For those who have never used this method of hair coloring before, it is worth knowing that henna is a powdery product that is obtained from the dry lower leaves of the bush of Lavsonia, which grows in Central and South Asia, North Africa, India, Pakistan. Thus, this is a completely natural remedy, but how often you can dye your hair with henna without harm to them is a big question.

Why choose henna?

Perhaps the main reason why the great-grandmother's method is used for hair coloring is the lack of ammonia in the product. Whoever dyed his hair at least once remembers this pungent smell and itching on his head during staining.

With the proper use of a natural remedy and the absence of an allergy to paint, there is no itching, as well as an ammonia smell, during staining.

In addition, different types of lavsonia have the following components:

  • aromatic oils, vitamins K and C, supplying the scalp, hair follicles and strands with nutrients;
  • pectins, absorbing harmful substances, reducing hair oily and responsible for the density of curls;
  • polysaccharides that make the sebaceous glands work in a special way;
  • resins that make hair silky and shiny;
  • henno-tannic and other acids that give coloring properties to the leaves of the plant and take care of the antibacterial effect;
  • chlorophyll is a powerful antioxidant that rejuvenates the scalp and promotes skin healing.

Unfortunately, to say with confidence that in front of you is a completely natural henna powder, can only be in a chemical laboratory. That is why users get such different effects from the same tool.

And the individual characteristics of the scalp, hair structure are of the utmost importance.And here there can be only one piece of advice when buying: to buy goods from trusted sellers, having carefully studied the composition beforehand.

Advantages and disadvantages

From quality henna, you can expect the following result:

  • the paint penetrates the upper layers of the hair, aligning the scales: split ends are cured, curls gradually straighten;
  • relieves dandruff;
  • does not cause skin irritation;
  • improves hair structure;
  • protects from ultraviolet radiation;
  • there is no restriction on the use by pregnant women and nursing mothers, if there was no allergy to this paint before;
  • Suitable for an adult at any age;
  • pure lavsonia is an inexpensive means, the price can significantly increase if there are other components in the composition.

The following indicators can be attributed to negative consequences:

  • with a decrease in fat secretion by the sebaceous glands, the hairline gradually becomes brittle and faded;
  • with regular use of paint over time, the destruction of the upper layer of hair is noted;
  • curls gradually straighten;
  • hair is electrified;
  • it is difficult to predict what color will result from using henna;
  • since the hair structure is different for everyone, you will have to individually select the proportions and the exposure time of the paint;
  • gray hair, as more porous, can become not only bright red, but also blue or green;
  • almost all users are convinced that artificial paint should not be applied on top of henna - the effect might not like it much.

How often is this needed?

On the Internet, a huge number of ladies of all ages offer their recipes and reviews for dyeing hair with Lavsonia. And all these reviews suggest that the frequency of staining is very individual. Factors influencing this include the quality and manufacturer of the dye, the length of the hair, the structure and growth rate of the strands, the number of previous stains, skin sensitivity and much more.

  • Since the natural dye is practically not washed off, but only accumulates, usually dye is used once a month for dry hair.
  • For the normal or oily type, it is allowed to dye curls three times a month.
  • But if the scalp is sensitive, then the ratio is reduced to 1 time in 2 months.
  • After curling using chemical reagents or highlighting or coloring, natural paint is not used for a long time.
  • You can tint (correct) the roots as often as required.
  • After the first dyeing, the hair is unlikely to be shiny. But after the second and third times the effect will be much stronger, and the color will be more saturated. The longer henna is used, the less often it needs to be used so as not to injure hair and scalp once again.

But not always hair at home is dyed the first time. It may also be such that the shade is undesirable. In this case, re-staining is carried out. It does not cause severe harm, but it is not worth abusing this procedure, because from frequent dyeing, hair scales stick together, hair becomes heavier. Moreover, such a painting requires much more time than chemical.

Painting Features

There are many ways to dye your hair using a natural dye. They are quite different from each other. To say that some is better and the rest are bad will be unfair. But there is a common technology for painting.

Before starting work, you need to prepare:

  • gloves
  • a brush;
  • a comb;
  • old towel or hairdresser's cape;
  • plastic bathing cap or bag;
  • oilcloth or newspapers on the floor;
  • ceramic or glass bowl (0.75-1 l);
  • mirror;
  • medical petroleum jelly or fat cream;
  • henna (based on 75-100 g for medium-length hair);
  • hot water (about 85 degrees, boil and let stand for 15 minutes);
  • vinegar (not an essence!) or lemon juice.

Now consider the procedure itself in more detail. Wash your hair with shampoo, dry your hair.In some recipes there are recommendations to completely dry the hair.

Dilute the paint (in its pure form or, mixing with other natural ingredients) with hot water so that a lump-free composition is obtained that is similar in texture to a thin cream. The thicker the mass, the more difficult it is to put on the hair, and then wash it out. But the mixture should not flow through the hair either. Some users add a couple of tablespoons of oil to the cooling mixture (burdock, jojoba, ylang-ylang, lavender, lemon or just sunflower), milk whey, pharmacy vitamins in liquid form - this does not allow hair to dry out.

So that the skin on the face does not become red, along the edge of the hair it is smeared with petroleum jelly or cream. Then put on gloves and cover your shoulders with a towel. Use a long, thin handle to comb the partings on the head and begin painting with the roots. Apply the mixture with a brush.

After staining the roots, distribute the paint along the entire length of the hair, first with a brush and then with gloves on.

Lay the completely saturated curls from the roots to the crown as quickly as possible, while the mixture is warm. The warmer the henna, the better the painting.

Put a bathing cap (bag) on your head and wrap it with a towel. The exposure time is selected very individually:

  • blond hair will turn red in a quarter of an hour, dark hair in two hours;
  • if the paint was mixed with other natural ingredients (coffee, basma), then the staining time increases 3-4 times;
  • there are those who hold the paint for 4-8 hours, periodically warming a towel on the head with a hairdryer (you need to be extremely careful with such experiments so as not to be left without hair).

Wash off the paint with ordinary running water. Using shampoo or balm is not recommended, but not everyone follows these recommendations. To give shine to the hair, they are rinsed with water-vinegar or lemon solution. It is important to immediately wash the bath so that you do not have to repaint it later.

In the next 2-3 days, the paint will be absorbed into the strands. Therefore, washing your hair with any detergent is not recommended.

In addition, you should not use light clothing for several days so as not to dye it.

With the help of this paint you can become not only red, but also other colors and shades. It's all about the natural additives that are used in the preparation of the mixture.

  • To create a chestnut color, use henna and basma in a 3: 1 ratio or add 5 tablespoons of coffee to lavsonia.
  • A red tint is obtained if lavsonia is bred with a decoction of chamomile, and turmeric gives a sunny red.
  • The color of the cherry will turn out if you use beet juice instead of water or add 4 tablespoons of cocoa to the water.
  • Two parts of henna and one part of basma will give a bronze color.
  • If the hair is first dyed with lavsonia and then with basma, then the curls will turn black.
