Maine Coon is a very interesting breed of cats. This name they received in honor of the state of Maine. Cats grow quite large, have a long coat. By nature, these animals are kind and playful, and they also have a good memory. Their amazing coat helps them withstand temperature changes, in addition, they have hunting qualities, obedient character, and are not afraid of danger.

This breed of cats is becoming more and more popular every year. They start not only for themselves, but also for exhibitions. But in order for the animal to always have a decent appearance, it needs to be trimmed.

Why is this needed?

Some Maine Coon owners are categorically against haircuts, while others can not imagine their life without such procedures. Consider both sides of the issue in more detail.

  • In the hot season, the animal will be easier. Indeed, at such moments he will feel better. But there will be no protection from various external factors (sun, draft).
  • The molting period will be easier. But this process also depends on completely different indicators, such as nutrition, stress.
  • When an animal licks its hair, it can enter the digestive tract, and eventually cause nausea. In order not to bring to this, you need to constantly comb out the wool. Or add a special paste to remove lumps in a natural way.
  • The presence of braids is a reason for a haircut. But still, this can be avoided. The main thing is to regularly wash and comb the pet.
  • If we talk about the beautiful appearance, then everyone has their own opinion. Most owners like the natural beauty of a cat more.

Is a haircut dangerous?

This breed of cats has a two-layer coat. And she is incredibly important to them. During the haircut, the hair loses the necessary qualities.

  • Thermoregulation. It maintains the desired body temperature - this is due to the air gap.
  • Navigation. On the top of the coat are tactile long and stiff hairs. They exist to help the animal navigate in space at night.
  • Softness. After the haircut, the amount of wool and tangles increases.

In addition, after cutting, some cats do not feel too well. Sleepy state may occur due to loss of orientation. The animal is confused, as a result of which it hides.

Nevertheless, there are situations when the owner starts the care. A lot of warlocks appear throughout the coat, which interfere with normal life. And in this case, you can not do without a haircut.

If the pet lives in a small apartment, during the molting period, the fallen wool will be wherever possible. Of course, getting rid of this problem will not work out completely, but it is possible to partially reduce the number of hairs.

Catters, who have been dealing with this breed for many years, know that if the animal is completely healthy, then no haircuts will harm him.

This breed of cats is very difficult to wet to the skin, as they have a long and thick coat. They also have an outer hair that repels water, thereby protecting them. Most representatives have tassels on their ears, and if not, it's okay. A fur collar is located on the neck. The tail is also very thick and fluffy.

According to the standard, it is not worth working with scissors before the exhibition. It is only necessary to wash, dry and comb out the coat thoroughly.

Preparation for the process

Specialists who have long bred Maine Coons and look after them always have a few tricks for beginners in their arsenal.

  • Almost all representatives of this breed are well related to water. There are those who are very fond of splashing in her, but there are also those who are afraid of her.
  • Before starting to wash, it is worth putting a towel or rag on the bottom of the bathtub or basin. This is done so that the animal is not frightened, and the paws do not slip. And only then they collect a small amount of water.
  • One of the tricks is this: first, mix special shampoo with water in the palm of your hand. In this way it will be easier to apply and distribute. Remember that this breed has a core hair, and it is difficult to wet the coat because of it. It is also very important that water does not get into the eyes and ears.
  • There are three types of shampoo that are used: for deep cleaning, maintaining color and texture. Apply them in the same sequence. In addition, you can use special massage rubber gloves, they are easy to buy at any pet store.
  • It is also necessary to apply a balm so that the scales on the hairs are closed, and the coat is smooth and shiny. All hair care products are selected individually for each animal. They will not change the structure of the hair, but will help to make your pet well-groomed. However, balm should not be used before the exhibition. It will cause the coat to be slightly oily to the touch.
  • In order for the haircut to be good and the shape to remain original, the coat must be thoroughly dried. This can be done with a towel or hairdryer, but at minimum speed. Then you need to thoroughly comb all the hair and remove the tangles. It is recommended to do this along the hairline. Only after that you can start the haircut itself.

How to do it right?

There are two types of cat haircuts: home and exhibition. Of course, the first option is interesting to almost everyone. And one of the most common haircuts in this case is it's a “french lion”. Wool is removed throughout the body, leaving only a couple of millimeters. The paws are trimmed to the joints. A small part of the hair is left on the tail, and on the head the hair is gently leveled.

If you decide to make a haircut yourself, it is better to enlist someone's help.It is worth preparing hydrogen peroxide and cotton pads in advance if you suddenly injure an animal. You will also need a regular clipper or cat trimmer, and scissors.

During the process, one person holds the cat's paws or simply distracts the animal, and the second shears. You need to start from the back, moving to the sides. Feet can be trimmed with scissors. This should be done as carefully as possible. After the haircut procedure is completed, the animal is wiped with a damp towel or washed to remove small hairs.

If several days have passed after the haircut, and the animal behaves strangely, then you should contact a veterinary clinic.

In that case, if you decide to go to the specialists, then you don’t need to worry about anything - the masters will choose the type of haircut and find a common language with the animal. But they can offer a haircut under anesthesia. As a rule, you should not agree to this - the haircut is completely painless, but the harm from anesthesia, especially the frequent ones, is obvious.

If the animal does not want to contact at all, just do not drive it into the salon, and take care of the hair yourself.

Aftercare

This procedure is recommended to be carried out once or twice a year. In the hot season, it will help regulate heat transfer. In addition, if your pet walks on the street, then he is able to catch ticks. A haircut will help get rid of these harmful parasites.

The following items are used to care for wool:

  • comb with thinned cloves;
  • comb with frequent cloves;
  • comb with natural bristles;
  • scallop with frequent and small denticles.

Each tool must be metal. Combs should be taken with rounded tips so as not to injure the animal. They must be used in the order in which they go on the list. In the event that you need to quickly comb your pet, then you should use a comb with different lengths of cloves.

During molting, a slicker is also needed. It needs to be used very carefully, since not all animals love this device. This procedure must be performed a couple of times a week. And all the wool that fell out must be removed in a timely manner. Shedding happens only a couple of times a year, and does not create any serious problems.

All cats need constant attention and careful care. And each owner decides for himself whether to cut or not to cut his pet. But everyone is required to keep it clean, cut its nails, pay attention to the ears, eyes and coat. Maine Coon wool should always be monitored, both when it is overgrown and when sheared.
