Looking for such an irreplaceable thing in your wardrobe as a coat for your purchase, you probably wondered: why are models that look similar in style and cut so different in price? In fact, the answer is simple: the determining factor in this case will be the fabric from which the product is sewn.

We all buy a coat for more than one season, and therefore, the choice of material must be given due attention, including if you decide to sew a new thing yourself.

Tissue Classification

Types of fabric for tailoring a coat differ in a number of ways:

  • main type of material (cotton, wool, synthetic fiber base);
  • the structure of the canvas (pile, woolen, fine-woolen);
  • the type of thread in the fabric (plain, twisted, double);
  • relief
  • color (plain or melange fabric)

What types of fabrics do coats sew from?

Woolen fabrics

Woolen fabrics in the manufacture of coats have long been in a leading position due to their external qualities and functional characteristics. They are surprisingly warm, comfortable and at the same time light.

Wool-based fabrics vary in composition. They can be pure-woolen (almost 100% wool) or half-woolen (about 50% wool, the rest is synthetic fiber).

Let us dwell in more detail on the first group of tissues.

Coat fabric

Coat fabric is one hundred percent wool, dense, but at the same time very soft to the touch, so it is easily draped.

Boucle

This is a rough material obtained from yarn with large knots in the base or in the weft, located at a certain distance from each other, resulting in a lumpy structure. Due to puffs, this fabric can easily deform and lose a presentable appearance. In addition, due to its loose structure, it is quickly contaminated and difficult to clean.

Gabardine

Loose and stiff fabric with a diagonal weave is made from twisted yarn (as a rule, summer coats are sewn from it).

Tweed

Fabric with a melange effect, rough to the touch, but at the same time elastic, pleasant and practical to wear.

Alpaca

This is a woolen fabric that does not cause allergic manifestations, has healing properties (beneficial for problems with joints), durable in sock.

Beaver

Rigid fabric with a short standing pile on the front side.

Camel's wool

Camel hair has a characteristic light brown color, very soft, excellent heat retention. Such wool, of course, is expensive, as is the wool of goats and llamas.

Cashmere

Cashmere is the most elite fabric for the production of coats; the finest fibers (twice as thin as a human hair) from the undercoat of cashmere goats go to its production. As a rule, it is monophonic, but can be painted in a variety of colors, from pastel to flashy.

Wool Blends

We give examples of woolen fabrics.

The same cashmere can include silk, viscose (which to some extent changes its properties).

Drape varies in composition: in addition to wool (often mottled) it can include nylon, viscose, nitron, and polyester. It is a heavy bulky tissue.

The pattern can be coarse or fine-grained. Inside, the drape has a felt-like structure, which allows you to perfectly retain heat and protect well from the wind.

Crepe has viscose, nylon and nitron fibers. Has a rough structure, stretches very much when worn.

Cotton fabrics

These types of fabric are also practical. They are wear-resistant, hygroscopic, do not cause allergies, are easy to use, and differ in the thickness of the yarn and the way the weave is woven. As for the coat, a whole range of cotton-based fabrics is used for their production. Let's consider some of them.

Cloak

Raincoat fabric - a light, wrinkled fabric treated with water-repellent impregnation, is usually used for lightweight coat models.

Felted knitwear

Felted knitwear in its structure combines softness and a rough surface with a pile, it is very convenient to handle, its fit according to the figure is ideal, lightweight, but at the same time warm, practically does not wrinkle. The front and the wrong side of it do not differ.

Jacquard

Jacquard is a fairly durable material, although its mass is negligible. Outwardly, it is similar to a tapestry, it looks amazing due to an intricate pattern (usually images of flowers). The fabric is durable, easy to clean.

Boucle

Boucle fabric can also be cotton-based.

Velours

Velor - a fabric with a soft pile on the surface, velvety to the touch, looks very presentable and expensive, while it is warm and practical, but it can be wiped off with long wear.

Velveteen

Velveteen has a fleecy surface in a rib, in appearance resembles velvet.

Boiled cotton

Boiled cotton (mercerized) - cotton that has been processed with a special compound. As a result, a noble shine, saturated color, and increased strength are acquired. Products from this material practically do not shrink and do not crease.

Prints

Prints are various images applied to a surface, in this case, the fabric from which the coat is sewn. This is one way to attract attention, emphasize your personality.

"Christmas tree"

There are prints that never go out of fashion, for example, "herringbone" (another name for "corners", "broken strip").As a rule, the Christmas tree is usually made in restrained tones (black, shades of gray and brown). It can be vertical or horizontal.

"Goose foot"

Another no less popular print is the goose foot. It is very stylish, attracts attention with its lines and the shape of the ornament. Traditionally, the “foot” is black and white, but now it is found in a wide variety of color combinations. The size of the cells can vary from a few millimeters to tens of centimeters.

Cell

It is worth mentioning other prints that designers use to create different models of coats. This is a cell that many associate with a warm blanket.

Strip

For several seasons, a strip (vertical or horizontal) does not go out of fashion.

Leopard and geometry

Many fashionistas prefer animal prints (tiger and leopard prints in the first place). And, of course, we should not forget about polka dots and geometric patterns.

Important note: if you choose a coat with a print, then complement it with plain clothes, and no flashy accessories.

How to choose a fabric?

What exactly should I give preference to with all the variety of assortment represented by the modern fashion industry?

Of course, you choose it yourself, because each person has his own perception of tissue, the same material in different people causes different tactile sensations. At the same time, it is worth remembering that outerwear should not only have a presentable appearance, but first of all be practical and functional.
