Beauceron is a beautiful, smart and strong dog that always attracts attention. She is ready to become the best friend and advocate for the family, if her education is done properly. To get a good pet, you should study the description of these dogs and the features of their content in order to be ready for life with a representative of this breed.
Origin history
The Beauceron dog breed came from the French region of Bos. Also, the variety has a second name - French Shepherd. There is no exact information about where such a breed of dogs came from. There are two options that scientists put forward. The first version says that boseron as a breed appeared in the 15th century from peat dogs. Possible ancestors existed in the XIII-XIV centuries in France. The other half of scientists are inclined to the version that Beauceron appeared from a wild wolf.
The second theory is confirmed by the similarity in appearance between animals, but is refuted by habits. The French Shepherd is considered a pet with a high degree of devotion. These pets are reliable companions. Beauceron was officially recognized in the 19th century. In those days, the dog was actively exploited as a shepherd breed, which guarded the herd and shepherds.
The animal was obliged not only to monitor the safety of the flocks, but also to drive the lost sheep, to drive away wild animals from the herd. The French Shepherd perfectly accomplished its goals.
In 1977, the formation of the first club of Beauceron lovers, which existed in France, took place.Until now, this organization monitors the standard of the exterior. It was thanks to this club that the breed was saved during World War II, when the French Shepherd almost disappeared. Breeders managed to keep the animal population. At the moment, this variety is very popular, but in Russia there are few professional nurseries where it is bred.
Breed features
Beauceron is not a very common dog. Often, many can confuse this breed with Dobermans or Rottweilers, as well as with mixed breeds of these varieties with a shepherd. Such a shepherd dog practically did not undergo modifications throughout its existence. This is due to the fact that initially there were few French shepherds and people tried not to interfere with the natural processes of breed formation.
In the future, the club strictly followed the standards and rejected substandard. At the moment, in France and outside this country, there are about 7,000 individuals.
The description of the breed shows that Beauceron is a large dog that does not look too overweight. The height at the withers varies in the following sizes:
- male - 65-70 cm;
- bitches - 61-68 cm.
The standard does not provide for breeding of larger or smaller individuals. Such dogs are considered marriage. The weight of animals varies in the range of 40-50 kg.
Wool and acceptable colors
A barefoot is a smooth-haired dog, whose hair is 3-4 cm long. The back of the body (tail and legs) has a longer coat. The undercoat should be gray, soft, but not visible through the dense outer hair. In the winter season, the undercoat acquires additional density and rigidity. The color is black, with a red tan and stockings of red color. The breed is easily recognized by the tan, which is located on the following parts of the body:
- on the side of the muzzle;
- above the eyes;
- in the chest area;
- under the neck;
- under the tail area;
- on the lower third of the paws (on the inside).
Colors are also allowed, the name of which is “harlequin”. This is a marble color that combines blue, gray and black colors. The tan is located similarly to the previous color.
Appearance
The head has elongated shapes with a characteristic sharpness of lines. The shape of the skull is flat, the rounding on one side smoothly passes to the other. The nose is black, cleft is not allowed. Beauceron's jaw is well developed, teeth are white and sharp. Lips are black and hard. The type of bite is cross. The eyes are elongated, the shape is oval, the color of the iris should have a dark brown color.
Color "harlequin" allows for multi-colored eyes as standard. The ears are triangular in shape, should be half the length of their head. As a rule, they are in a semi-standing state.
The neck is endowed with density and muscle. The back is straight, the waist is powerful. The chest is wide and its girth should be 20% greater than the height at the withers. The long tail is lowered down if the animal is in a calm state. Outwardly, the tail looks like a hook. When the dog moves, it rises a little up. The legs are straight, have developed muscles. The claws are black, the pads on the limbs are stiff.
The French Shepherd has a feature - double extra fingers. This is not a marriage. This feature is taken as an indicator of a purebred animal, which was inherited from the past life of a shepherd. The gait is a wide trot. All movements are smooth and light. The average life of beauceron is 12-14 years.
Possible defects
Deviations in the characteristics of the breed, namely, in the growth and eyes of a light or different color (not taken into account in the harlequin color), are accepted as rejects. Dogs with erect ears, inverted hind legs, nose with a cleft are also not allowed. Shaggy coat, white color - these are also signs of vice.
Nature and behavior
The popular French writer Collette called the French Shepherd "gentlemen from the village." She came up with such a description due to her noble and noble appearance. Animals are famous for their calm disposition, loyalty to the family in which they live. However, Beauceron is wary of strangers. Character traits include intelligence and endurance along with athleticism, courage, readiness for heavy loads.
Animals are always aimed at protecting their households. Such dogs are suitable for experienced and confident people. If you treat the dog correctly, calmly and demandingly treat it, it will quickly learn new skills and try to please its owner in everything.
Beauceron's peculiarity lies in his character as a leader. He must always be first in his pack. This must be taken into account when training and monitor your calm and exactingness along with hardness. Dogs are exceptional in intelligence and independence. and they will never tolerate it if they are treated unjustly and harshly. This is especially true for strangers.
If the owner of Beauceron does not have experience with dogs and will behave too harshly, such an attitude will not lead to anything good. Communication with the dog will be inefficient and dangerous.
The Beaucerons are very fond of their family and are literally ready to get into the hands of their owner. Dogs treat children well, but cannot always take into account their strength and size.. If there are small children in the family, they need to be immediately introduced to the dog, so that the child realizes that the animal must be treated kindly. Beauceron should not be left alone with a child no matter how well the dog treats his little friend.
The French Shepherd Dog may be aggressive towards other animals. But with the animals with which they grew up, they communicate well. The breed is endowed with instincts that force them to lead other animals and people.
Control is manifested in the form of tweaks. This is due to the fact that the dog is a shepherd and should, with the help of weak bites, drive the sheep. Such behavior in the house is not positive, so you should conduct training. Also, such a dog should receive a large amount of physical activity. Beauceron is not suitable for apartment maintenance. The corral does not suit him either.
The breed is distinguished by strength and endurance, which will require heavy loads outside the city limits. A half-hour walk will be too small, so if the dog does not find a way out of its energy, it will become irritated and destructive.
How to choose a puppy?
Every person who wants to become the owner of Beauceron must understand that in Russia such a dog is considered a rarity. Therefore, just to buy a breed does not work. All offers from the bird market will be a hoax. A purebred animal can only be purchased in a trusted nursery that breeds the Beaucerons. Since there are very few such kennels, often a puppy will have to wait a long time.
You can spend time waiting to get acquainted with the breeders, parents of the future puppy, assess their character and mental abilities, and study the pedigree. It is customary to take a puppy home when he is at least 2.5 months old. In the kennels by this time the animal will be able to undergo specialized testing of this breed, thanks to which you can approximately understand what kind of temperament the dog will possess, what working qualities are inherent in it.
When purchasing Beauceron, you should definitely clarify the test result of the selected puppy. Some nurseries neglect testing, so you can use the following rules when choosing.
- Pay attention to the most lively and playful representatives. The puppy should be distinguished by cheerfulness, activity and curiosity.
- At 7 weeks, the puppy should be large, the coat should shine and shine.
- The eyes and ears of the puppy must be clean, an unpleasant odor is not allowed.
- Healthy representatives have thick legs with a strong skeleton.
- On the hind legs two additional fingers will be present.
- The iris should be dark. The darker the better. Harlequins may be odd-eyed.
- The tan is light, with a yellow tint. With age, it can become dark, but it is better to choose puppies whose color initially corresponds to the coloring of the adult representative.
Experienced breeders are advised to resort to recommendations, thanks to which you can choose the right puppy. First of all, you should pay attention to the manufacturer.
- It is necessary to ask the breeder for the results of tests for DTBS, the results of testing behavior and exhibition ratings.
- The pedigree must be carefully studied. Ideally, distant relatives of the puppy should also be tested and trained. If the animal’s nickname is constantly repeated in the pedigree, you need to clarify what the breeder wanted to show. Usually such a gesture is made by dog handlers who fix the character and or exterior of the animal.
- The presence of marriage should also be studied. Special attention should be given to litters with parents who are close relatives.
- If this is not the first litter of the parents of the selected puppy, you should clarify the disadvantages and advantages of past broods.
- You need to communicate live with your puppy's parents. It is best to make acquaintance in neutral territory in order to evaluate the behavior of the animal. Beauceron should not be aggressive or too affectionate towards strangers.
- If adults have certificates from past training courses, you should ask the breeder to demonstrate some skills. Not all documents can be trusted.
- Hyperactivity or excessive inhibition is also not a good sign. If manufacturers have this character, you should think about it. The puppy can inherit the features of its parents in the first embodiment, but it will not be suitable for a family with small children and elderly people.
- If you can’t talk live with manufacturers, you can use the video archive of the Russian Beauceron.
Maintenance and care
The French Shepherd is an unpretentious animal. The main care for them is as follows.
- Combing the animal during molting. To do this, you need a brush equipped with a scraper. Wool should be combed when molted every day. This period is rare, but due care should be taken with it.
- Bathing. A dog should be bathed if it gets dirty. You can not resort to water procedures more than once a month. For washing, specialized shampoos are suitable.
- Claw trimming. Such a procedure will be required only if the claws are not cut in a natural way.
- Daily walks. For walking, you should choose unsociable places where the animal can run without a leash. Often the Beaucerons are occupied by agility.
- Eye care. Systematically remove dirt from the corners of the eyes of the animal. For these purposes, a cotton pad is required.
- Caring for the ears. The ears of the animal must be constantly monitored. Regular inspection and cleaning with a damp cloth will keep them in good condition.
Food
The French Shepherd is an unpretentious breed of dog that can be fed with prepared feeds or natural products. Currently, there are many balanced feeds on sale with which the animal will receive all the necessary components. Each breed has its own menu, which has vitamins and minerals that the dog needs. If the owner prefers natural nutrition, the following recommendations should be considered.
- 30% of the diet should be meat and offal.You can’t feed the dog pork, as it is too oily and can cause gastrointestinal upset or intestinal upset. Breeders are advised to buy beef or chicken.
- 30% should be cereals. Buckwheat or pearl barley porridge and rice should be preferred.
- Fresh vegetables should also be present in the dog's diet. Their number should be at least 15%. Giving fruit to your pet, you need to monitor the reaction of the pet's body.
- Dairy products should also be on the pet's menu. The best choice is cottage cheese and cheese. Dog milk should not be given.
- An adult needs to be fed 2 times a day. The owner must ensure that clean water is present in the bowl. As a treat, you can use products that are sold in pet stores. Feed the animal sweet is unacceptable.
Parenting and training
The final maturity of beauceron occurs at the moment when he turns 3 years old. For this reason, training puppies stretches for a long time. The owner must be prepared for the fact that even the young Beauceron will fight for their leadership in the house. When raising is prohibited:
- trust this process to a stranger;
- be cruel and beat a pet;
- train a shepherd while in a bad mood.
Raising such a breed, you need to get certain skills. A person without experience can easily get an aggressive and stubborn pet instead of his best friend.
If the owner of the dog decided to resort to the help of a training instructor, you need to resort to his instructions, but use them yourself. This is due to the fact that Beauceron is very distrustful of strangers. Education should begin from the first days of a puppy's life in the house. Since the dog is slowly growing up, you should always “keep your finger on the pulse” and strictly control each training process. Since Beauceron does not tolerate monotony and routine, Learning teams should take place in a playful way.
You can’t load the animal so that it does not begin to experience a negative to training. Training begins with the study of elementary rules that will be required in life. These are the commands “to me”, “place” “fu”. The puppy must master the time of feeding, walking. The animal should not chew on shoes and other things, beg for food from the table. No cruelty should be exercised during training, as this will permanently destroy the trust between the dog and its owner.
Only one person should be trainedso that the animal is not confused, and its owner was the main leader in the family.
Studying the team, you should take into account the peculiarities of the nature of your favorite and understand that only with complete trust between the student and the teacher can success be achieved. Training should be consistent. One should not begin to study complex commands until the lungs have been studied. If at any stage there are difficulties, you should go back one step, but do not force the dog to execute commands through force.
Classes should be conducted in a relaxed atmosphere where there are no crowds. In such circumstances, the dog will not be distracted and completely immersed in the learning process. Lessons should be done before feeding or a few hours after eating.
This is due to the fact that the pet needs to be rewarded for success with sweets, and on a full stomach, he will not be able to appreciate the encouragement.
Suitable nicknames
Usually dogs that are bought in kennels already have a nickname. The resulting name can be shortened (since in the pedigree it is very difficult to pronounce) or come up with your own version. When choosing a name, you need to rely on the ease of pronunciation, memorization and convenience. It is best to choose variations of names that begin with a consonant. Since Beauceron is a strong and intelligent dog, the nickname should reflect the character.As a name for a male, you can consider the following options:
- Akbar;
- Amur;
- Barley
- Bayard
- Boss;
- Thunder;
- Grant;
- Ram
- Sherkhan.
Nicknames are suitable for a bitch:
- Bagheera;
- Barefoot
- Dyna;
- Jesse
- Lyme
