When we have a pet, we strive to learn as much as possible about it in order to create the most comfortable living conditions for it. In this article we will talk about choosing a name for a parrot, the history of their interaction with people.

Parrots live in all parts of the world, except Europe, Siberia and the northern part of Asia, and of Antarctica, of course. They are very unpretentious, do not take up much space, do not cause difficulties in caring for them. In addition, parrots are very friendly, tamed well and have an amazing ability to imitate human speech. All this has provided them with popularity since ancient times. They were first tamed in India, where they were reckoned as sacred animals. Distribution in Europe began with Greece. They were brought there by one of the generals, Alexander the Great, from an Indian campaign. They quickly gained popularity in Greece, and later in the Roman Empire.

Fashion for these birds has put the entire population at risk of extinction. They made effigies for ladies' accessories, kept in houses, gave as gifts, in addition, many birds died during transportation due to improper conditions. The budgerigars so popular today appeared in Europe only in the 19th century. They immediately gained universal love due to their unpretentiousness and the ease with which they mastered speech.

At the moment, societies and circles of lovers of these birds are being formed all over the world, which facilitates the process of artificial breeding and selection of parrots.

Name Selection Rules

In order to facilitate communication with the bird, you should choose a suitable name for it. There are some simple rules.

  • Try to ensure that the name you want to give the parrot is not consonant and does not repeat the names of other family members. So it will be easier for the bird to understand that they are turning to it.
  • Choose a nickname based on the nature and characteristics of the pet’s behavior.
  • As the nickname, you can use the names of the characters from books or cartoons.
  • Choose a nickname taking into account the speaking abilities of the bird. Each type of parrot has its own set of sounds that are worth or not worth using.
  • Choosing a name for your pet, consider his sociability. Those who like to talk can be given quite long names, and silent people can be given short names.
  • For budgies, you should choose a name with hissing consonants and vowels "and" and "a". Birds are able to imitate the human voice, so you can choose from human names. It is advisable to select short, easy-to-remember names.
  • The most consonant consonants are “k,” “p,” and “p.”
  • Thrush boys are thought to be very sociable, while girls love to be silent.
  • Corellas are able to reproduce even household noise, speak in phrases. The easiest of them are given growling and hissing sounds. It's pretty hard for them to determine gender, so it's better to use generic names.

How to teach a name

Lack of reaction to their nickname in birds happens quite often, especially when not enough time has passed. There may be several reasons for this.

  • The bird has not yet had time to get used to it.
  • The name contains unpronounceable sounds or a combination of sounds.
  • The bird does not like this nickname.
  • The nickname is very long to remember.
  • An emotional contact has not yet occurred between the owner and the parrot. In this case, the bird does not respond directly to humans.
  • The owner turns to the bird, clearly pronouncing sounds.
  • Human emotions are aggressive in color (appeal in raised tones, with neglect or aggression).
  • Perhaps the parrot is already accustomed to some other nickname.

What to do in such situations?

As soon as the parrot gets to the new owner, he needs time to get used to the new situation. Like any beast, the parrot will observe the behavior of the new owner. In this case, the bird does not respond to the nickname, if it does not yet trust the person, does not realize that they are turning to it, the process of adaptation to new conditions is still undergoing. To speed up the process of establishing emotional contact, it is recommended to talk more often with the bird, pronounce its name clearly and slowly.

If the bird still does not respond to the nickname, then temporarily postpone the process of accustoming the parrot to the name and observe its behavior. When you become better acquainted with the nature of your pet, you can change the original nickname to one that more closely matches the bird.

If the bird does not like the nickname offered, then it will scruffy up and pull feathers in itself (parrots do this when they experience severe stress). In this case it’s better not to irritate the pet and pick up a few other nicknames. They should be 3-4. You need to alternately offer them to your pet and look at his reaction. In the name you like, a parrot can raise its head, move its tail or "answer" to you.

If you notice that the pet is responding to some combination of sounds, then perhaps they were present in its old nickname. You can offer a parrot a name containing these sounds, or wait until the bird retrains for another combination of sounds.

Parrots, like other animals, very well feel the emotional color of words. Focusing on the emotional background of the appeal, they decide how to react. If the pet begins to get nervous in the presence of you, or he does not respond to you and goes to the far corner of the cage, then you should pay attention to what emotions you experience when communicating with him. Do not shout at the bird, tell her something in high tones or show disdain for it.

Pay attention to the relationship of the bird with other pets.
