These fluffy little dogs took possession of the hearts of many, but the English queen, who was the founder of their breeding, was the first to appreciate their beauty and loveliness.
Origin
The breed has more than one hundred years, the first mention of the Welsh Corgi was in the X century in Wales. It is known that these dogs were excellent shepherds. Having short paws, they could easily dodge the hooves of animals when they helped in shepherding. This breed is one of the first related to shepherd. Welsh Corgi is divided into 2 types:
- welsh corgi cardigan;
- welsh corgi pembroke.
One of the legends says that forest nymphs introduced these dogs to humans, using them as sledges. This explains the spot on the back of the Pembroke, resembling a saddle. Welsh Corgi is usually classified as a shepherd family, only dwarf ones.
Despite their attractive appearance, dogs of this breed were not popular, but acquired it in 1892 after their first participation in the exhibition. And after half a century, the breed became world famous when the king of Great Britain gave these puppies to his 2 daughters. One of them, Elizabeth II, started breeding the Welsh Corgi.
Description
Welsh Corgi Cardigan and Welsh Corgi Pembroke differ quite significantly from the point of view of professional breeders. Although a simple layman is unlikely to distinguish that the species are different. Pembroke Corgi is shorter in size and has a different head shape than a cardigan. A corgi cardigan has longer legs, which makes this variety more efficient than pembrokes. The latter have recently observed more and more deviations from the norm both in weight and in height, and the legs remain unchanged in length, which makes the ground clearance even smaller, due to which they seem less agile and suitable as a home decorative dog.
Cardigans also have a wider chest, excellent posture, the outlines of the skull are aristocratic and resemble the mini-face of a large German shepherd. And Pembrokes, in turn, more evoke a smile of emotion. Because of the jaw contoured, it seems that the Pembroke Corgi is smiling. Their head shape is like that of a fox.
The color of Pembrokes differs from the color of cardigans in more saturated tones. The colors are varied: from golden-red with white spots to black, but this is very rare. The most common colors are tricolor: brown-white-black with different shades. And cardigans are known for their tiger color.
Dog hair is almost the same length as the shepherd, but the cardigan is tougher than the pembroke. The undercoat is thick and repels water well. The growth of cardigans according to the standard is from 26 to 13 cm, and the weight ranges from 12 to 17 kg, depending on the sex of the dog. Pembrokes reach growth from 25 to 30 cm, and weigh 13 - 20 kg.
Another significant difference is that Pembrokes were often born scanty, or they stopped their tails until in many countries they were forbidden to do this, and it is simply impossible to meet a short-tail cardigan. In this regard, Pembrokes began to look more like foxes when it turned out that their tail was fluffy, and the muzzle also very much resembles a fox.
Cardigan has a slightly longer life expectancy than Pembroke. The average is 12 to 15 years.

- Great mind: very easily trained, it will be a pleasure to train this dog. Even a novice can handle this.
Disadvantages:
- Cost. Due to its popularity, this breed is quite expensive. A thoroughbred puppy from professional breeders will be released in about 60 thousand rubles.
- Voiced voice. The breed is not talkative, but if your pet was taught to bark, then the dog’s voice will amaze you. When you do not see who is making sounds, you might think that a German shepherd barks, not this little one. If the dog is not weaned from barking, then he will do it with pleasure and very often. Therefore, if you are not comfortable with this situation, take care of the re-education of the dog.
- By virtue of their direct appointment as a shepherd, Corgi often bite people on their heels. Apparently, the instinct affects when in this way these dogs acted on livestock in the performance of their shepherd duties. If you don’t wean this habit from childhood, the dog will always strive to bite you and household members by the leg.
- Voracity. It is necessary to carefully approach the diet of this dog.Otherwise, Corgi is facing obesity, and with it the diseases associated with this adversity.
- Activity. The fact is that these shepherd dogs are used to moving a lot. The accumulated energy should be splashed out by walks 3 times a day, otherwise the Corgi puppy will turn your cozy house into a gnawed one.
- They are completely unsuitable for the role of a security guard. Do not try to force the Corgi to guard the house. Because of their mild, evil-natured nature, these dogs love everyone and everyone, so in order not to endanger the dog itself, you should not assign him the duties of a watchman.
- Requires careful maintenance: need to constantly comb out.
Owner reviews
Reviews about the breed are positive. According to most owners, dogs are distinguished by intelligence, cheerfulness, kindness, and learning. Judging by the reviews, the disadvantage is that the dog needs to be bathed often: because of its short paws, the hair on the stomach constantly gets dirty, especially in rainy weather.
All owners also confirm that Corgi needs to walk a lot and for a long time, otherwise unspent energy will badly affect the furniture in the house.
