Chairs are one of the obligatory furniture accessories in the kitchen, their range is very wide and presented by models made of various materials and having various shapes. The most popular chairs with backrest.

Advantages and disadvantages

Traditionally, the kitchen uses chairs with a back. This is due to the following advantages:

  • they have a convenient design, since the back, being a support for the human spine, thereby facilitates the load on the back of a seated person;
  • they have good stability;
  • the back, among other things, is a design element that adorns the appearance of the product;
  • a wide variety of models allows you to choose the best option for a particular kitchen, for example, folding chairs are convenient in small kitchens, because if necessary they can be folded and removed, freeing up useful space.

But along with the advantages, there are also disadvantages. This is, first of all, their somewhat large dimensions, requiring a lot of space. Therefore, the use of such chairs in small kitchens is inconvenient, since taking up a lot of useful area, they create crowding. And they also limit the movement of the person sitting on them.

Shapes and sizes

The furniture market is characterized by a wide variety of models of chairs for the kitchen, which differ in shape and dimensions. However, there are standard requirements for their sizes. First of all, the height of the chairs in the kitchen should correspond to the height of the table. The convenience of a seated person directly depends on this. For a standard table, 72–78 cm high, the dimensions of the chair can be as follows:

  • the height of the chair from the surface of the floor to the upper edge of the back should be in the range from 80 to 90 cm, from the floor to the seat - from 40 to 45 cm;
  • the height of the back should correspond to about 45 cm;
  • the width of the seat and back should be at least 35 cm, depth - from 50 to 55 cm.

However, it should be noted that the width of the seat, as well as the height of the back, may vary somewhat. Chairs can be either high or low back. High and low back models look great in a classic kitchen. The backrest can be carved, with soft upholstery or with ordinary wooden beams. Chairs with simple and smooth backs, both high and low, emphasize the laconicism of modern styles.

Chairs with a low back and armrests harmoniously look in the kitchen in the modern and retro style under the 60s, where minimalism is present.

The shape of the back and seat can also be different: rectangular and square, oval and round. Sometimes there are chairs with a back and a seat in the shape of a trapezoid. Very beautiful chairs with oval and round backs. Smooth outlines, replacing straight lines, emphasize the aristocracy of the product. Classical chairs with such shapes are usually complemented by elegant thin legs and armrests with smooth outlines. These chairs create an atmosphere of grandeur, sophistication and are appropriate in the classic kitchen.

Important! By the structural form, there are such types of kitchen chairs with a back as: classic monolithic, folding, stackable (installed in a column).

Materials

Chairs are made of various materials. It can be wood, plastic, metal, vine and other natural materials. In addition, there are also combined models in which metal, plastic or wood can be combined in different versions. Let us consider in more detail the most popular materials.

Wood

Wooden models are characterized by a unique design and versatility of use in the interior. Such chairs go well with other wooden pieces of furniture: cabinets, a table, and a wooden kitchen set. They can be used in the kitchen with any style design - from classic to hi-tech and loft. Wooden chairs are beautifully combined with decorative elements from glass, metal, natural stone.

They are distinguished by environmental safety, reliability of construction, durability, long life and easy maintenance.

Such chairs are of high quality only if they are made of solid wood. But often, natural wood is replaced with chipboard. Such models do not have the necessary environmental friendliness and durability. Chairs are made from tree species such as beech and oak (they have the highest strength), birch, but it has less strength.

These models can be performed in a combined version: the base is metal, the seat and back are soft, and the legs are wooden. For soft upholstery, eco-leather, various dense fabrics, and genuine leather are often used. In the kitchen, it is better to use models with upholstery and a seat made of genuine leather, which has a long service life, high wear resistance and maintains its appearance for a long time. The fabric upholstery in the kitchen gets dirty quickly. Foam rubber, special (calendered) felt, spanbond and synthetic winterizer are used as a filler for seats.

Plastic

Plastic products are distinguished by a variety of shapes and colors. Plastic refers to materials that can be easily processed; light, comfortable and very practical chairs are made from it. Therefore, they are very popular among consumers. Plastic models also have the following advantages:

  • they have a low price;
  • have a reliable design;
  • are not exposed to harmful effects of moisture;
  • at low weight they have sufficient strength and can withstand weight within 90 kg;
  • do not demand difficult leaving.

The disadvantages of these models are the following:

  • easily exposed to various mechanical damages - scratches and even cracks form;
  • poorly tolerate temperature changes and can be deformed;
  • burn out under the influence of bright sunlight;
  • some limitations in style use: compatible with a style such as backlash and minimalism, not at all in harmony with the classical style.

Plastic models have a wide color palette - from restrained classic tones to the original bright colors. They add color and bring freshness to the interior of the kitchen. Models with rectangular backs will emphasize design restraint, round and oval - will soften the space. The material for the seat and backrest is usually polyvinyl chloride, and for the legs - metal or wood, but there are also models completely plastic. Plastic chairs look good in the interior of the kitchen, where there are many shiny surfaces. For a kitchen of a small area, models made of transparent plastic are perfect: they visually increase the free area.

Metal

Metal chairs are durable and easy to use. Metal products are a practical, convenient and inexpensive option for the kitchen. They can withstand weight within 150 kg, have a long service life and are easy to clean. They have such advantages as:

  • resistant to moisture and temperature changes, tolerate cleaning products well;
  • have a long service life - do not lose their appearance and are not deformed for many years;
  • have high wear resistance - creak does not appear over time, they are not able to dry out and loosen.

The main drawback is their limited use in style: the best option is a kitchen in a minimalist style, but it is not recommended to use a classic style kitchen or Provence. Another disadvantage is that over time, the metal legs leave impressed traces on the linoleum. The raw materials for the manufacture of these products are aluminum and chrome-plated steel, metal coated with powder dyes of various colors or with a galvanic coating. These materials have high strength and are able to withstand heavy loads.

Seats may be as follows:

  • soft, made of natural or artificial filler, covered with leather (natural or artificial) or dense fabric;
  • rigid, made of wood, plastic, particleboard, metal.

The backrest is either metallic or made of a material similar to the seat material. In some models, it is possible to adjust the height of the back and the angle of its inclination. Combined models may include such combinations as: metal and wood, glass and metal, plastic and metal. An expensive and elite option is metal forged chairs, which are distinguished by their original inimitable decor and uniqueness. They look luxurious in a Provence style kitchen.

Metal chairs with a soft back and upholstery made of artificial leather or dense fabric look great in the high-tech kitchen, loft and blend in beautifully with the decor elements of glass and natural stone.

Wicker chairs

The raw material for such products is natural material: vine and willow, bamboo and rattan, cattail and reeds. These models have a unique and extraordinary decor and are quite appropriate in the kitchen in the styles of Provence and country. Their advantages are as follows:

  • high degree of environmental friendliness;
  • light weight;
  • aesthetic decorative appearance, originality and originality, as they are made by hand.

The disadvantages are as follows:

  • high cost of products;
  • exposed to moisture and direct sunlight;
  • require complex care;
  • low level of strength.

By the type of construction, wicker models are frameless (thick and strong stems play the role of a frame) and frame models in which the frame is made of metal, wood and braided by any natural material.

Design and color

The design and color scheme of kitchen chairs is also diverse. Various decor is designed to ensure that the chairs are in harmony with the interior. On wooden models, varnish or paint is often applied. White varnish is especially popular. Such products are great for the kitchen and combine with any style. For carvings, wood carvings are often used.

The backrest can have a regular shape design, with a distinct contour or an oval, round and even curved configuration. Models with curved legs and an oval soft back have a beautiful and refined appearance. Models with a round back are often decorated with floral or figured ornaments. Often backs are made in the form of an intricate composition with interwoven elements. Chairs with oval or round soft backs with a frame and upholstery that contrast in color look spectacular, for example, the frame is bright red, and the upholstery is milky or lemon green. Often chairs are supplemented by armrests of various shapes: rounded, twisted or rectangular.

Important! The color scheme of chairs should not bring discord into the interior, but be in harmony with the color scheme of the kitchen, combined with a table and other pieces of furniture and decor. Usually bright colors are not recommended for bright design, and black chairs are inappropriate in a black interior.

How to choose?

One of the main criteria for choosing kitchen chairs is their comfort and size. If the chair is correctly sized for the sitting person, the legs touch the floor, the knees are bent at an angle of 90 degrees, and the seat with its front edge should not rest against the popliteal region. You should also take into account such nuances as:

  • more comfortable for the back are chairs with high backs, having a slope of not more than 5 degrees;
  • if the growth of family members is too different, then you can choose models in which the height of the back and the position of the seat are adjusted;
  • the weight of the chairs also matters - if you plan to carry them, it is better to purchase lightweight structures made of aluminum or plastic;
  • plastic and metal models do not require complicated care, just wipe them periodically;
  • textile upholstery is less durable and will last less;
  • for kitchens with limited free space, folding or stackable models are better.

An important point is the combination of chairs with a table. Under the classic wooden table, any wooden models are suitable. For tables of modern design (plastic, glass and other materials), the best option would be chairs with a metal frame, combined options are also allowed.
