Belbek river in Crimea: description and location
Rivers have always been not only of economic importance to people, but also have been an attractive place for tourists. The adornment of the Bakhchisaray district in Crimea can be called the Belbek River. It is considered a landmark of the territory and always attracts the attention of people.
A bit of history
Belbek flows in the south-west of Crimea in the regions of Bakhchisaray and Sevastopol. The rivers Managotra and Biyuk-Uzenbash participate in its formation. This is a long water source, the duration of which is 63 kilometers. Versions of the origin of the name can be called the following.
- Translated into the Turkic language Belbek means "strong back." In the spring season, when meltwater fills the pond, a turbulent stream of the river is able to rip out trees with rhizomes and carry them along with the flow, keeping them on their “backs”.
- Belbek is the original name of the river valley near the reservoir. Translated from Turkic, the bek is “main”, and linen is “narrow mountain passage”. After a while, the river got the same name.
During the residence of the Kabardians on the upper river, it had a double name. The upper part is Kabarda and the lower is Belbek.
Since 1969, this canyon was recognized as a natural monument.
Until today, the river is a vibrant attraction that nature itself created.
Characteristic and description of the reservoir
The Belbek River is the deepest in the Crimean region. It is characterized by the presence of four tributaries:
- Coccosa - the most powerful river in the Crimea, its source is located on the Grand Canyon;
- Suatkana that includes a small waterfall;
- Bystryanykiflowing through the Karalez valley - it is on this territory that local sphinxes are located;
- Kokce Chokraka - "gray-blue" source.
The lower course Belbek overcomes large clay drifts. The mouth of the river is located in the village of Lyubimovka, located near the Sevastopol Bay. In this part, it flows into the Black Sea. The channel of the reservoir has the form of a ravine with a width of about 300 centimeters.
The upper reaches of the river are located on the slope of the Crimean mountain ranges in the northwestern part. The bed of this section is formed by Ozenbash and Managotra. These are mountain rivers with stormy streams and a strong character of the current. Despite the small width, water bodies with a swift direction carry their water along rocky slopes.
Near the village of Golubinka, the channel of the reservoir becomes larger, its width reaches about 0.5 meters.
When crossing the inland mountain range Belbek already, in this section the river becomes part of the beautiful Belbek canyon. The narrowest point of the river valley is 300 meters wide and 160 meters deep. On the right side of the Belbek Valley are two grottoes. Caves are known for the presence of Cro-Magnons who hunted, fished, picked berries and plants.
Another attraction of the territory is the Syuyren Fortress, which is represented in the form of the remains of walls and towers, as it was destroyed by the invaders.
In the upper part of the reservoir is a hydraulic complex consisting of three reservoirs. The fauna of the most full-flowing river of Crimea is mainly represented by brook trout. This fish is characterized by an attractive appearance, the presence of small shiny scales, each of which has a white outline. A predatory creature lives in the upper reaches of Belbek, it is quite difficult to see it.
Tourists often visit Mount Burun Kaya or Iron. The attraction got its second name due to its similarity with all familiar household items. If you climb a steep climb, you can fully appreciate the beauty of the Belbek River Valley.
Before reaching the top, there is a source of clean and fresh water that anyone can enjoy. It is impossible not to mention the relict yew grove. It consists of yew berry growing for millennia. This rare plant reaches a height of 2000 centimeters.
How to get there
On the way to Belbek, you can meet such settlements that are located along the banks, they help to orient tourists:
- for those who begin their journey from the upper reaches it is worth passing through Kuibyshevo, they get to the village by bus or personal transport;
- when rising against the current, you need to start from Lyubimovka, a bus bound for Sevastopol takes people to this point;
- if there is a desire to see many attractions, then the village of Tankovoye or Small Sadovoye should be the beginning of the road.
River use
The Belbek River Valley is a pretty picturesque place, as it is characterized by full-flowing, people have long settled in this region. Here are concentrated not only man-made, but also natural monuments. The water in the pond is characterized by turbidity, so it is not suitable for swimming. However, Belbek Valley is just perfect for outdoor recreation and reunion with nature. This place has already been appreciated by hiking tourists and fishermen.
Fish catches in the river are good, however, for this you need to choose the right place. According to the reviews of fishermen, it is known that the upper reaches of the reservoir are rich in trout, but it is worth remembering that this rare representative of the fauna is under protection. In the area of the flat course, fishermen can catch chub, barbel, carp, crucian carp, carp and perch. Live bait fishers will surely rejoice at the small fish, which is plentiful in the river. Near the mouth you can catch a bearing and trophy pike.
According to people who often fish here, the pike nibble in these places is excellent. The problem of fish withdrawal is created by numerous branches and trunks of river surface.Often fishing is not pumped by a bucket of fish, but by torn fishing lines. The fullness of the reservoir determines its economic use.
The river is important in the activities of residents, it is used for irrigation and water supply.
Belbek also has an artificially created reservoir. Fresh water of this reservoir is very important for people living on the territory. Despite the fact that the largest full-flowing river of Crimea is inferior to most water bodies of world significance, it has a lot of advantages. Due to the reliability of Belbek’s “back”, cargo has been transported along the river for many centuries, which supports the vital activity of the population of this territory. Also, the river is an indispensable source of coolness in the hot season.
From the brethren located in the Crimea, it is distinguished by the impossibility of drying out, as well as the turbulent flows and insecurity. The beaches of Belbek have always attracted tourists who want to relax from the bustle of the city and enjoy the beauty of nature.
