Highlighting is a special technique of coloring individual strands in lighter or contrasting shades. For short hair, the technique is considered to be a fairly easy and quick process, which allows you to change your usual hairstyle to a more spectacular, fashionable and stylish.
Features
Highlighting is considered to be a more gentle technique than full dyeing or brightening, since only part of the hair is dyed. Selected strands usually discolor and then tint. Thanks to this sequence of actions, it is possible to obtain a pure shade, create soft overflows on the hair and visually add a mop of splendor and density.
A feature of highlighting on short strands is the use of rather saturated shades of light, as well as dark and color tones, thanks to which you can create absolutely any image - from gentle and sweet to bold, bold and shocking. On short strands, highlighting is very simple to do - the paint is distributed along them quite quickly, does not drain and does not leave gaps or stains. Through the use of thin or wide locks, you can visually change the volume of the pile and focus on such interesting details as:
- asymmetric sections (bangs and strands);
- unusually treated neck area;
- shaved whiskey or, conversely, elongated.
Short hair usually has a denser structure without the formation of split ends, so the paint falls on them very evenly, and the color at the exit is obtained exactly as it was stated by the manufacturer on the package.
Varieties
Nowadays, there are at least several dozen varieties of highlighting, which differ from each other by the used technique, color palette and coloring features. For curls less than 15 cm long, the following options are most in demand.
- Peek-a-boo - this is highlighting, in which the strands are lightened, and then a lot of thin strands of a darker shade are added to the lower part of the bleached area. This design makes the hair more fluffy, and the color deep and saturated, professional masters pay special attention to the temporal region and bangs, due to this you can most advantageously emphasize all the advantages of appearance and visually smooth out the flaws.
- Two-tone - This is an option for dyeing short hair, in which the strands are painted in several shades, close and visually complementing each other. This type of coloring makes the image stylish, effective and gives the woman the very zest that attracts men's looks so much.
- Bright strands - Another fashionable solution. With this method of dyeing, several fairly wide strands are created that stand out clearly against the background of the total mass of hair. Usually curls are stained with natural paints.
- For straight short hair, preference should be given shallow frequent highlighting. This technique is considered the most time-consuming and complex, but as a result, soft overflows are formed on the strands that emphasize the geometry of the haircut. Staining of this type is best done in salon conditions, dexterity and speed are important here, with insufficient experience the result obtained can differ significantly from the expected one.
- To the owners asymmetric haircuts, you can focus on beautiful styling, coloring several wide locks, thereby enhancing the impression. In most cases, bangs or temporal areas are stained, therefore, such highlighting can be done independently without the use of assistants.
- For curly hair preference should be given to wide strands, since thin ones are simply lost in the total volume of hair.
Before you begin highlighting, it is very important to think carefully in advance which particular details of the haircut you want to emphasize and highlight. For example, you can draw attention to the bangs - in this case, the rest of the hair can be left in the native color, you can emphasize the temples and the crown, or you can highlight the whole mop - it all depends on your individual style and personal preferences.
Is it worth doing?
Highlighting has many advantages in comparison with traditional staining:
- the technique allows you to create soft shades on the hair from natural shades to lighter or more colored, as a result, the haircut looks more stylish, charm and originality are brought into the look;
- highlighting is considered a rather gentle technique, since in this case no more than half of the hair is dyed, in addition, the dyeing does not affect the root zone, which means that the hair follicles remain intact;
- as it grows on the strands strained, the roots are not as noticeable as on stained ones.
It should be noted that the application of paint during highlighting on shortened hair takes less time, and the composition is distributed on short strands more evenly than on long curls, as a result, the result of such dyeing is fully expected.
Since the short hairstyle needs frequent correction, the ends of the strands, injured due to exposure to brighteners, quickly cut off, respectively, the head looks more healthy and strong.
Highlighting on short hair looks very elegant and sophisticated, however, you should be careful when choosing a technique. TO for example, the fashionable nowadays rooster and ombre are not suitable here - the length does not allow creating smooth transitions from dark to light, and hair colored in this way looks untidy. However, balayazh and classic highlighting on short strands look very stylish and beautiful, so you do not need to abandon such staining options.
In addition, there are several contraindications to highlighting. So, if you previously did a perm, then after highlighting, the hair can become dry and very brittle. However, with short locks to wait for the curl to grow, you will have to be very short.
How to choose a shade?
In preparation for highlighting on short curls, you need to carefully approach the choice of shades. Be sure to keep in mind that for owners of a cold color type, cold tones (for example, ash, pearl or platinum) will be optimal, and for warm types, respectively, warm (honey, as well as wheat, cognac, caramel and beige). Depending on the selected palette, highlighting can be carried out in several variants.
- Californian - this method is optimal for chestnut and light brown strands, in this case shades of nude colors - amber, pearl and caramel usually look good.
- Venetian - Highlighting harmoniously on the hair of any color: from medium blond to black. Here, for coloring, shades of copper, purple, wine color or Marsala are selected.
- Voo - a similar method is good for owners of dark brown hair, while only the topmost locks are dyed and pure light tones are used for highlighting, creating a visual effect of a veil, as if covering a lock.
- Red - This is a fashionable and very effective highlighting that creates on the head the whole gamut of overflows of brown, as well as red and red shades.
- Color - this coloring is suitable for brave and daring girls who like to attract everyone's attention. Typically, the procedure is carried out using unconventional tones in order to emphasize the geometry of the haircut. On dark curls, as a rule, strands of red, purple or blue are decorated, and on light, pink, blue and even lilac are preferred.
The choice of a suitable shade of hair depends on the characteristics of the haircut, the initial tone of the curls, the texture of the hair and the color type of the woman.
Staining technique
Short hair dyeing does not require much work experience. Any woman can cope with dyeing even at home, especially when it comes to ultra-short haircuts, but for strands up to the neck it is better to find an assistant who can properly dye her hair at the back of her head.
For highlighting you will need:
- clarifier;
- base paint;
- conditioner balm.
It is also necessary to prepare a bowl for diluting the emulsion, a comb with a separator, foil or silicone hat, a cape and a brush. First you need to put a special cap on the hair for highlighting and, using a knitting needle, divider or hook, pull out the required number of thin strands. A clarifier is smeared on them, they stand for 15-25 minutes, then they are thoroughly washed off and covered with the paint of the main color.
If you have some highlighting skills, you can use the usual foil. To do this, select the desired strand from the total mass of hair, lay a square of foil under it, distribute the coloring paste and bend it on the sides, and then in half. Highlighted hair is washed with shampoo for colored hair and certainly apply conditioner balm.
Interesting examples
Highlighting for short hair has not gone out of fashion for more than 10 years, however, dyeing techniques are changing every season - from year to year new methods of applying paint and beautiful color solutions are added.When highlighting only appeared, women simply lightened the locks - painted with “feathers”, but today stylists offer many other, more modern techniques.
California highlighting
This technique allows you to create a play of light on your head, imitating the effect of hair burned out in the sun. On short strands, highlighting is traditionally performed using salmon and bronze flowers. Ladies with light blond curls can come in light ash or pearl tones.
American highlighting
This is a similar technique, which involves the application of 3-15 shades, related to each other, usually from a common color scheme. Unlike California staining, brighter colors are relevant here, reds are most popular - this highlighting looks very impressive on brunettes.
Balayazh
This highlighting is most harmonious on short-haired owners of dark strands. It creates bright highlights, reminiscent of sun bunnies on curls.
Magic contrast
This is an option for courageous girls who prefer the contrast between native strands and a shade of highlighted areas. Looks like coloring is excellent regardless of the haircut.
Crazy Color
The most daring highlighting, which is based on the use of several bright, contrasting shades. Colored accents will not allow their owner to get lost in the general crowd and will invariably attract the enthusiastic looks of others.
