Uvarovit is a rare bright green subspecies of pomegranate, which was discovered in 1832 at the Saranovsky Ural deposit. The chemist G. Hess, who described the mineral, called it a cook in honor of Sergei Uvarov, president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Empress Catherine herself (the godmother of S. Uvarov) highly appreciated the advantages of the mineral. The gem is also called the imperial mineral, the Ural emerald, chrome garnet, trautvinite and hanleite.

Kinds

Uvarovit was not subjected to taxonomic analysis, i.e. the mineral is not classified, since the color shades of the mineral are highly dependent on the places of its discovery:

  • for example, minerals of bright green hues (Ural emeralds) are extracted from deposits of the Urals;
  • dark gray-green minerals are mined in the Scottish deposits (Glen-Skiag) and are called Glenskyagites;
  • the brownish-green stones mined in India (Hanle) are called Hanleites.

The degree of transparency of the mineral, as well as its color, is diverse. Both pure water minerals and translucent ones containing various inclusions have been discovered.

Jewelry is the only direction where the mineral has found its application. He liked the masters because of the incredible natural beauty of the crystals. A feature of the mineral is that it is not processed, but used in its original form to create jewelry. Cutting gem crystals is an extremely complex task.

Nature itself presented this wonderful mineral in a finished, exclusive form.Therefore, in jewelry, the mineral is present in the form of geological aggregates, which are unique crystalline complexes (brushes). In other words, any such decoration is unique and as if breathing untouched nature.

The cost of uvarovitovye jewelry varies greatly. In combination with silver, products are sold at affordable prices. But excellent work in combination with gold will cost significantly more. For example, a relatively modest silver pendant with an Ural emerald is estimated at 14-18 thousand rubles, a similar pendant made of gold with a mineral can cost already 100-110 thousand rubles.

The unique and immediate natural beauty of the mineral determines the constant interest in it from collectors. Some of them have the rarest, most unique in beauty and structure stones.

Place of Birth

The mineral must be sought in rocks rich in manganese and iron. There are few natural deposits corresponding to the growth conditions of uvarovite crystals in nature.

  • Saranovskie (South Ural) Uvarovites are traditionally considered the best and are more expensive. Here, large specimens suitable for cutting are sometimes found.
  • Almost in no way inferior to them are the grayish skiagi from deposits in Scotland.
  • Small mineral deposits were found in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Turkey, and Norway. They get boiled in the deposits of Italy, India, Finland, Poland. Sometimes a gem is found in the mountains of the Himalayas and Pyrenees.

The properties

Uvarovit is an original Russian, noble-looking stone that resembles an emerald. This similarity is provided by the chromium contained in the mineral. When crushed, the mineral turns into a white powder. The Ural emerald has a glossy gloss characteristic of glass. A special difference from garnets is that the mineral does not melt under high temperature exposure and does not come into contact with acids.

Chemical and physical

The potassium contained in the boil-over allows to attribute it to one of the subspecies of pomegranate. The mineral also contains chromium, and the presence of titanium in it gives the mineral a reddish hue. The iron content in the mineral gives the stone deep shades of emerald. According to the chemical composition, urovarite is considered a complex silicate of chromium and calcium.

In the sun, the mineral shimmers fantastically. Often it is used in scientific optical experiments to study the conditions of refraction of light rays. Individual specimens are so pure that they are like a transparent drop of water. Others, with a denser structure, are somewhat unclear, which does not affect the beauty of the stone, but gives it a significant share of exclusivity.

In size, the mineral is small - from two to five millimeters, often small stones are soldered into medium-sized aggregates. Individual specimens of the mineral reach a size of 10 mm. The largest crystal with a length of 15 mm was found in Finland. Mineral crystals are usually transparent and give a glitter to the glass. The mineral has a hardness (Mohs scale) of 6.5-7.5 and a specific gravity of 3.8 g / cm3.

The color scheme of the gem is characterized by spectra of green and deep green shades, occasionally with some yellow component. The main feature of the mineral is that it is extremely rare in crystalline form, suitable for cutting and polishing. Therefore, masters use it in its entirety, as natural friends and brushes.

How to distinguish from a fake?

Uvarovit is not among the expensive minerals, but stone is not cheap either. By value, it occupies an average niche.This does not exclude the possible appearance of various fakes on the market. The following signs will help to identify a fake:

  • perfectly pure, absolutely transparent, crystals with uniform color, as a rule, are fake, because the natural conditions for crystal growth cannot be perfect;
  • the hardness of the mineral is higher than that of glass, so a real mineral leaves traces (scratches) on the surface of the glass;
  • Ural emerald brushes usually include stones no larger than 23 millimeters, and larger stones are a sign of possible falsification.

By thermal conductivity, you can distinguish a real gem from most fakes. The Ural emerald will remain cool in the hands of man; fakes made of glass or plastic will heat up.
