A sofa is an integral part of any interior, both home and office. One of the most common types of such upholstered furniture is a folding sofa book. They are reliable and durable. But sometimes they break. What to do in such cases? Is it possible to repair the sofa yourself? You will find the answers to these questions in the article.
Transformation mechanism device
At a sofa with a folding mechanism "Book" many positive qualities:
- simplicity and reliability;
- durability;
- affordability;
- ease of transformation;
- under the sofa there is a box in which you can put a change of linen;
- Suitable for installation even in small apartments.
Of course, there are also disadvantages:
- even when unfolded, the berth is not very wide;
- when installing the sofa, you need to leave a small gap between the piece of furniture and the wall.
How is a sofa book arranged? The design consists of several parts: the base, made in the form of a box, and two soft panels interconnected by a transformation mechanism. The frame of the base and panels can be made of wood or metal. The mechanism "book" and fixing accessories are always made of high-strength alloys. "Book" provides two positions - a sofa for sitting and a berth.
Do-it-yourself causes and troubleshooting
The most frequent breakdowns of a folding sofa book are such.
- Piece of furniture not folding or folding generally or requires more effort than before. The reason is that the transformation mechanism is stuck or broken.
- Creaks when changing body position.
- Uncomfortable to sit or lie down - uneven sofa relief.
- The seat panel fails. The root cause may be deformation of the lamellas. Replacing damaged parts can help.
- Surface damage - scratches, chips of frame parts, damaged cover, etc. Damage to wooden parts can be sanded and varnished. The cover is easier to replace, especially in the case of stubborn stains.
The first type of malfunction (difficulties with transformation) requires checking and / or replacing the sofa folding mechanism itself. You can repair such a breakdown yourself, without involving third-party specialists - of course, if you are even a little versed in furniture repair. First, carefully disassemble the sofa and Inspect the mechanism for damage. If there are none, and the sofa just seizes, lubricate all components with high-quality engine oil. or other lubricant. Check his work. If everything is in order, the repair is almost complete - you just have to assemble the furniture.
If the problem persists, unmount the mechanism.
Carefully inspect it and purchase a similar one in the store of household goods (you can take it with you as a sample, so as not to be mistaken). Then screw it (of course, new) to the body and panels of the sofa. Assemble the furniture. Test the operation of the mechanism - fold-out the sofa. If everything is OK, lubricate the metal parts with engine oil. (just a few drops to the junction of the elements).
If you are inconvenient uneven relief of the sofa, you will have to disassemble the deformed panel and try to adjust the springs. An increase in soft padding above them may also help. But remember that, most likely, soon you will have to carry out a similar procedure again. It is easier to replace the entire spring unit.
What to do if it creaks when unfolded?
If during the operation of furniture unpleasant sounds began to appear, in particular, a creak, do not rush to throw it away and buy a new one. This problem can be solved independently. First you need to determine which part of the structure creaks. In the case of a wooden spring sofa, several situations are possible - when the body makes sounds when the load is increased; when metal springs become the cause of a creak; and when an unpleasant sound is a consequence of the looseness of the fasteners. Sometimes a creak may issue a transformation mechanism. In this case, usually enough lubrication of its nodes.
If the cause of the squeak is loose bolts, you just need to tighten them by twisting them all the way.
In the case when the creak is published by wooden parts, there may also be several reasons.
- Damage to one of the main structural beams. If this is a small crack, screw a metal plate to the beam to reinforce it.
If there is a lot of damage or the crack is deep and long, you will have to replace the deformed beam.
- Deformation of wooden parts and the appearance of gaps between them. The reason may be the swelling of the wood from moisture and subsequent drying. Regular PVA glue will help you fix such problems. Put it into a medical syringe and fill in the gaps found. The glue should dry completely, do not touch the sofa until this point.
- The plywood, from which the bottom of the sofa is usually made, began to bend and creak. Try reinforcing the bottom with additional cross bars. This will help reduce the load on plywood and its more even distribution.
The hardest thing is to eliminate the creak when the spring block is to blame for it. If finances allow the best option would be to replace the entire creaking spring unit.
Do not replace individual deformed parts - you will spend too much time and effort, and the result will be minimal.
If funds are limited, try stuffing springs with foam rubber - for a while the creak will subside.
