The Ottoman is one of the symbols of elegance and style. However, it would be completely wrong to call it non-modern, because today's sofas very often represent nothing more than a sofa and an ottoman, forming folded corner upholstered furniture, and when dismantled, a comfortable berth.

What is an ottoman?

An ottoman is called a pouf or couch, which can both join the sofa, and be at a certain distance from it, performing the functions of a place for sitting, footrest and even a small table in some models. It can have both a contrasting design and represent a single color and style composition with upholstered furniture.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any other piece of furniture, sofas with ottomans have advantages and disadvantages. The benefits include the following:

  • models are stylish, multifunctional and very comfortable;
  • transform into a sleeping place, which in size can be compared with a double bed;
  • a huge selection of models in various colors and styles.

    The disadvantages of the design include:

    • most products are expensive;
    • in order to comfortably place such a sofa, you need a lot of free space, so it will be difficult to put it in a room with a small area and a narrow doorway.

    Species overview

    Ottoman sofas can have several designs.

    • Folding. These are transformer models that, when assembled, look compact and mobile, and when disassembled, they look like a full and comfortable berth. Retractable and folding mechanisms for transforming sofas are different - it is an “accordion”, “dolphin”, “tick-tak”, “eurobook” and “sedaflex”.
    • Folding constructions can only be used as sofas. They are placed most often in the living room or large spacious hallway.
    • Modular. These models are, in fact, a constructor; their parts can be rearranged at will. As a rule, each module has several fixtures, and furniture can be assembled in different ways depending on the desire of the owner.

    Folding

    There are several types of folding sofas. They differ in mechanisms and ways of folding. For instance, in the euronew mechanism everything works very simply - the seat moves forward, and the backrest is lowered to the seat.

    In order to make it more convenient, it is better to equip the retractable part with wheels. If they are not, you can damage the floor covering.

    Tick-tock is one of the varieties of the Eurobook. The folding design consists of a metal frame and additional springs.

    The berth is obtained as follows: the seat extends up and forward, then lowers in a semicircle. The backrest takes the seat. Due to the presence of springs, no wheels are required, it is impossible to damage the floor covering with such a mechanism. That is why sofas with this mechanism are more expensive.

    "Dolphin" - on the contrary, the mechanism is old. The transformation of the sofa into a bed occurs in a two-stage way. First, an extra berth is pulled out from under the seat, and then by means of hinges or other methods of gripping it is raised to the same level as the seat. There are either no storage boxes for sleeping accessories in such sofas, or they are in the ottoman.

    The simplest mechanism, but requiring sufficient strength from a person, is the “accordion”. It is possible to decompose such a sofa by making only one movement, but quite a lot of force needs to be applied to this movement. There are no spring blocks in such sofas, “accordions” are incompatible with them.

    Regarding the mechanism Sedaflex, this is not an everyday option. For daily use, it is inconvenient, and it becomes unusable from frequent collection and analysis. The layout is carried out in several stages:

    • first you need to remove the pillows that make up the seat;
    • pull the seat up and forward, put on the support;
    • decompose the berth completely, spreading the supports.

    Non folding

    These models do not form a berth and are not transformed into anything. They always represent a sofa and an ottoman, which is either part of the structure, or a detached and attached part, if necessary. But they can have the most original forms due to the back and armrests.

    Modular

    Modular models can be rigid or loose in design. Modules are elements that are interconnected conditionally - with Velcro or straps. You can rearrange the modules at least daily, collecting them in different ways. Many companies produce modules that are suitable for various sofas; they can be purchased separately if needed.

    The modules can be assembled in a U-shaped sofa, island, as well as in the more familiar corner and straight models.

    Materials

    The Ottoman consists of elements such as frame, filler, upholstery and legs. The frame can be wooden, plywood, timber and made of chipboard. It is better to choose a model for the production of which were used either high-quality wooden beam, or plywood. In this case, the risk of deformation is much less.

    As a filler use sintepuh or hollofayber. They are hypoallergenic, do not lose shape, are not affected by dust mites. Also, fillers can be replaced with spring blocks.

    Upholstered sofas with ottomans or leather (both natural and eco), or textiles. Textiles are more environmentally friendly, but wear out faster. As textile upholstery can be used jacquard, chenille, flock.

    The legs must be made of strong and stable material that can withstand heavy weight. It is either steel or solid wood.

    Shapes and sizes

    The standard size of the corner sofa is quite suitable for the conditions of a small apartment. The minimum size may be 2-2.1 m (we are talking about the length of the central part). Kitchen models can be even more compact. As for non-standard solutions, they can be either large or (at the request of the customer) very large, with a retractable back or folding structure, or even composed of a large number of pouf-modules.

    Color palette

    Most often, upholstered furniture is the main emphasis in the room, including color. It can be matched to the tone of other objects in the interior or, conversely, contrasted with them. The most popular neutral light shades are gray, beige, milky. They look good in any style, especially in modern urban.

    White color upholstered furniture, despite its soiled and impractical, retains a leading position in demand and popularity. This is due, firstly, to being white, even the most dimensional furniture looks light, and secondly, white furniture gives the room a feeling of cleanliness, freshness (provided, of course, that the white upholstery remains white and is cleaned timely) .

    Shades gray color They are also very popular and can be used in almost any interior. The gray scale is quite extensive and includes both light colors - ash, silver, and dark - wet asphalt, mouse, etc. For interior decoration in a modern style, such shades are perfectly suited.

    Light sofas look good indoors with dark floor and walls. They will create the necessary color accent and give lightness to the interior. It may be interesting to purchase a sofa and curtains of one extraordinary color, for example, mint, turquoise, lemon or pistachio. Then you can get a modern interior in a Mediterranean style.

    Natural tones the interior is also unusually in demand. Beige, milk or ivory - shades that are appropriate in the room for any purpose.

    Criterias of choice

    When choosing upholstered furniture, you must definitely consider its size. Sofas with an ottoman are very overall, they need a large space so that they look harmonious. The standard rule states that the sofa should not be longer than two-thirds of the wall along which it is located. Based on the fact that the average length of the sofa is 2 meters, the wall must be at least 3. The width and depth of the product must also be taken into account.

    Be sure to consider what other furniture will stand in the room. Since sofas with ottomans are dimensional, the abundance of objects in the same room with them can create the impression of clutter.

    It is necessary to take into account what the sofa is purchased for. If you need a comfortable berth, it makes sense to purchase a folding model. If you have a bed, but you are looking for a comfortable place to relax, then you can stay on the original modular or non-folding model. In a small room, a product with an ottoman that is separate from the general design may not look very harmonious, then it is better to choose an angular model that is not equipped with a folding mechanism.

    The less free space, the smoother the product lines and the more rounded corners should be.

    If you plan to constantly use the sofa, choose the option whose upholstery is easy to clean and maintains an attractive appearance for a long time.

    Where to put?

    A sofa with an ottoman will look good in the living room, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom. True, for the latter it is better to choose a transformer model with a roll-out or sliding design so that it can turn into a berth. Folding sofas also look good in studio apartments or in one-room apartments, where the living room and bedroom are combined.

    Non-folding sofas of unusual shape are comfortable and beautiful, good in living rooms, especially those with a large area. It is good to set the Ottoman separately as an independent place for sitting or footrest.

    Modular options are most suitable for those who like to make changes to the interior. You can rearrange the poufs and “spare parts” of the sofa in different ways, achieving new solutions each time. The more modules the product contains, the more options for rearranging them.

    Examples in the interior

    Bright color and impressive dimensions are the trump cards of this sofa, of course, which is the central subject of the interior of the room.

    The luxurious sofa, upholstered in black leather, is also practical - it has a lot of space for storing bedding.

    The upholstery neutral color and vibrant pillow-shaped accents are a great combination.

    The ottoman in contrasting colors harmonizes with the pillows on the sofa.
