One of the common problems that occurs when a puppy appears in the house is his accustoming to meeting his natural needs in strictly designated places. Being next to mom, puppies often repeat after her and acquire the skill of going to the toilet according to her example. But when they get into a new house and unfamiliar environment, the kids are lost, and the owner should begin to teach his pet how to do his work where necessary. The article will focus on how to teach the Spitz to the tray, diaper and toilet on the street.
Toilet in the apartment
First of all, you need to decide how the pet will relieve the need. It all depends on the availability of family members and free time for walks. If the owner will not be able to walk the dog regularly every day, then an appropriate option would be to organize a toilet in the apartment.
Since Spitz are very small dogs, they can walk both in the tray and on the diaper.
It is important to start accustoming the puppy to the right place to cope with the needs from the very first days of his appearance in the house.
But first, you need to prepare the place and conditions in the apartment to help the crumbs better to navigate and rather get used to the new rules.
- The corner where the toilet will be organized for the pet should be relatively secluded. The corridor or passage room will not work. During the process, the dog should not be scared and distracted by loud sounds, conversations, the presence of people.
- Near the place where the toilet will be located, it is better to remove all carpeting in a radius of 1.5-2 m. The fact is that at first the puppy or adult dog can go to the toilet by the tray or to the very edge of the diaper. Once on the carpet, urine will leave a lasting odor on it.In the future, the pet will be guided by it and will gradually switch to carpet, ignoring the nearby toilet.
- For male dogs, you can build a small column in a tray made of wood or plastic. Instincts, perhaps, will persuade the doggie to do his business “dog-like”, leave a mark on the “tree”.
- If the Spitz constantly relieves the need for the wrong place and ignores the tray or diaper prepared for him, you can try to attract him with the smell. To do this, moisten the tissue in his urine and put it in a dog's toilet. The smell will attract the dog to this place when it once again begins to look for a corner for privacy.
- Special sprays are a good helper for dog owners in accustoming pets to the toilet. They can be purchased at pet stores and veterinary pharmacies. The spray is sprayed where the pet left its mark, in order to prevent the re-fulfillment of needs in the same place. For a person, the smell of the spray is not felt at all, but it acts irritatingly on dogs. Due to this, the tool well prevents the pet from trying to go to the toilet at home where it cannot be done.
Diaper training
Often, the breeder himself educates his puppies on how to properly cope with the need, so the buyer can get a smart little kid who will not cause much trouble. Otherwise, you have to teach the Spitz to the toilet, as they say, from scratch.
- First of all, a small aviary should be arranged for a little puppy. To do this, you can fence off a corner in one of the rooms.
- In the early days, you will have to cover with diapers the entire space of the aviary. In this case, the Spitz descends on the litter and begins to get used to it.
- Then part of the diapers must be removed and only a small space in the aviary left covered.
- When the puppy does its work as it should, be sure to encourage him, caress and praise.
- If the dog is trying to go to the floor with the owner, you need to transfer it to the diaper.
- Letting puppies out of the aviary, it is worth watching them. At the first sign that the puppy is looking for a toilet, it should be directed to the enclosure where the litter is located. To understand that a dog needs to be catered for is a snap. This is evidenced by the active sniffing of the floor, stamping and whirling in place, screeching or whining.
After some time, the Spitz puppy will firmly figure out for himself where to recover. He will begin to independently return to the aviary and do his business on the litter without a miss. After this, the corral can be dismantled - the dog no longer needs to limit the space. The diaper must be placed in the place chosen for the dog's toilet.
Do not forget to change the litter as it becomes soiled.
How to teach walking in the tray?
If it was decided to use this option to organize the toilet of your pet, then you should start by choosing a tray. In this case, one should adhere to several criteria, which will be discussed below.
- The capacity should be quite large so that the dog can stand in it with all four paws, and there is a small reserve of space in it. A cat’s toilet is not suitable, since it can periodically walk to the very edges or past into a small tray of Spitz.
- It is worth paying attention to the sides - they should not be too high. It is necessary that such a small dog, like a Spitz, could easily and comfortably climb into its tray.
- For Spitz boys, a column installed there will be a good incentive to do their work in the toilet. This trick works especially well during puberty and attracts an adult Spitz to leave a “mark”. The tray for the girl does not require the installation of additional luring structures.
- It is best to choose a tray with an optional mesh tray. In this case, the dog will not touch the bottom of the tank with its paws and stain them.
- Often puppies, playing, drag or flip their toilet. For this reason, you need to choose a tray heavier than usual or you can build a weighting material yourself from any materials at hand and attach it to the bottom of the tank.
The algorithm of actions looks as described below.
- First of all, you need to place the tray in an accessible place for the puppy. Then you should introduce the dog to the location of the toilet. To do this, bring the Spitz to him, give a sniff.
- At first, it is recommended to put a diaper in the toilet, instead of a filler. It absorbs fluid and odor well, and is also a familiar reference point for the puppy.
- As in the case of a diaper, if the owner saw that the baby is sitting in the wrong place, you need to transfer it to the tray.
- At first, you need to encourage your Spitz every time he does everything right.
- When the pet independently and without errors will go to the toilet only in the proper place, the diaper can be changed to a filler.
Toilet on the street
Optimal for the beginning of accustoming the Spitz to re-setting on the street is the age of 4 to 6 months. By this time, the dog is quite developed in order to endure before a walk.
It is important to make all vaccinations Spitz and comply with the quarantine period so that the walk does not harm the health of the pet.
It is best if the owner takes a short vacation for a few days, since you will have to take the dog out into the street for the first time several times.
During the first walk, the Spitz can experience stress. It is recommended to carry it out of the house in your arms. Be sure to fasten the dog on a leash so that it does not run away, being afraid of loud street sounds, strangers or other dogs. If possible, you need to walk with your spitz in unsightly and quiet places (at least during the period when the puppy is just getting used to the street).
When the dog does its work, it is imperative to encourage it with a treat and praise. You do not need to take her away from the walk immediately after that - you should walk another 15-20 minutes. Perhaps the Spitz wants to use the toilet again. If this happens, then again he needs to be awarded his beloved yummy.
In the event that the puppy did not fulfill the need on the street for a long walk, you need to get him into the apartment. Then it is necessary to take him out in two hours. It is worth watching the dog at home. Seeing that the Spitz is clearly preparing to cope, you need to get him out of the house.
It is worth remembering that puppies have a very fast metabolism, so they need to recover up to 10-12 times a day, including at night. In this regard, it is recommended that you leave the dog a toilet in the house in case the owner does not have the opportunity to walk with her on time.
Adults are more patient and over time their metabolism is able to adapt to a specific walking time.
What can not be done?
- Often change the location of the toilet in the apartment.
- Screaming at the animal or beating it after handling the need in the wrong place. It is permissible to speak in a strict confident tone. Under stress, the animal learns much worse, and cruelty leaves a deep negative mark on the dog's psyche.
- Leave successful toilet trips without attention and encouragement.
- Roughly drive the puppy away from the tray or diaper, if he plays with them. In this case, the dog may regard the owner’s reaction as a prohibition on contact with these objects. Accordingly, the Spitz will cease to perceive the tray and the diaper as a place to cope with needs.
