Jeans are so firmly settled in our wardrobes that modern life is hard to imagine without this comfortable casual wear. One of the main advantages of denim is that this material is very wearable. If you follow the simple rules of care, then denim fabric for many years does not lose its original appearance.

That is why denim clothes are so often reworked. After all, if a thing is no longer suitable for you in size or has bothered, but at the same time is in excellent condition, the most appropriate solution is to give it a new life, turning it into something else.

In today's article, we will tell you about how to update old jeans, turning them into a cute, stylish sundress.

Which pattern is better to take?

The choice of patterns for sewing a sundress from old jeans will depend on who the new thing is for. If you plan to sew a sundress for a child, then for the sample you can take one of the dresses from the wardrobe of your little fashionista.

The main thing is to choose a thing in which the girl is comfortable, and which fits her size.

With an adult sundress, the situation is somewhat different. In this case, the pattern will have to be done independently. For beginner needlewomen it is better to choose the simplest option, consisting of three to four parts, for example, an apron type sundress.

A suitable pattern can be found in magazines and books on needlework or on specialized sites. Also circle the existing apron.

So, the old jeans are ready for rework, the pattern is selected and done.

Now we need to prepare tools and materials that are useful to us in our work:

  • bright fabric for decoration and decor (you can use a simple chintz);
  • fasteners (buttons or buttons);
  • threads
  • sewing spreader;
  • crayon, remnant or washable marker;
  • cutting scissors;
  • set of safety pins;
  • sewing machine;
  • iron;
  • decorations (optional).
  • The first step will be cutting jeans. First cut off the upper part at about mid-thigh level. Then cut each leg along the center (but only in front).
  • You should get two long canvases that you need to connect together and grind. This will be the middle of the front of the product. Iron seam allowances in one direction from the front. To better fix them, you can lay a line on a typewriter using thread in tone.
  • We proceed to the design of the bib. In the upper part of the canvases we draw the sleeve armholes and cut off the excess material according to the marking. Slices can be processed with an inlay cut from a fabric of a contrasting color. A frill on the hem and decorative elements will be made of the same fabric.
  • You can buy a finished bag, or you can cut it yourself from any material you like. In order to sew an inlay on one cut, cut off a strip of fabric of the appropriate length. The width of the collar should be twice as large as that of the finished edging (do not forget to consider the allowances for the seam).
  • Sew the edges of the cuts on the back of the product with a single overlock. Take the tape and iron the seam allowances, bend the edges of the strip towards the center. Fold the tape in half in width and iron it well. Then spread out the tape and attach it with one side to the edge of the cut. Next, the part should be ground, leaving a couple of centimeters free to the bend line. Unscrew the strip on the front side and secure with pins. On the typewriter, sew a line around the edge. Such a stitching can be done for all slices, and a frill from the same fabric should be put on the bottom.
  • At the final stage, the finished sundress should be decorated to your liking. To do this, you can use all the tools and materials available to you: embroidery, applique, painting on fabric, rhinestones, beads, etc.

Sundress for the girl

Sewing a children's dress requires less time and effort, therefore, we advise inexperienced needlewomen to start with models for girls.

For the sample, take a dress that is suitable for the silhouette, and transfer its contours to the fabric, taking into account the allowance allowances. In addition, it is assumed that a jeans sundress is worn with T-shirts and turtlenecks, so it should be slightly looser than a regular dress.

When we transfer our “pattern” to the fabric, we should get two parts - the front and back. This will be the body of the sundress, which needs to be supplemented with straps and a patch pocket.

We sew straps from two rectangular pieces of fabric: from the wrong side, fold them in half, then sew, twist and sew again. The pocket is also cut out of the remaining material. At the edges, you can sew it with a decorative stitch of bright threads and put the same stitch in the center of the straps.

We sew the straps, supplement them with two rows of buttons so that you can adjust the sundress in length. We decorate the sundress in any way you like, for example, you can decorate it with a fabric applique depicting your child’s favorite cartoon character.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable with the original color of the material, you can change it at home. For example, the color of old worn jeans can be made more saturated with the help of special dyes for fabrics. And if you want to sew a sundress with a fashionable worn effect, treat the fabric with a bleach based on chlorine.
  • If you want to supplement the product with patch pockets, it is not necessary to cut them yourself. Just open the back pockets from the jeans - decorated with a factory seam, they will look very stylish, even on a children's sundress.
