Many of us have heard of such an extraordinary mineral as carnelian. He is able to exert a therapeutic effect on the body, heal both mental and physical wounds. In this article, you will get acquainted with all the available information about this unusual stone, with its magical and healing features, as well as the physical composition.

Description

Carnelian, like its ancestor - chalcedony, appears as a result of post-volcanic hydrothermal processes in lava flows. It is believed that the name of this mineral came to our language thanks to the name of the majestic ancient city of Sardis (or Sardis, according to biblical records), which was the capital of Lydia. It was there that this mineral was discovered back in antiquity, judging by ancient records and finds.

At first, cornelian was used exclusively as a material for the manufacture of tools: archaeologists discovered hoes and improvised tools with carnelian crystals that date back to the 8th century BC.

Only later, after several centuries, this mineral began to be actively used in the creation of jewelry, amulets and charms. The beauty and healing properties of carnelian soon became known in many other countries. There was a time when tiaras, bracelets and carnelian necklaces were much more expensive than jewelry from previously known jewelry. In the IV century BC, this stone was comparable in value to diamond, pearl and emerald.

The famous historical figures who wore the carnelian are Cleopatra (half of her ornaments and the decoration of the rooms consisted of carnelian) and Tamerlane (carnelian elements were present in his belt and clothes). Even in modern Russia, this stone was popular - it was called a “cadnos” or “smear”, and was used to cut glasses, decorate icons and crosses.

In nature, there are several varieties of carnelian, which received their individual names due to the specific color.

  • Carneol. It looks like a red crystal, inside which as if there are real veins and droplets of blood. The name came from the Latin language, where the word cornus literally means "cornel berry" (cornel is a well-known red medicinal berry).
  • Classic carnelian. It has an original orange-peach or orange-red color. Of all the varieties found most often.
  • Battleship. A variety of carnelian yellowish and lemon flowers.
  • Sarder. It has crystals of saturated red or dark color, sometimes brown and chestnut shades are found.
  • Sardonyx. A kind of cornelian with characteristic horizontal white lines-belts along the entire mineral. The stripes can separate several similar shades in the stone or serve as a border for several contrasting colors. Stripes are white, brown or black.

Physicochemical properties

In its structure, carnelian is an ordinary chalcedony, that is, layered quartz of volcanic origin. The chemical formula of such minerals looks very simple - SiO2. Chalcedony themselves can vary significantly in color schemes: minerals of black, white (light), blue, and even blue are known.

The color of such stones directly depends on those additional substances and minerals that make up their composition, however, the formula itself remains practically unchanged.

The most popular carnelian color is red-orange or orange-yellow, such a shade was formed due to the content of a large amount of Fe2O3 in the mineral. Almost all stones have an exceptionally layered uneven structure, which is remarkably visible if not in appearance, then in a cross section. The most valuable chalcedony are monophonic models, they are found most rarely and are used for the manufacture of luxury jewelry.

And now it’s worth sorting out a detailed description of the physical and chemical properties of carnelian.

  • Belongs to the chalcedony family.
  • At least 90% of the composition of the mineral is silicon dioxide or SiO2.
  • The most common inclusions are ferric hydroxides.
  • There are colors and shades: black, green, blue, red, orange, yellow, honey, chestnut, brown, brown.
  • In its structure, raw stone is quite fragile. The average density is not more than 2.6 grams / cm³.
  • The fracture is conchoidal type.
  • Natural stones do not shine, there is a slight gloss if the stone is polished and processed.
  • The internal structure is matte, almost opaque.
  • Cleavage is absent.
  • Mohs hardness is from 6 to 7 points.
  • Resistant to acidic compounds.

Major deposits

The most famous cornelian deposits are found in India, Brazil, Uruguay, Egypt, Germany, Mongolia and Ukraine. Many of these minerals, like amber, bring ashore in waves.

The most popular are Indian carneols, which are able to change their color from dark to lighter when exposed to sunlight.

If we talk about the deposits of these minerals in the CIS countries, then stones are brought in abundance from the Crimea - there they are mined on the territory of the Karadag volcanic massif. There are also cornelian deposits in Eastern Siberia (the best jewelry cornelian in Russia is mined there), in the Primorsky Territory, Chukotka, Buryatia and Yakutia.

Healing and magical meaning

Many semiprecious stones have healing and magical properties, however, only a small number of these stones are officially able to help people. Carnelian belong to such minerals. Below you can familiarize yourself with the healing and mystical properties of this stone.

Medical

The healing properties of this stone were known several thousand years ago. In ancient Egypt, this mineral, powdered and mixed with wine, was used as a tonic and for the treatment of headaches and toothaches. Mention of the healing properties of the stone can be found in the works of Avicenna and Biruni.

To understand the meaning of carnelian already in modern medicine, it is worth recalling the existence of such a treatment as carnelian therapy. This is explained by the fact that the carnelian emits weak radioactive waves, which, at the right doses and proper use, can cure some diseases. In short, such radiation restores cells, regenerates old tissues, promotes the rapid healing of wounds, edema, and improves the condition of the patient as a whole.

There is also an unconfirmed theory that carnelian is able to stop the development of cancer cells.

Most often, carnelian treatment is used for the following diseases and pathologies:

  • gangrene;
  • trophic ulcers;
  • abscesses;
  • skin diseases: ulcers, acne, acne;
  • anemia;
  • diseases of the cardiovascular system;
  • pathology of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • kidney problems
  • infertility;

  • thyroid problems;
  • OA diseases and disorders of the vestibular apparatus;
  • cancerous diseases;
  • endocrine pathologies;
  • sepsis.

At home, carnelian is recommended for chronic pain in different parts of the body: trauma, chronic fatigue, overwork. In this case, preheated pebbles are applied to certain parts of the body. It is believed that stones placed on the eyelids and eyes are able to relieve fatigue, migraine, and even restore visual function.

Also, the mineral is used in the processes of regulating the work of the whole organism, especially for weakened patients: women after pregnancy, children, other patients after protracted diseases.

When choosing a carnelian for medicinal purposes, you should pay attention to stones with a large number of white veins - this indicates the content of a large amount of radium.

    Despite all the favorable properties of carnelian, they should be treated independently only with the permission of a qualified doctor. Such treatment is considered traditional only in a narrow circle of modern clinics, and therefore it will be rather difficult to find such specialists.

    Magical

    Healers and astrologers are convinced that the carnelian fully reveals its potential precisely in the love field. Too strict and sandwiched people, he liberates, opening their hearts to the whole world. For initially romantic natures, he is a kind of amulet, which protects against betrayal, betrayal and affair.

    This mineral is considered the most powerful family stone.It’s not in vain that brides are often given bracelets and necklaces that contain carnelian: he acts as a kind of bodyguard who will try his best to maintain mutual respect, patience and love in the marriage. Figures, crafts and other interior elements from carnelian are advised to be placed in the bedroom of a married couple: it will not allow passions and desires to subside.

    In terms of sex, the kind of carnelian such as dark red carneol helps most of all: it aggravates desires, increases a sense of sexuality and liberates the owner.

    As for the other non-loving properties of carnelian, orange chalcedony is able to protect its owner from the destructive effects of natural disasters: hail, rain, thunder, and even earthquakes. The stone gives travelers caution along the way, protects from exhaustion, injuries and injuries. Carnelians of red or brown color are real detectors of enemies and enemies. These stones are especially useful for novice lawyers: they will give more confidence to the statements, make the speech more logical and reasonable.

    As already mentioned, carnelian helps many people to reveal their hidden talents and natural abilities. He is not able to give a person any certain qualities, he only guides a person along the path of their implementation. There are notable cases when people who have not been endowed with any talents for many years suddenly began to sing or draw, having recently bought a carnelian.

    The magical properties of a stone directly depend on how it looks.

    If your mineral is cloudy or blackened, immediately wash it or just rinse it under running water, and then wipe it. A dirty cornelian can not only not have useful properties, but also be dangerous to humans. Do not be surprised that the promised magical properties of the stone are not justified. It may depend on your character (carnelian has a weak effect on initially strong personalities), the purity of the stone. Or maybe you bought a fake sample of the mineral.

In addition, he will help the Lions find a permanent and reliable partner, which alone can be difficult for Lions to achieve.
    • Virgin. The mineral helps this sign cope with complex intellectual tasks, improves intuition in relation to other people. Here the stone should be worn together with silver or platinum in the frame - such a tandem will allow the owner of the stone to cope with envious and rivals.
    • Libra. Carnelian is simply necessary for this zodiac sign as a supporting mechanism in decision making. Uncertain and impulsive Libra often face a difficult life choice, which the cornelian helps to cope with.

    The romantic side of Libra will also not be deprived of the help of the mineral: it acts as a kind of love amulet that attracts lonely hearts and drives away those who need unstable connections.

    • Aries. Here, the carnelian passes through the energy of the Sun itself, which allows Aries to maintain a great mood, find inspiration even in everyday things and not pay attention to failures.

    It is not advisable to wear cornelian together with malachite and beryl, these stones overlap all the magical and healing properties of cornelian and give it the same abilities as ordinary street stone - none.

    How to care?

    Carnelian, as, however, and all other chalcedony, does not need any painstaking care.

    The desire to preserve a stone in a beautiful appearance directly depends on its magical and healing properties.

    It is worth considering the main points that you should focus on if you want to buy and store carnelian jewelry.

    • The best place to store stone or jewelry from it will be fabric bags, where the stone will be protected from the external environment and not subject to physical impact.It is not recommended to put carnelian in caskets with other stones - some of the minerals placed together can create an unfavorable emotional field that will affect the owner of the stones. In addition, in such caskets the stones very quickly lose their appearance due to the fact that they constantly rub and hit each other.
    • The mineral must always be kept pure and cleaned of dust and dirt. To clean the carnelian, using flannel rags or microfiber sponges, you can take ordinary cotton wool. As a means of cleaning, it is best to take ordinary soap or a natural soap solution.
    • Do not wear jewelry made from carnelian and other chalcedony during the chemical treatment of rooms and cleaning the entire apartment. Harmful chemicals affect the texture of the stone, making it cloudy, rough and brittle.
    • It is believed that the cornelian, which draws its energy from Mercury and the Sun, needs to be charged in direct sunlight for several hours a day. For a longer time, you should not leave it, otherwise your pebble may simply lose its color.
    • Try not to drop stones on the ground. Carnelian seems dense and strong, however, with the necessary physical impact, this mineral can be very fragile.
    • By some experts, the cornelian is considered too active and emotional stone for constant wear as a decoration. Try to let the stone rest away from your body and replace it with other minerals.
    • Remember that even in a small pebble cornelian contains a huge amount of energy. Do not hang dozens of carnelian ornaments on yourself - there is a great chance that you will become not just active or smart, but irritable and cynical. In addition to this, the more cornelian jewelry you have, the more difficult it will be to take care of them. And even one unpeeled carnelian in a chain or bracelet can lead to a bad mood.

    How to distinguish a fake?

    Modern technology allows extremely high quality fake any minerals and precious stones. Sometimes, to determine the artificial stone, you need to call a real specialist in jewelry and mineralogy.

    If we are talking about semiprecious stones, such as carnelian, then manufacturers rarely use some cardinal imitation methods, and therefore it will be simple to distinguish such products from real minerals.

    • Carnelian is one of the varieties of chalcedony, which has a characteristic orange and honey hues. To obtain this color, iron nitrate is added to fake minerals - it gives glass copies of the coveted copper color. To understand a fake in front of you or a natural carnelian, simply rub it with an emery stone or sand it. Glass artificial samples will be easy to wash, and under the top layer you will find a completely different shade.
    • All chalcedony, including carnelian, even in finished form, have a matte surface with a wax coating, thanks to which these stones can be safely held in hands and not be afraid that they will fall out. At the same time, glass fakes are smooth, glossy and slippery.
    • If we are talking about a plastic fake, then it will be even easier to determine it. Plastic and polymers, even the strongest ones, have a low density - they can easily be scratched, and even chip or strip chips. But a scratch on a natural carnelian is extremely difficult to leave, while it will be thin and almost invisible.
    • Weight. Regardless of whether you have an unprocessed mineral model or a ready-made cornelian, it will weigh a lot. Fake stones, whether it is wood, plastic or even glass, always weigh much less.
    • Melody of sound. Everyone knows that plastic emits a dull and slurred knock when tapped. At the same time, natural stone, even processed, will sound loud and loud.
    • Price.Carnelian, although not a precious mineral, sometimes is quite expensive as part of jewelry - from $ 30 or more. Individual small stones (from 5 to 10 grams) are rarely more expensive than 5-6 dollars.

    To determine whether it is natural carnelian or another mineral, sometimes it is enough just to consult a specialist. He will determine the kind of carnelian, its purity, and also give tips on caring for this stone.
