They should cook porridge with vegetables, meat and fish products. When compiling a diet for a pet, its age and weight, as well as physical activity, should be taken into account. For active healthy puppy growth its nutrition should consist of 30–40 percent of protein, the presence of carbohydrates will give energy.

        The menu may include special dog food, they are fully balanced. But if the dog eats natural food, it is enriched with supplements of vitamins and minerals.

        Training

        Most mestizos lend themselves well to training, some difficulties can arise with hybrids in the creation of which the husky participated. They often show independence and self-will, they should be dealt with from an early age. Half-breeds are more savvy than their thoroughbred parents. If you start training your puppy from three months, you can achieve amazing results. Knowing the mestizo parents, dog handlers focus on their behavioral lines, forming obedience, kindness, sociability and other necessary qualities in a pet.

        Mixing breeds causes significant changes in the nature of mestizo. A cross between a good labrador and guard or fighting dogs changes his temper to aggressive. In such cases good parenting is essential.

        Mestizos are pets with an original appearance, good health and improved qualities of their parents. They are unpretentious in maintenance, faithful and, if properly educated, will become ideal pets.
