Sofa is a comfortable and beautiful piece of furniture. A comfortable stay on it depends on the seat (pillows), which have different fillers, respectively, different strength, durability and orthopedic properties. The article will discuss the varieties of pillows and the choice of a sofa with the best soft blocks.

Features, advantages and disadvantages

Sofa is indispensable for small apartments. It does not take up much space, but it has every opportunity to provide a comfortable day's rest and a healthy night's sleep, it all depends on the pillow filler. And they come in different densities: soft, medium and hard. When choosing, personal preferences and health status are taken into account. Doctors recommend:

  • for pain in the upper back, choose hard pillows;
  • with back pain it’s easier to lie on soft blocks;
  • children, in order to properly form the spine, on the contrary, soft pillows are not needed, medium hardness is suitable for them;
  • it will be easier for older people to sleep on hard pillows or medium density.

Pillows for a sofa can be divided into two types: spring and springless. Each group has its own advantages and disadvantages. Spring blocks, in turn, are divided into dependent and independent. Pillows with dependent springs belong to the Bonnel version - in this product all springs are interconnected. This is a cheaper and less practical model. Squeezing the springs in one place, they pull others along with them. For independent pillows, each spring is placed in a case and secured separately. Squeezing the seat of the sofa occurs in one particular place and does not affect the other springs.

The advantages of pillows with independent spring blocks include the following points:

  • they have high orthopedic characteristics;
  • durable, seats do not sag for many years;
  • the berth withstands a load of up to 250 kg.

Spring pillows also have their drawbacks, which you should be aware of before deciding to purchase them:

  • their weight exceeds springless products, which makes transportation difficult;
  • many do not like the presence of metal in the mattress: static electricity appears because of it, and violation of the anticorrosion layer can lead to rust, which is impregnated to the surface;
  • over time, a characteristic creaking of the springs appears.

Springless mattresses are also of different types. Dear ones have a “memory" and orthopedic properties, cheap ones can cause inconvenience and wear out quickly. Consider the advantages of pillows with fillers without springs related to products of good quality:

  • they are light;
  • strong and reliable;
  • there are no springs in them, which means there is nothing to break and creak;
  • depending on the filler may have orthopedic properties;
  • have a long service life;
  • withstand loads up to 150 kg.

The disadvantages include their cost, which is higher than that of a spring unit with similar characteristics. The remaining disadvantages depend on the particular filler, but more on this below.

Varieties

As already noted, the pillows are divided according to the degree of rigidity and the presence of springs. A great influence on the strength, reliability, durability and convenience of a berth has the quality and composition of the filler. Pillows are divided into the following types.

Bonnel (dependent spring unit)

Sleeping places with dependent spring blocks are in demand due to their low cost. The sofa can withstand loads up to 110 kg. The springs are firmly fixed, so the pillows will last more than one year before their characteristic creak occurs. Over time, the sleeping place is deformed, but before that, it will serve faithfully for many years.

Unfortunately, such mattresses do not have orthopedic properties and cannot withstand point loads, for example, they can be damaged by strong jumps.

Pocket Spring (independent spring unit)

Each spring has a high degree of elasticity, providing a stable orthopedic effect. Pillows repeat the shape of the body and provide an opportunity to completely relax the muscles and fully relax. The disadvantage of this type is the high cost and poor resistance to point impacts.

Polyurethane foam (PPU)

A more familiar name is foam rubber (compacted fine-meshed foam). Environmentally friendly and safe material. The softness and rigidity in it are perfectly balanced. PPU has excellent breathability, elasticity, it holds its shape perfectly. On technical characteristics it is not inferior to independent spring blocks, although it has a lower cost.

Latex

This filler is artificial and natural. Natural material is produced from the juice of hevea tree by the foaming method. The product belongs to the elite species, it is expensive. In the pillows there is a good air circulation, they are resilient and elastic, have a “memory", repeat the shape of the body. Orthopedic properties of latex fillers are high. Insects do not start in such products; they are hypoallergenic.

As artificial latex, a highly elastic type of polyurethane foam is used. According to its characteristics, it is close to natural raw materials.

Sisal

Filler medium hardness, made from cactus coir. It has good breathability, does not retain moisture, neutralizes unpleasant odors. In pillows, agave leaves are combined with latex, which allows to achieve stable elasticity of the product. To obtain perfect stiffness, sisal is combined with holofiber.

Dimensions

The size of a sofa bed depends on the dimensions of its frame. Comfortable lengths for healthy sleep are mattresses that are 20 cm higher than a person’s height. Large models have parameters of 90x200 cm or 90x205 cm, the most compact - 60x160 cm. Some products are endowed with a transformation function. When unfolded, pillows can have parameters of 120x180 cm, 160x190 cm or 180x200 cm.

Upholstery Materials

The strength and durability of pillows is affected not only by the quality of the filler, but also by the upholstery material. Modern industry produces a wide range of products. If the sofa will be in the kitchen, you can pick up waterproof and dirt-repellent fabrics.

For children's rooms, it is better to choose natural materials that do not carry dangerous allergens in the composition of fibers and dyes.

Velours

The material is similar to velvet, but with a shorter pile. The fabric is soft, breathable, holds its shape well, has a beautiful appearance. The disadvantages include the possibility of abrasion, as well as a tendency to accumulate dust.

Jacquard

Durable reliable material with a beautiful pattern. It is produced in a matte and glossy version, it is suitable for upholstered furniture in living rooms. It looks great and lasts a long time. The disadvantages of this material include the need for dry cleaning.

Scotchguard

A kind of jacquard with special impregnations, thanks to which the fabric does not accumulate water, dust and dirt. It has special strength and beautiful appearance.

Shenill

Soft, practical material with a characteristic fiber structure. The fabric is resistant to damage, tactilely pleasant, does not absorb odors, and is durable. But puffs from animal claws can remain on such a fabric, in addition, a product from it is not cheap.

Flock

The most practical material, strong and durable, created by modern technologies. The fabric repels moisture and dust, but absorbs odors well, so it is not suitable for staying in the kitchen.

Selection tips

It is important to know whether pillows are selected for a new product or for furniture of an old type, still Soviet-made. When buying, you need to pay attention to the following points.

  • A sofa designed for daily sleep should have comfortable high pillows of medium hardness with orthopedic characteristics. If your budget allows, you can purchase blocks with independent springs or on a latex basis.
  • For daytime use of the sofa, you can not overpay, for this pillows with polyurethane foam are quite suitable. It is an inexpensive filler of good quality with moderate rigidity.
  • In children's rooms it is better to choose natural fillers - latex, coconut coir, as well as natural upholstery made of cotton-based fabric with 5-6 pillows.
  • For the kitchen and hallway it is better to prefer upholstery that repels water and dirt. Fillers with spring blocks are undesirable for these rooms.

The size and shape of the sofa can be any, but it is the pillows that are responsible for a comfortable stay on it.
