A frying pan is a kitchen appliance designed for frying and stewing food. It has a flat or semicircular shape of the bottom. It can be equipped with a handle for holding during heating. The main materials from which pans are made are: steel, cast iron, aluminum, stainless steel. There are modifications of pans that you can make yourself. One of the common methods of manufacturing this device is the alteration of the harrow disc.

Features

Harrow is an agricultural device with which plowing of the soil is performed. It has a round convex-concave shape. Some types of harrows have a cutting edge containing wide teeth. It is made of durable steel up to 1.5 cm thick. Mounting holes are placed in the center of the harrow, thanks to which it is held in the appropriate position on the drive unit.

The material’s properties, thickness and diameter make the harrow a suitable blank for making a home-made pan.

A wok made from a harrow is ideal for use in camping conditions. It can be installed on improvised bonfire supports, as well as on a special tripod used to hold a round-bottom cauldron. With the independent manufacture of a pan from a harrow, you can equip additional fasteners that allow you to attach supporting legs to it, which significantly expands its functionality and makes it universal.

Instruments

The process of making a pan or wok from a harrow is associated with the processing of metal products.Given this, it is necessary to prepare a minimum list of tools that will allow you to perform this work. The main toolkit contains:

  • welding machine;
  • angle grinder;
  • a hammer;
  • vise;
  • measuring instruments (tape measure or ruler);
  • other related tools.

A welding inverter will be needed to eliminate the holes located in the central part of the harrow and attach additional elements. A grinder is necessary for cutting metal workpieces and their processing, as well as for cleaning welds. Before using it, you will need to prepare cutting and grinding wheels, nozzles for cleaning and polishing.

When welding, the use of a hammer is of utmost importance. With its help, slag deposits arising during the metal overheating at the weld point and covering the weld are beaten off. Under these deposits, defective areas of the joint joints may be located: cracks or voids. Beating off the slag with a hammer, these defects can be identified and eliminated.

The presence of a vise is encouraged, although not mandatory. They help to keep the workpiece in a stationary position, which facilitates the process of its processing. Without a vise at hand, the workpiece can be fixed in any convenient way. Measuring instruments are used to make measurements of the dimensional parameters of the workpieces, which is necessary in the manufacture of fasteners of the supporting legs of the pan.

In the process of remaking the harrow disc into the pan, other tools may be needed, which is determined by the characteristics of the finished product.

Materials

The main component of a home-made pan is a harrow made of durable thick-walled steel. The remaining elements are designed to give it the proper functional form. The following materials can be used to remove the mounting holes:

  • metal plate;
  • iron rod;
  • bearing balls;
  • other items available.

    The thickness of the metal plate should correspond to the wall thickness of the harrow. This will eliminate the mounting holes without violating the inner surface of the pan or its outer bottom. The diameter of the iron rod should correspond to the diameter of the holes located in the center of the wok. If the size of its diameter is less than the diameter of the holes, then the excess space between the rod and the inner edge of the hole can be filled with pipe trim with the corresponding diameter or other metal inserts.

    If the diameter of the rod is larger than the diameter of the holes, the best solution is to equalize these values by grinding the rod. Drilling holes is not considered profitable, since the metal of which the harrow is made is thick and durable. The use of bearing balls as elements covering the mounting holes in the harrow is the best way to accomplish this task. The main difficulty in this case is the search for balls with a sufficient diameter.

    Suitable elements may be balls from a tractor bearing, which can be found among parts on the territory of most auto-dismantling workshops.

    To ensure the convenience of using the pan, it is worth welding the U-shaped handles to the edge of its edge. They can be made of reinforcement or an iron rod having a small diameter.

    Methods for removing holes

    Harrow mounting holes, the diameter of which varies from 15-20 mm, are located in the center of the workpiece, which prevents its use as a frying pan. Their elimination using a metal plate can be done in two ways. In the first case, 2 parts of the plate are welded on both sides of the harrow so that the holes are completely blocked.Welding is performed around the perimeter of the plate elements, which eliminates the occurrence of leaks.

    The location area of the inner and outer plates is cleaned with a grinder and the corresponding nozzle. Particular attention is paid to internal welds, as they will come in contact with products that are cooked in a pan. The presence of cracks and voids in the seams will contribute to the ingress of food particles, which is undesirable. The second way to use a metal plate to remove holes in the harrow is to make round closing elements, the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of these holes.

    The contour of each hole is transferred to the surface of the plate, after which it is cut using a grinder and a cutting wheel. The resulting "tablets" are inserted into the holes and scalded along the line of contact with the inner faces of the holes. When using a metal rod, the task of plugging holes is simplified. The rod is inserted into the hole and scalded. Then its excess parts are cut off. To facilitate this work can be pre-sawed from the rod blanks, the length of which is equal to the wall thickness of the harrow.

    If there are bearing balls of the appropriate diameter, the holes are removed as follows: the ball is inserted into the hole so that it is not visible in the inside of the pan. Welding is in progress. The recess that forms above the welded ball is filled with the liquid metal of the consumable electrode. In the finished form, the pan, in the manufacture of which the bearing balls were used, will have rounded protrusions in the bottom. These protrusions serve as support legs, allowing you to set the pan with a semicircular bottom on flat surfaces.

    The final stage

    In order for the harrow pan to be used in traveling conditions, four pieces of pipe with a length of at least 10 cm are welded to its bottom. The distance between them should be equal, which will ensure efficient load distribution. Support legs will be inserted into these tubes, the height of which should allow the pan to be installed above the fire. At the final stage of manufacturing a pan from a harrow, a thorough cleaning of the surface of the inner side and its subsequent grinding is carried out.

    Any coatings applied to the harrow must be removed, since when heated they will release toxic substances, the presence of which is incompatible with cooking for humans.

    When grinding the surface, it is important to achieve maximum smoothness.. The absence of scratches and furrows left by abrasive materials will prevent food from sticking to the surface of the pan and subsequent burning of food. Since the harrow is a cutting element of the tractor plow, it is necessary to carefully process its outer edge. Using a grinding wheel and grinder, the edge of the pan is rounded.

    Next, you need to make the primary calcination at the stake, which will reveal structural defects, if any.
