Sneakers are very comfortable, versatile and durable shoes. And for sports or for outdoor activities, they are perhaps the best option. But the active and often even extreme use of this type of shoe leads to their intense pollution. Of course, everyone wants to return to their sneakers a neat look without damaging the material and preserving their shape and practicality.

What pollution are there?

Like other types of shoes, often used to wear under various conditions, sneakers get the most typical pollution:

  • Quite often there is a need to clean these shoes from dirt. Many models of sneakers have an insulated pad and sole, so they can be used in the cold season, when the yard is slushy and damp. Also, when used for jogging in a forest or park, sneakers often come into contact with the ground, which leads to the latter entering the material and the sole of the shoe.
  • If worn frequently or continuously, you may need to get rid of sweat odor. Sneakers are mainly made of durable dense material and have a closed shoe. This is necessary for good fixation on the foot and for the possibility of intense wear, however, the foot in these shoes is practically not ventilated. And synthetic socks will exacerbate the problem.
  • Incorrect washing and drying Soaps may remain on sneakers, which are difficult to get rid of. To avoid this, it is necessary to clean and dry such shoes, observing all the necessary rules.

How to wash?

In some cases, the shoes do not have to be washed entirely. Frequent and unjustified washes should generally be avoided, especially if the inside of the pad is not dirty and has no unpleasant odor. Separate stains of dirt or stains from rainwater can simply be jammed:

  • If the pollution is fresh and not very ingrained in the material of the shoe, then the easiest and most affordable way to get rid of it at home can be laundry soap. Take any hard brush, you can use an old toothbrush. Wet and lather it with a piece of laundry soap. Rub the contaminated area until a soapy foam forms on it. Rinse the foam off gently with warm water.
  • If only the sole of the sneakers is dirty, you can wash it under a warm stream tap water. Typically, the sole material is strong enough and contamination does not penetrate deep into its structure. Take a brush or sponge, substitute the sole of your shoe under a gentle stream of warm water and use a brush to wash away sand and other dirt. For heavy soiling, you can also use soap or laundry detergent.
  • Light soles can be cleaned toothpaste. This composition will not only help remove dirt, but also lighten the material of the sole a little. Using toothpaste, you can also rub off light dirt on light sneakers.
  • To remove stubborn and deeply ingrained stains in the shoe material, you can use chemical stain remover. Such products are commercially available in household chemistry departments. Before use, check the instructions and be sure to specify for which fabrics and materials this composition is suitable.

How to clean quickly?

With prolonged and heavy wear, washing sports, running, basketball or winter sneakers will have to be inside. The algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  • Remove the laces from the shoe and remove the insoles. It is better to wash them separately, having previously soaked them in a powder solution or in a soap solution.
  • To manually clean your shoes inside, soak the shoe under running water. Soap a brush or sponge and rub it on the inside of the shoe.
  • Leave the shoes for 10-15 minutes. During this time, the soap composition will penetrate well into the material.
  • Pour warm water into the basin and rinse the sneakers thoroughly in the water. It is very important to properly wash the sneakers after cleaning, then after drying the shoes will remain in their original form, without streaks.
  • It is advisable to repeat the rinsing several times until the water in the basin becomes clear and soapy foam ceases to form on it.
  • To remove stains that are heavily eaten into the mesh on sneakers, you can use pre-wash with soap or stain remover, and then wash the sneakers completely by hand or in a washing machine. For washing in a machine, it is necessary to choose a delicate mode, in some models there is a special program for washing sports shoes. Spin - only at minimum speed.
  • For drying, do not leave running shoes on the battery or in direct sunlight. Intensive heat exposure is contraindicated for such products. Sneakers need to be dried by placing them on the grill or hanging them by the laces in the open air or in a dry room.

During thermal drying, the shoe loses its shape, the block can significantly decrease and deform.

Products from different materials

Different models of sneakers react differently to washing and contact with water. Accordingly, detergents, water temperature and method of washing must be suitable for a particular type of material.

One of the most unpretentious are fabric and rag sneakers. Usually they are made on rubber soles. Such shoes well tolerate both machine and hand wash.

If the sneakers are dark in color, you should pay special attention to rinsing to avoid whitish stains on the fabric after drying. If a machine washes the machine, the additional rinse mode should be set.

Leather sneakers can be washed only after you familiarize yourself with the tag on these shoes. The fact is that there are a lot of types of genuine leather. Some of them are very delicate and sensitive. So when cleaning and washing such shoes should strictly follow the instructions and warnings on the label.

If the tab is jammed and you cannot find out what leather your sneakers are made of, it is better to wash them only by hand at a temperature of 30-40 degrees non-aggressive detergents, such as laundry soap.

Mesh inserts on shoes lend themselves well to manual washing. If the product is white, you can use stain remover or bleach.

Nubuck shoes should only be cleaned by hand. Washing in a typewriter can forever ruin the shape of such shoes. The surface of the nubuck sneakers should be cleaned with a soft sponge or a cloth dampened in soapy water or a soft stain remover.

Velor sneakers do not tolerate any contact with water. Dry brushing is preferred for them. These shoes can be cleaned with a soft brush or suede cloth. Resourceful housewives noticed that it also removes dirt from velor shoes with a regular pencil eraser.

To avoid intense contamination of velor shoes, you should regularly treat it with special moisture-repellent protective compounds.

Winter sneakers with fur have a thick heavy sole that can damage the drum of the washing machine. Therefore, washing and cleaning for such products is suitable only by hand. Fur elements require particularly delicate, if possible dry cleaning. To do this, you need to fill the fur with starch and gently rub it into the pile along the entire length. After that, sweep the starch with a dry brush.

We take into account the color of the product

The choice of washing method and detergent also depends on the color of your sneakers.

Light sneakers tolerate the effects of stain removers and chlorine bleaches. However, these rather aggressive products should not be used too often, since they significantly affect the fibers of the material. A weak whitening property has a solution of citric acid. 40-50 grams of lemon powder should be diluted with 1 liter of water. The resulting composition can treat individual contaminated areas or soak shoes in it for 10-15 minutes. The citric acid solution also has a good refreshing effect, so that you can get rid of the unpleasant smell of sweat for a long time.

Sneakers made of fabric are well tolerated by almost all detergents. For colored fabric sneakers, it is preferable to use washing powder for colored materials with the function of preserving bright colors. You can also use gentle stain removers for colored fabrics.

Colored and dark sneakers should be washed separately from light shoes or other things. This will help to avoid unwanted coloring of light products during washing.

Tips & Tricks

The recommendations below will help you take better care of your shoes. and keep the neat appearance of your sneakers for a long time:

  • Fabric and rag sneakers often lose shape after washing and drying. To prevent this, fill your wet sneakers with dry wipes, newspaper clumps, and cotton towels. The drying process will be accelerated if the shoes are exposed to the open air.
  • Do not wash your sneakers of any type too often. Try to wash the entire shoe only when it is really necessary, for example, if the inside of the shoe is substantially contaminated and an unpleasant odor appears. Many types of contaminants are easily removed by partial curing, if you do not start them and take action as soon as possible, until the dirt is eaten into the material.
  • The maximum water temperature at which sneakers can be washed should not exceed 50 degrees. For delicate materials, this threshold is 30-40 degrees.
  • To speed up the drying of the washed pair, you can use a hairdryer in the cold air supply mode. Intensive thermal drying of shoes is strictly unacceptable.
  • To wash shoes in the washing machine, use a special laundry bag. You can replace it with an unnecessary old pillowcase.
  • Before washing, remove the laces from your shoes and remove the insoles if they are not glued. They are most conveniently washed separately by hand, after soaking for a short while in soapy or in a solution of washing powder.
  • Do not machine wash more than two pairs of shoes. This may result in damage or imbalance of the drum. Sneakers with thick and heavy soles are best not to be washed at all.
  • So that your shoes are not so often exposed to dirt and do not require frequent washing or cleaning, try to regularly treat them with a moisture-repellent protective composition. When choosing a composition, read the instructions to find the right tool for your sneakers.
