Cats and cats are good regardless of whether they are thoroughbred or not. But for many, such a factor as belonging to a particular breed still plays an important role. Determining this factor by taking a kitten out of the cattery or buying it from your hands can be difficult. But still possible.
How to find out the breed when buying a kitten?
When buying a cat or choosing a mating partner for her, determining the breed of an animal is only possible in one way - see the documents. If they are not there, then it is best to abandon your decision. After all, there are such breeders who allow the mating of thoroughbred and simple animals. Then they give them out as an "elite".
And similar external signs will not be considered an argument in favor of purebred cats.
You can determine their breed by the following documents.
- Pedigree, which must be issued by the club where the animal is. It must be certified with a wet seal. The document must contain the name of the organization, as well as the name of the head of the club. Such documents are issued upon purchase of adults.
- Small kittens must have litter certificate especially if they were registered at an American club. For those animals that appeared in the European club, the usual individual metric is enough.
A veterinary passport cannot serve as evidence of the breed of an animal, since all data is recorded in it only from the owner's words. For more confidence, you can contact a felinologist who can more accurately determine the characteristics of a particular breed.
An ordinary veterinarian will not be able to do this, since the teaching of felinology is not included in the course of their curriculum.
Determining the type of animal found
First of all, it is worth saying that stray animals very rarely can be purebreds. By external signs, one can only determine which breed of cats belonged to the ancestors of kittens born on the street. Use for breeding such animals is not worth it, even if they are very beautiful. But such a cat may well become a good friend for his master.
At the same time, determining whether a cat belongs to a particular breed is still important, since this will help to understand what diseases animals are prone to. After all, there are such diseases of cats that are transmitted only by inheritance.
The following symptoms will help distinguish a purebred cat from a purebred cat.
- Color. In a certain breed of cats, it can be different, in addition, some of the shades are completely unacceptable.
- Body type. And this is not only the structure of the body, but also the placement of the ears, tail and other parts of the body.
- Wool. Shorthair and long-haired, as well as bald animals are distinguished.
A good specialist can easily determine whether a kitten belongs to a particular breed.
Determined by photo
In addition, you can determine the breed of a cat or cat from a photograph.
- If the photo is digital, then you can try to use a feature such as "search by image." If it was posted by the owner in a personal album, then you can contact him directly and find out the answers to all your questions.
- In addition, you can very carefully study the photo and determine the breed by external characteristics.
- Take a photo and go to the exhibition of purebred cats. There you can simply look at the appearance of the animals, and consult with the breeders who can answer questions.
Standards of various breeds
Breed standards include a number of characteristics that distinguish one breed of animal from another. They are composed of specialists who are members of felinological organizations. However, they all relate to various systems that have their own standards. In addition, not every one of them recognizes one or another breed.
For example, if in one club a cat is considered to be “unworthy” of documents and purebred status, then in another she will receive a pedigree and will be able to give good offspring.
The main organizations in the CIS countries are:
- CFA - This is the International Cat Association, part of the World Congress of Felinologists;
- WCF It is also considered Worldwide and accommodates up to several thousand different clubs.
Several breeds of cats were found for a number of tests. The most common of these are the following animals.
Maine Coons
Animals of this breed are distinguished by great devotion to man. They are quite curious, and they also love to hunt. Therefore, for them to catch a mouse or a small bird is not difficult. In addition, they also boast of it in front of their master. At the same time, they absolutely dislike being stroked, but they are allowed to do so. Maine Coons are not at all afraid of strangers, they love to play with children.

Their body is quite compact and powerful. The tail is a bit like a carrot: thickened on top, and slightly narrowed down. The face of such cats is chubby, has slightly rounded cheeks. The coat is very short and thick, and even after the cat is stroked, the coat will not fit snugly to the body.
Their color can be smoky, plain, white, but chocolate or lavender breeders are not perceived as natural. Such cats are not recognized as purebred.
Abyssinians
Cats are playful and curious. They can watch for hours the subject of interest to them. The Abyssinians are "taciturn," and therefore meow only in the most exceptional cases. However, if this happens, the meow is quite loud.
If we talk about the standards of the breed, then the head of such animals has a wedge-shaped shape, and the body is quite proportional. The eyes of the Abyssinians have a fringing, their color can be any green hue. The fur is short and fits snugly to the body, and the tips are almost always painted darker.

They love to lie in the arms of their owners and even take a little nap there. Persian cats purr loudly, like to play with a bow or run after a clockwork mouse.
Their appearance is a bit like a soft toy. There are three types of Persian cats. Some of them have the most common nose and belong to classic cats. However, now they practically do not participate in breeding. To date, preference is given to cats that have the following standards: a short nose, a large head with small ears and large round eyes. Eyes may be orange, yellow. In addition, blue eyes are allowed.
Scottish fold
These animals are distinguished by both a calm and playful character. Meow very often, but do it quietly. They love the company, they will be happy to be in the same room with their owners and with other pets, if they are in the house.

They love people with similar characters. The breed, as a rule, has a natural origin, but experts allow crossbreeding with other cat breeds.
These animals are distinguished by curly hair, long legs and the same long tail. Their ears are low set, the muzzle has a slightly elongated shape. The chest is quite developed and wide.
Bombay cat breed

They do not spoil the kids in the family, but they do not offend them. Bombies are very affectionate and non-aggressive. They can find a common language with other pets in the house, even with small dogs.
These cats are not afraid of change, easily get used to new places.
There are American and British Bombay cats. In both breeds, the body structure is quite elegant.Their size is average, and the eyes, according to the standards, are bright orange or golden. Their tail is very thin and straight. The fur is quite short, and the undercoat is practically absent. However, their main feature is their color. They are completely black, from the nose to the pads on the tips of the paws.
Munchkins
These cats are very sociable and curious. In addition, they are highly intelligent. They love both adults and children, in addition, they can live with other pets who are with them under one roof.
Animals are completely non-aggressive, but they can easily fend for themselves. They have very short paws, but this does not stop them from moving fast. In addition, they are loyal to their masters without a trace, so they will brighten up the loneliness of any person.
To summarize, we can say that you can determine the breed even by external signs. However, for breeding still need official confirmation of their pedigree. But even if this is the most common kitten, do not throw it on the street.
If you do not want to carry it to your home, then it would be better to give it at least to an animal shelter.
