There are a large number of dog breeds, each of which has its own distinctive character traits and unique appearance. It is the latter that becomes the key factor that affects the choice of a pet.

In addition to the fact that dogs are large and small, short-haired and long-haired, they can be with a tail and without it. There are many breeds, the hallmark of which is the lack of tail.

Scientific research

The absence of such a part of the body as the tail, from a representative of the canine family caused a lot of questions from scientists and researchers. For many decades, brilliant minds have tried to find explanations for this type of mutation in animals. After many laboratory studies, it was concluded that the cause of the lack of a tail in the dog is gene mutations. Individuals that have a short appendage or simply do not have it are called heterozygous.

It is also proven that the presence of gene mutations has a strong effect on future offspring. It is transmitted in 50% of cases.

Crossing two heterozygous individuals is strictly impossible, since the embryo will be affected by a spinal cord disease and die in the womb.

Studies have shown that there are dog breeds that are characterized by gene mutations. Among them are the following dog breeds:

  • Australian Pinscher
  • Brazilian Terrier
  • British Spaniel
  • French Bulldog;
  • Karelian bear dog;
  • Doberman
  • Pyrenean Shepherd Dog;
  • Polish lowland shepherd;
  • Old English Shepherd;
  • Croatian Shepherd Dog;
  • Swedish Walhund;
  • boxer;
  • Boston Terrier
  • English bulldog;
  • miniature schnauzer;
  • rottweiler;
  • welsh corgi.

The length of the tail or its complete absence in these animals depends on many factors that influence the formation of limbs. Of course, this is a pedigree, the presence or absence of a gene of congenital mutation, dominant and nominal genes.

How to choose a puppy?

Choosing a puppy without a tail is just as responsible and difficult as choosing a puppy with an appendage. The main thing to understand is that its absence in a dog is neither a defect nor a disease.

To choose the right pet, you need to follow a series of recommendations, which will be discussed below.

  • It is necessary to determine the breed of the dog and gender.
  • Then you need to carefully study the pedigree. This is required in order to understand from which parent a gene mutation was transmitted.
  • Inspect the tail. You should make sure that the appendage was not surgically stopped, and perhaps the person is dealing with scammers. If the operation was performed, then it leaves a distinct mark in the form of a scar.
  • It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the vaccination card.
  • If you take a puppy in a kennel, you need to be sure of the good reputation of the institution.
