Upholstered furniture in a modern interior deserves special attention. It should be not only comfortable, but also meet all the requirements of the situation, as well as be multifunctional. Due to the limited space in modern apartments folding sofas and armchairs are very appreciated. We will talk about what options of modern kits exist and how to arrange them correctly in today's article.

Kit Features

At the end of the last century, the furniture industry in our country underwent dramatic changes. New design options for residential and non-residential premises began to appear. Products on a metal frame, rocking chairs and much more began to be sold. Manufacturing techniques and materials have also undergone significant changes. Speaking of upholstered furniture, the first thing that comes to mind is a sofa and armchairs.

In most cases, they are placed in a recreation area. If the size of the room allows, then the set of chairs can exceed 2 copies. On this design, you can spend time after a hard day's work. The right set of furniture will comfortably accommodate the whole family.

An important condition when choosing a kit is style that is used in this room. Choosing the right combination of style, you can achieve harmony and comfort in a particular room. Mostly used are sets of 3 items (1 sofa and two armchairs, 2 sofas and 1 armchair, 2 armchairs and a bed). If the room is small and does not allow you to install 3 items in it, then you can use 2 items to choose from (sofa and chair, bed and chair).

Buying a ready-made furniture set is the easiest, but not for all styles such a combination is suitable. A striking example of this style is the loft. In connection with its origin, it does not mean ready-made kits.

Designers have brought out several win-win combinations that would be appropriate in most rooms:

  • a combination of plain and ornamental elements;
  • combination of neutral color with bright;
  • combination of different neutral colors;
  • a combination of items of unusual colors;
  • combination of classic elements with other styles;
  • a combination of different materials and textures.

Types of designs

The bedrooms and living rooms are equipped with a large number of upholstered furniture. Among them may be not only standard sofas and armchairs, but also other options of elements familiar to us. For example, an ottoman is able to successfully fulfill the role of a berth.

Let us consider in more detail the types and types of designs of upholstered furniture.

  • Folding sofas. For lack of a large area, they are able to turn into a full-fledged sleeping place, thereby saving significant space in the room. This is a great solution for a combined living room with a bedroom. As for comfort in a dream, many modern models of folding sofas are not much inferior to beds. Among them you can find many models with various mechanisms ("book", "accordion", "eurobook", "pantograph", "dolphin"). It should be noted that folding sofas on legs are not the best choice for daily folding, it is much better and more convenient to choose a model on wheels.
  • Corner sofas. A very popular piece of furniture in a modern style. Thanks to a large palette of colors and materials, corner sofas successfully fit not only into the kitchen interior, but also into the living room. They are also equipped with folding mechanisms for transformation into a full double bed. Such a sofa can help out the owners when placing late guests for the night. Some models with large armrests can be equipped with a minibar in them. Such an interior item will always be in the spotlight and is very much in demand in the family. Behind it you can watch the game of your favorite sports team in the company of friends, where the minibar will be a great addition, relax after a working day, and after laying it out, sleep well.
  • Direct sofas can fit into any interior, if only the size of the room allowed. They can be equipped with different types of armrests, both multilevel, folding, and without them at all.
  • Transformers - These are modern sofas with a metal frame in the places of transformation. They come with different adjustable armrests, can be adjusted for the position of the back and, as a rule, they are all folding.
  • Chair bed. This may be another option for a spare berth. Most often they use the same mechanisms as in folding sofas, so it will be quite comfortable to sleep on such an armchair.
  • Garden furniture. More recently, I moved from gardens to the interiors of apartments and houses. Among it, the most popular are interior items made of rattan. They create an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort for any room. In terms of comfort, they greatly lose to their modern counterparts, but in terms of style they are considered universal.

Such a frame is perfectly combined with fabric elements, and if necessary, can be used for its original purpose.

  • Rocking chair. Today on sale you can find not only the classic options for such a chair, but also modern Scandinavian options made of plastic. Such a chair is well suited for a relaxed pastime listening to your favorite music or reading books, but it is not advisable to drink tea or coffee on it.

Materials

The described interior items are made of different materials, which are divided into 2 main groups, namely:

  • natural;
  • artificial.

Models made from natural materials are much more expensive than artificial counterparts. Most often these are exclusive custom-made models. Not every ordinary consumer can afford such options. Artificial products are cheaper, but high-quality models will not cost very cheaply.

As in all industries, the price will be consistent with quality.

Various materials are used in the packing, carcass and casing, depending on the model and its cost. The printed materials include the following.

  • Foam rubber - This is one of the cheapest fillers, which has its advantages. It does not mold, which makes it safe for health, does not accumulate dust in itself and can take any form. Such a material has several degrees of rigidity, which can be chosen for you. Sometimes in the name of the filling material you can see the inscription "PPU", which stands for polyurethane foam. This is one and the same substance.
  • Synthetic winterizer. Also inexpensive stuffing material, very different from PUF. Only very soft constructions can be made of it. The service life of the synthetic winterizer is about the same as that of foam rubber, and after that you will have to completely drag the furniture or change it to a new one.
  • Hollofiber. This material appeared during developments to improve the synthetic winterizer. Hollofiber has the appearance of balls. Having this design, products from the described material are well ventilated and have orthopedic properties.
  • Durafil. Products filled with this substance do not require a spring unit. This material in itself has spring properties. But if you want your furniture to serve you faithfully for as long as possible, then it is better to look for models where the spring unit will be combined with this material, since they are much more durable.
  • Spandbond - This is one of the varieties of non-woven fabric. This material makes it easy to slip on the upholstery.
  • Cotton and felt. As a rule, they go together and are an integral part of any filler. They close the spring mechanism, which allows you not to feel it underneath.

Choosing new furniture, be sure to pay attention to the material from which the frame part is made. Most often, it includes wooden elements in combination with metal. The wood component may include both wood boards and plywood. It is very important that the wooden boards are treated with paints and varnishes - this will protect the user from their toxic fumes. Expensive furniture models are made of wooden boards. But you need to make sure that the tree is well dried. Otherwise, the wooden frame will dry out and begin to creak.

Upholstery can be made of various materials (fabrics, leather or leatherette). Currently, leather trim is recognized as the best solution. This material is not only the highest quality and most durable, but also the most expensive. This is especially true for designer models. Depending on the model, the sofa can be upholstered either entirely with leather or leather inserts. The weak point of such material is the seams. Over time, they are wiped, and the furniture loses its original beautiful appearance.

Among natural fabrics you can also find:

  • wool;
  • cotton;
  • linen;
  • silk.

Among the upholstery materials are also used:

  • flock;
  • microfiber;
  • tapestry;
  • shenill;
  • velours;
  • Lamont.

Dimensions

The sizes of sofas and armchairs may vary. It is believed that by far the best choice would be a 3-seater direct sofa. Its owners say that this size is enough to accommodate the entire small family, especially if guests are not often. The length of such a product is on average 1910 mm, and the width is 900 mm. A 2-seater sofa is much smaller than its 3-seater "comrade", and almost always it implies a purchase and chairs. Its length usually does not exceed 1400 mm, and its width is 950 or 900 mm. Such models are well suited for small apartments.

Corner sofas of small and large sizes are presented in 3 different sizes - 2200x1750, 2700x1750, 2700x2200 mm. Such models consist of modules, each of them has a certain number of seats. There can be up to 3.

The corner part can be made in the form of a small table or have an additional seat.

Folding sofas when folded look no different from ordinary ones. In the laid out number of beds depends on the seats. Double options have a berth of no more than 2100x900 mm. If there are 3 seats on the sofa, then its size when unfolded will be 1400x2100 mm. It is much less common to find sofas with a berth of 1600x2100 mm. A bed of this size is most often found on corner sofas.

Armchairs also vary in size. More common are medium models. For a very small room, it makes no sense to buy bulky and large armchairs - here it is better to put small or medium models without huge armrests.

Colors and styles

Designers are very fond of combining objects by color. Anyone can use this technique if desired. To different pieces of furniture harmoniously combined with each other, the colors of the ornament must match the colors of this item. These combinations may not be too bright. It can be a color picture or an insert, but they must necessarily overlap with each other. So, choosing plain blue armchairs, you can successfully combine them with a gray sofa, on which there will be a blue color. This technique can work in the opposite direction.

It is important that there are no more than 3 colors in this design, and the third should be combined with the decor in the room. If you choose 3 elements of different colors, then it is worth considering the rule of their layout. One object can be bright, and the second should be the link between the rest. So, a blue sofa with a yellow ornament on it can be combined with a white armchair and a yellow armchair, on which there will be blue pillows or a blue pattern.

The configuration of bright and solid neutral colors is similar. Contrast combinations are more complicated in the execution and color matching, but they look much more interesting. It is important to remember that in the whole room there should be only one bright object, the rest can be combined with it. Otherwise, the room may be overloaded, and it will be uncomfortable to be in it.

Such an atmosphere can be muffled by such colors as beige, gray, smoky blue. The combination of only neutral colors may seem the simplest, however, this is an erroneous opinion. It is necessary to adhere to the contrast and neutrality of the tone, it can be a color of delicate fuchsia and peach, light emerald and purple.

Choosing the right combination is not so easy, and not for every room it will be appropriate.

Styles of upholstered furniture may be different.

  • Classic items more often made of natural wood. Carved parts may be present. For upholstery, expensive natural materials of pastel shades are used.
  • For a modern style, minimalism it makes sense to buy simple upholstered furniture. It should not have patterns, drawings, additional decor. The simpler the products, the better.
  • In style high tech it is worth exposing sets of upholstered furniture, made in approximately the same vein as in the case of minimalism. Here, too, laconic plain models without unnecessary decorations will look more. The best finishing material is leather.
  • The upholstered furniture looks colorful and richly in the baroque style. These are expensive rare wood products. Possible decorations with gilding, silvering, bronze. It is better to choose curved furniture that attracts a lot of attention.
  • For style provence It is worth choosing soft and comfortable products made from natural materials. This applies to the frame and upholstery.Products of light, pastel colors will look better.

We admit decor in the form of forged parts or natural prints on the upholstery.

Placement options

A good sofa in combination with armchairs always fits into the interior of the living room, but they need to be placed correctly. It is not advisable to place it too close to the window or with your back towards the entrance - this will not be psychologically comfortable. When choosing a place for a sofa, you need to focus on its model, which is selected according to the parameters of a particular room.

Another way to determine the location of furniture in the guest room will be a drawing made on a piece of paper or on a computer that will help visualize future premises. Consider several classic options for the arrangement of upholstered furniture in the guest room.

Symmetric

This is the most common way of arranging furniture in the living room and beyond. It is also used for large living areas. The whole point of this method is so that relative to a selected point, the double pieces of furniture are equally spaced. With this method of placement, one sofa can be placed in the center in front of the fireplace or TV, and 2 armchairs, floor lamps and other decor elements on the sides. It is important that the right and left sides differ as little as possible. When entering a room with this method of arranging furniture, the center point should be immediately determined by the eye.

Cabinet furniture should also be placed in a symmetrical manner. If a chest of drawers is located along one wall, then the other wall should be the same. This type of furniture arrangement will appeal to very pedantic people who appreciate the accuracy and severity of the lines.

Asymmetric

This method of placement does not imply chaotically scattered furniture around the room. This is a type of arrangement in which individual elements of the interior are arranged based on visual balance. This way of arranging furniture is typical for asymmetric rooms. In this case the arrangement of products should be as convenient and functional as possible, without the use of paired things.

Such an interior should be as harmonious as possible, and the described method of furniture arrangement is an equalizing factor between visually large and light objects.

Circular

This way of placing furniture focuses all attention on one single item located in the center. This item may be a large chandelier or table. This method can be implemented both in a simple living room and in any other residential area. In this case, the arrangement of objects can be symmetric or asymmetric. If you want your headset to look harmonious with furniture of various shapes, then large and visually heavy objects should be placed around the central object near it, and those that are easier should be slightly removed to the walls.

This method is used if there is a need to equip a living room combined with a dining area.

Examples in the interior

  • In a room where all the elements are made in light color, the presence of some dark element is necessary, which by its presence will not create the effect of a “hospital”. A set of one sofa and two armchairs of gray-blue color can very well be such an object. Located asynchronously, they visually delimit the room into 2 parts.
  • Voluminous 2-seater sofas and a white armchair will look gorgeous in a room where there is a pistachio or brown shade on the walls. A contrasting combination will be even more interesting if complemented by a dark wooden coffee table. An elegant rug with contrasting patterns can be placed between the sofas.
  • If you are a lover of daring and bold color combinations, then you should pay attention the combination of black and orange colors. For example, in a room with dark (almost black) wooden trim, an orange sofa and armchairs on high wooden legs will stand out brightly. The floor can also be finished with dark material, but upholstered furniture should be placed on a light carpet or in a separate insert made of milk-colored laminate (parquet).
