Singer sewing machine (in the Russian equivalent "Singer") is familiar to many. In many houses, this device has been stored since the Soviet period. The creator of such a famous machine is the American inventor Issak Singer.

A bit of history

In 1850, in New York, Singer met designer Orson Phelps, who created sewing machines with a circular needle movement. Isaac was pretty impressed by such a simple invention, but still decided to improve the model of the machine shown to him.

His breakthrough was one feature that distinguished his invention from all other machines of that time. Singer invented a mechanism by which the needle began to move up and down when sewing, rather than in a circle.

The method of needle movement he invented formed the basis of all sewing machines of that time. Moreover, at present, all modern machines have exactly the same mechanism.

Over time, Singer founded his company for the production of machines, which was given a name by the name of the creator - "Singer".

The main feature of its products was not only the improved operation of the needle, but also the ability to repair the sewing machine at home. Replacing failed parts has become much easier. Repair was cheaper than sending the product to the factory for repair or purchasing a new unit, because before the Singer machines, repair of sewing machines was exclusively factory.

Sometimes it was easier for people to get rid of the old machine and buy a new one.

Instructions and settings

In the modern world, progress does not stand still, and with each new year more and more advanced models of sewing machines appear on the market. They are more compact and easy to operate.

But what if you inherited the Singer machine? Of course, don't be upset. The old Singer machine is unique. Her line in tailoring is perfect.

Yes, it is possible that older models do not have a variety of trimmings or special stitches. But it was these models that formed the basis of all modern machines.

Singer sewing machine is distinguished by the fact that it has a long shuttle, a large mechanical wheel, a manual (in later models foot) drive.

The method of threading a needle or a spool does not differ at all from modern machines. Perhaps only a difference in the position of the ears and the needle itself.

In order to thread the thread, you need to follow the instructions.

  1. First you need to rewind the thread from the spool to the bobbin. In modern cars, this action can be done automatically. In old Singer, this must be done manually.
  2. Then install the coil on the upper pin. There may be two of them, choose any that you like.
  3. Next, you need to thread the thread under the tension regulator and push it into the spring loop. Then pull the thread up to the threader’s eye and pull it in, then lower it to the needle. At the same time, check the thread tension. It should not be too strong or weak.
  4. The next step is to insert the bobbin into the shuttle, and the upper thread into the needle (here you need to know exactly which side you need to thread the thread from: inside or outside). Then you should raise the threader lever up.
  5. For the bobbin thread, the wound bobbin must be lowered into the hook. The shuttle itself needs to be placed in a nest in the sewing platform. Please note: when the shuttle “rises” into the slot, a click should be issued. It means that everything is installed correctly.
  6. Close the shuttle, lower the foot and lightly turn the wheel towards you so that the upper thread captures the lower thread and pulls it up. If you twist from yourself, then the threads in this case will just get confused and tear. That's all - the machine is ready for operation.

Threading errors are very easy to identify. At the moment when you are sewing, the line may begin to “walk” involuntarily. Do not think that you are somehow sewing incorrectly, first you need to check the correct tension of the threads (top and bottom) and adjust them if they are loose.

Antiques

The popularity of Singer machines is not only in their good qualities and ease of sewing. Especially popularizing the device were the legends surrounding the sewing machine.

Most a common myth is to convince people that in some models expensive metals were specially used in the decoration (platinum or palladium).

It is noteworthy that this myth is overgrown with new turns every time. Many argue that it all depends on the year of manufacture, that in the production machine until 1930 there was definitely a platinum shuttle. But the cost of platinum was high even when the Singer sewing machines entered production. But few people know about this.

Not a single antique machine contained precious materials. Such metals are not very durable and wear out quickly.

Speculation at the expense of precious metals and alloys is due only to the fact that the seller wants to sell the machine more expensive, which he absolutely does not need.
