Dogs are one of man’s oldest friends. To date, a great many different dog breeds are known. This article talks about Greek Shepherds, their features and how to care for them.

Breed description

Greek Shepherd - an ancient breed of shepherd dogs, bred specifically for the protection of sheep flocks. The homeland is considered to be Northern Greece (the name of the breed speaks about this), the most likely ancestors are Turkish ak-bashi. The breed has not yet received official recognition, but this does not prevent it from being used as a guard dog.

Greek Shepherd - a rather tall dog: males can grow up to 75 cm at the withers (average height - 65–73 cm), and females - up to 80 cm (average height - 60–78 cm). The average body weight of males is 45–50 kg, and that of females is 40–42 kg. The physique is powerful, the chest is wide, the body is normal, covered with medium-long hair, the tail is thick and long. There is no specific exterior with regard to coloring, the color of the coat varies from white to black, and spotted colors are one of the most common. Eye color is usually brown, but other shades are also found.

The dog looks rather fierce - this is not surprising with such a powerful addition, but it is very obedient and can instantly "turn off the attack mode." It does not tolerate heat and big cities. This dog was created for outdoor service, where its strength, endurance and dexterity are always in demand. Even large natural predators such as a wolf, fox or bear are not afraid of her.

Life expectancy ranges from 8 to 16 years - it all depends on the conditions of detention, diet and health of the dog.Purebred Greek shepherd dogs are quite rare, most often you can meet them with other shepherd breeds.

There is even a community formed to preserve the purity of her blood.

The ideal option for the Greek Shepherd - a country house with a courtyard and relative freedom of movement, whether it be a spacious aviary, a long chain or even a complete yard at its disposal - depends on how much you want to trust your dog. This breed really needs fresh air, the sky above its head and space, in the city it will wither or become embittered.

From a very early age, teach Greek women to the community of other animals, especially dogs, otherwise you risk getting a suspicious, aggressive and unsociable creature. Of course, these qualities are even welcomed by the security guard, but such a development of the situation has its drawbacks: she will not get along with anyone, the weaker will bully, etc.

Give a lot of time to raising a puppy - it should be tough, but not cruel. Puppy should voluntarily recognize you as leader, and the use of physical punishment will only embitter him and set you against - Greek shepherds have a very good memory. Thick pet coat protects him from the vagaries of the weather, including frost, but requires increased attention, especially during the molting period, and it takes place every six months with the Greek shepherd. When the dog molts, use a furminator to care for the coat.

This dog does not really like water, but does not refuse to swim. Therefore, carry out water procedures as necessary, some experts believe that once every three to four months is enough. In order for the dog to be healthy and beautiful, do not save on food - even though the dog is unpretentious in eating, it is better to have balanced and nutritious premium food than leftovers from the table. Puppies need to be fed three times a day, for adult dogs two meals are enough: breakfast and dinner.

The immunity of the Greek Shepherd is strong, but it’s better not to risk it - give the puppy all the recommended vaccinations and do not forget about the examinations at the veterinarian (at least once a year or at the first sign of malaise).

Breeding tips

If you decide to have a Greek Shepherd, take some quick tips.

  • This dog cannot be kept in the apartment, close to children - she is a great watchman, but a high level of aggressiveness makes her dangerous.
  • To improve the protective qualities (hearing, sensitivity) puppies usually stop one ear.
  • It is always better to take small puppies, and not adult dogs - this is also true for Greek women. If you manage to properly train a puppy, you will not have a loyal guard.
  • Never break down on a dog - Greek women are vindictive and quick-tempered; it is better to adhere to good-natured severity in education. Pampering is also not worth it, yet it is the future watchman.
  • Provide your pet with the possibility of active movement - playing with a stick, a tin plate is perfect for the development of a small shepherd.
  • Consult with your veterinarian about your puppy's diet - for harmonious development, he should receive all the biologically active substances he needs along with food. The ideal option is “holistic” class food, but they are quite scarce and expensive, so discuss alternatives with a specialist. As mentioned above, Greek women are unpretentious, but still health problems in dogs often begin due to malnutrition.
