False ceilings have long and rightfully occupied one of the leading places in the industry of construction and repair of residential and public buildings. They were appreciated by Russian and foreign designers for simplicity, convenience and low cost. In this article we will analyze the types, features, as well as the pros and cons of suspended ceilings for the bathroom.
Features
The main feature of the ceilings in the bathroom is that They must be resistant to humidity and temperature extremes. Everyone knows that the bathroom is a whimsical room, and if an excellent solution in the form of ceramic tiles was found for the walls, the ceiling, as a rule, was plastered and bleached. Due to the constantly changing humidity in the corners and in the open areas of the plastered ceiling, mold and fungus often appeared, and even partial peeling of the plaster layer, which undoubtedly spoiled the whole view.
Before the appearance of suspended structures, the ceiling remained a problem area of the bathroom and toilet.
Now there is a wide variety of ceiling systems as an alternative to stucco, which are well established for use in bathrooms. Let's look at the main types.
Kinds
There are several types of hanging structures that are most often used in bathrooms.
Rack and pinion
Such a ceiling is a set of plastic battens or lining. Wooden slats are used quite rarely, since wood is not the best material for the ceiling in the bathroom due to the rather high humidity. If you are an adherent of ecostyle and by all means want to use a lining, then it is necessary to ensure that over time it does not deform and does not become moldy.
To do this, it is imperative to use a moisture-proof impregnation or varnish in several layers. Make sure that the protective layer penetrates into each slot and each groove. In addition to the primary treatment of wood with protective varnish, this procedure will need to be repeated once every 1-2 years. And if the family is large, and the humidity is constant, then 2 times more often. Of course, in addition to this, the bathroom should have excellent ventilation.
Therefore, take care in advance, even at the stage of the start of repair, about the presence of a ventilation system, and, if necessary, put a forced exhaust hood. It can be connected so that when the light is turned on, it automatically starts to work, and when turned off, it turns off. You should monitor its cleanliness regularly, and as soon as it becomes clogged with dust, pull out the grate and clean it of dust and dirt.
It is necessary to mount the rack ceiling on a wooden crate, which also needs to be protected from moisture.
As for plastic slats, everything is much simpler here. The plastic is lightweight, is not afraid of moisture, does not require any additional processing and is not deformed, so it is more popular than wooden battens. During installation, the light weight of the rails does not burden the hands. Mounted on a wooden or metal crate.
If the room is small, then, in addition to the frame around the perimeter of the room, only one stiffener in the middle is enough, if large - then there should be more such ribs at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other so that the flexible rails do not sag and break in case of a flood from above .
This ceiling looks quite aesthetically pleasing, the place of fasteners is not visible, since it is hidden in a groove into which the next rail is inserted. Fasteners can be self-tapping screws (wooden or metal crate) or metal staples that are fixed with a construction stapler (wooden crate). Stapler work is undoubtedly faster and more convenient, but fasteners with screws are more reliable.
There is also a market rack ceiling with aluminum inserts, which makes it more interesting. The lamellas are fixed at a certain distance from each other, and an aluminum strip is inserted between them.
Ceilings from both wooden and plastic battens can be assembled with your own hands, without even having special skills.
Made of plastic panels
Just like a rack, a ceiling made of plastic panels is quite easy to assemble according to the same principle. However, the panels can have a fairly extensive size range in width - from 10 to 50 cm. The wider the panel, the more monolithic the ceiling looks due to the lack of a large number of joints. In addition, the panel can be both smooth and grooved.
In terms of color, the choice is also very large - from plain to multi-colored. One has only to choose a suitable color for the overall interior of the bathroom. The shape can be either classic long or square.
For the installation of square plates, you need to make the appropriate crate, observing the dimensions of the panel, or use an already finished one.
Tension
The today’s stretch ceiling is the most popular. Its cost is not much higher than previous models, but not inferior in quality. He is not afraid of any floods, withstands the accumulation of water without leaking up to 100 liters. The PVC film that makes up the ceiling will simply stretch out at the point where the liquid has accumulated, and after draining the water, it will return to its previous form. Numerous colors without problems will allow you to choose exactly the color that you need. And with the help of a special printer, you can apply any pattern or picture to the film.
There are canvases:
- matte;
- glossy.
Matte ceilings are good in that they look the same as a regular ceiling covered with plaster, while it is perfectly flat and does not glare.For fans of a more interesting solution, manufacturers of suspended ceilings offer glossy models - they visually increase the space. The darker the color, the more strongly its reflective properties are expressed.
Many are afraid to use black, thinking that it will press on top, causing discomfort. However, the opposite is happening. The darker the shade of the stretch glossy ceiling, the more it is invisible, especially in combination with black and white ceramic tiles on the walls. Of course, this applies only to glossy coatings - with matte such a number will not work, and the black or dark ceiling will, indeed, cause a pressing sensation.
In addition to perfectly flat and flat, the stretch ceiling can be two-tiered and take almost any shape in combination with drywall. He is also good in that the canvases can be combined with each other in color, but in this case the seams will be visible. If you want a seamless ceiling, you should give preference to plain.
Installation of suspended ceilings is performed by specialists. Using a heat gun, the web is heated up to 60 degrees, then it is carefully tucked along the perimeter into a special wall profile and fixed with a harpoon. At first, until the ceiling has cooled, it will emit an unpleasant odor, but after complete cooling, the smell will not be felt.
Drywall
Today it is perhaps the most expensive of all the suspended ceiling, but it is quite environmentally friendly. To create the ceiling, not ordinary drywall is used, which simply crumbles over time, unable to withstand a humid environment, but is moisture resistant, created specifically for rooms with high humidity. It can be distinguished from the usual green paper that covers the plaster.
Using sheets of drywall, you can create various compositions on the ceiling, smooth lines, tiers, niches. It is mounted on a special metal profile, which is mounted to the main ceiling using U-shaped elements. Depending on the quadrature of the bathroom, the required number of stiffeners is calculated for the crate, on which the gypsum plaster sheets will be attached.
After assembling the required design, all the self-tapping heads and sheet joints are putty using strips of self-adhesive building mesh, which prevents the plaster from cracking at the seams. Then the ceiling is primed, plastered and painted on top with a moisture-resistant paint. You can also use decorative plaster, but taking into account the humidity of the room.
Mirror
The mirror ceiling is a tile with mirror plastic, plexiglass, aluminum coating. Since real mirrors are too heavy and expensive, they are worthy substitutes for them. They are mounted depending on the shape on the crate or frame with cells. And also there are tinted models or with a picture.
Advantages and disadvantages
All construction and decoration materials have their advantages and disadvantages. Consider the presence of both in the total number of suspended ceilings.
Pros:
- ease and simplicity of assembly;
- short installation time;
- allows any, the most curved ceiling, to make it smooth without much effort;
- relatively inexpensive;
- in the space between the old and new ceilings you can hide communications;
- large selection and variety;
- almost all options can be made by yourself;
- long service life.
Minuses:
- all plastic and tension materials are not environmentally friendly, emit harmful substances;
- stretch ceilings do not tolerate touches with sharp objects;
- plastic may turn yellow, fade, and melt from heating lamps not designed for these types of ceilings;
- mirror surfaces may fade over time.
Lighting
A simple ceiling can be decorated with lighting by arranging the bulbs in some unusual way, for example, a rhombus, a circle, a zigzag.
In a bathroom with a mirror ceiling, 2 times less lamps are required, since the mirror surface perfectly diffuses the light. For stretch - special LED lamps are used that do not heat up. Lamps with halogen bulbs are suitable for plastic ceilings, the power of which is selected depending on their quantity and your preference for the degree of illumination.
