It is hard to imagine a living room without a cozy sofa. Folding double models are purchased not only for staying guests. In small apartments, they are used at night as a bed, and during the day - for a comfortable stay.
Features, advantages and disadvantages
A feature of the 2-seater sofa is compact during the day and capacity at night. Counting on the daily transformation of the sofa, you should choose a high-quality model with a reliable folding mechanism, a strong frame, with a filler that will not sag in six months.
The advantages of a folding sofa are obvious:
- functional day and night, working out your resource at 100%;
- variety of folding mechanisms allows you to choose the one that unfolds quickly and simply, and also suits the environment (understands forward or to the side);
- large selection of models satisfy any taste, you can pick up for any style of interior;
- product with orthopedic mattress will contribute to a healthy and sound sleep;
- Availability linen box solve the problem with bedding when you need to fold the sofa.
A sofa with a double bed can have different sizes and can be in any room, even in the kitchen.
Some consider the minus the fact that a double frame and mattress can increase the cost of the product, but if you refuse to buy a separate bed, it will turn out even cheaper.
Varieties
A large selection of folding double sofas makes classification difficult. Let's try to distribute them, guided by two main criteria: the form (design features) and the type of folding mechanism.
In shape
Often, free space affects the choice of the shape of the sofa, for example, an angular model ideally occupies a corner, you can put a radius product in the center of a large room, and a straight design is suitable for any wall.
In form and design features, sofas come in several forms.
- Direct. A sofa of any size, with or without armrests, which has a classic straight line of the frame, is called straight. In most cases, it is installed against the wall, and only island models can be in the center of the room.
- Angular. The model is similar in shape to the letter “G”, forms a left-side or right-side angle, which is taken into account at the time of purchase. A large section of the sofa is involved in the transformation. The unfolded product is endowed with a spacious berth, which can accommodate the whole family.
- U-shaped. Large design with two angles, in appearance resembles the letter "P". It is installed in the center of a large room to form a recreation area. The folding sofa can accommodate a large number of guests during the day and at least two at night.
- Island. A product of any shape with equal upholstery on all sides, designed to be in the center of the room, is called an island.
- Modular. The sofa consists of different sections and is formed at the discretion of the owner. A sliding, with two places, usually a large module, but sometimes a berth is set due to the compiled sections.
- Radius. A semicircular structure, which during unfolding forms a circle that can take two people to sleep.
According to the transformation mechanism
Looking at a compact sofa with only two seats, you cannot say that it can turn into a double bed. The secret lies in the method of transformation: the berth is laid forward and becomes 3 times more than the seat.
Consider the most common folding mechanisms.
- "Accordion". To unfold the product, just slightly raise the seat and pull forward. The process is easy, effortless. A sofa with an accordion system is designed for daily use, as it is endowed with a metal frame and a reliable mechanism.
- "Book". Most Soviet sofas were equipped with this mechanism. To expand the model, you need to lift and push the back back. A gap is provided between the sofa and the wall, otherwise the transformation will not occur.
- Eurobook. The modern improved mechanism of the "book". The seat needs to be pulled over without much effort, and the back itself will occupy the resulting space. The mattress is almost seamless.
- "Pantograph". The sofa unfolds without the participation of rollers, which preserves the floor covering. The seat seems to "step" out of the sofa, and the back rests in its place.
Dimensions
Before making a purchase, you should measure the place where the sofa will stand and take into account the way it is transformed (forward or to the side). Double products do not have to be overall, have a two-meter length. They can be endowed with miniature dimensions, about a meter and a half in length, but thanks to folding forward to form a full-fledged double seat.
The standard straight model is 180-210 cm long and 80-90 cm deep. The width of the berth when unfolded will be 160-180 cm.
A compact sofa that can transform into a double seat should have a length (folded) of at least 140-160 cm.
Frame, upholstery and filler materials
The sofa consists of a base (frame), a sliding mechanism, a filler and upholstery. All components are made from different materials, and they need to be considered separately.
Frame
From the strength of the frame depends on the load that it can withstand, as well as the durability of the product.
Strong is considered a base made from hardwood - oak, beech, walnut, plum.
For the operation of some transforming mechanisms the frame is reinforced with metal. A solid base significantly affects the quality of the sofa, but at the same time increases the cost of it.
To make the price lower, use less durable wood - solid pine. The frame will be even cheaper from pressed multilayer plywood, MDF or particleboard. All these materials not only reduce the cost of production, but also reduce the terms of use of the product itself.
Filler
The strength of the sofa also depends on the quality of the filler - a too soft product will not last long, the seat will eventually fail. Medium-hard polyurethane foam and hard durafil are considered popular materials.
Hollofiber refers to soft, airy fillers that provide a comfortable seat, but it is used in combination with dense materials, choosing the “golden mean” of the degree of rigidity, thereby lengthening the life of the sofa.
Expensive and durable latex fillers. We can not say about the spring block, especially with independent springs. They are used to create orthopedic mattresses.
The most inappropriate material for a sofa is foam rubber it quickly sags and is slightly toxic, although it significantly reduces the cost of the product.
Upholstery
For kitchen sofas, you need to choose faux leather or fabrics with special impregnation that repel water and dirt.
But they have a small minus - they "do not breathe."
Therefore, for products intended for the living room, bedroom or children's room, water-repellent properties can be neglected. In these rooms it is better to use environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic and tactilely pleasant fabrics, such as jacquard, tapestry, matting, velveteen, flock.
Colors
The color of the sofa should coincide with the general background of the environment, unless, of course, they do not plan to make it accent in the interior. The furniture industry produces products of any color without restrictions - from calm gray to catchy scarlet. To verify this, just look at a few examples:
- noble gray shades in the black outline of the frame;
- accent sofa with rich purple;
- patchwork technique;
- sofa for a green interior;
- cheerful shades of upholstered furniture.
Manufacturers
On the Russian furniture market you can find products of both domestic and foreign manufacturers. Quality depends on the brand, and demand depends on quality. The most popular include several companies.
- Rival. The Russian manufacturer of upholstered furniture, in its assortment a large number of diverse models equipped with covers.
- "Lagoon". A well-known Belarusian company has established itself as a supplier of high-quality sofas.
- Alchymia. Elite products from the Italian manufacturer. Amazingly beautiful but austere luxury.
- Bruehl. The German company produces several designer rulers of sofas with the transformation of a double seat.
Selection tips
Going to buy a sofa, you need to know the size of the allocated space in the room - the model parameters will depend on this. And also it should be decided whether the product is needed - left-side or right-sided, in which direction it will be laid out.
The cost of a sofa depends on the brand and the materials of which it consists.
If the possibilities are unlimited, it is better to purchase a product with a frame made of solid wood, with latex filler or a spring block (independent springs).
The fabric is chosen to taste and combined with the decor. It is better to give preference to reliable, but simple transforming mechanisms, such as “accordion”, “eurobook”, “pantograph”, “dolphin”.
