A pink gem has recently begun to be mastered by domestic jewelers. And in America it is very popular - a ring with this stone is considered an engagement ring, brings happiness and love to the couple. Buddhist monks called the pink pebble the talisman that bestows enlightenment. We are talking about morganite, however, the mineral has several other names.

A bit of history

Morganite is a semiprecious stone that was first discovered and described in 1910. It is interesting that the stone was discovered a long time ago, however, it was recently assigned to the class of precious.

His name, which appeared in 1911, he owes to the American Morgan, the first philanthropist, banker. They say that this same Morgan, along with his family, was to go on a cruise around the world. Tickets were bought for the most powerful and modern Titanic liner at that time. At the last moment, the banker decided to cancel the trip. And when he was asked what caused the refusal, he tapped his finger on the pink stone that adorned his fireplace.

In addition, Morgan often said that wealth can be obtained through experience, grasp and a happy combination of circumstances. According to the rich man, one cannot do without a good astrologer. Morgan was known as a person who regularly consults with his astrologer, draws up various cards and so on.

Another name for morganite is sparrow (given to the stone in 1909). Its stone was named after the scientist who first discovered this beryl in the Urals. The scientist's name was Vorobyov Victor Ivanovich.

Finally, the stone also has a third name - amethyst-balsatin, which is due to its external resemblance to amethyst. The existing names seemed to scientists a little, and at the beginning of the XX century another one was proposed - pink emerald. Due to the pretentiousness and pathos of the sound, it did not take root, although from the point of view of gemology it most accurately characterizes this mineral.

Characteristic

Morganite is a mineral of pink-purple palette - from pale pink to purple, sometimes brownish. Acceptable in it are yellow and peach colors. By the way, peach-colored sparrows are a real rarity. In value, it surpasses even a diamond.

It belongs to the group of beryl minerals, which means it has characteristic features for them. The mineral palette is explained by the presence of manganese, lithium, iron and cesium in the impurities. Density values range from 2.6-2.9 g / cu. cm, the Mohs hardness is 7.5-8 units.

However, Vorobevit also has characteristics uncharacteristic of other beryls. It differs in the form of a prism, the admissibility of a different degree of transparency of different faces. Morganite is comparable in form to imperial topaz, but differs from the latter in that it is precious. However, there is a synthetic analogue - glass morganite, which is nothing more than an artificially grown nanocrystal.

Despite the high hardness, sparrow is fragile. All jewelry with this stone has a natural shade, the stone does not undergo a change in pigmentation. This, by the way, is partly due to the fragility of the mineral.

Morganite has a rich color palette, which begins with light pink (the predominance of manganese) and reaches dark red, purple (in this case, the stone contains cesium in large quantities). In addition, quartz is present in the composition.

Pink emerald is a radioactive stone. Only slightly colored fine particles are not a threat. If we talk about the level of radiation in large stones with a pronounced color, then in them it exceeds the permissible. In this regard, such morganites are not allowed to be stored and handled in places where people are located, and certain requirements must be observed during transportation (closed lead packaging, warning sign).

However, if you purchase jewelry with such a stone, there is no need to be afraid. Only stones safe from the point of view of radiation are available for sale.

If you direct a light beam at it, then the stone will be either completely transparent (transmitting light) or slightly cloudy. The mineral has an uneven and conchoidal fracture. Before jewelry processing, the mineral looks very unpresentable. It has noticeable scuffs and roughness. It is a polyhedron in shape, consisting of long prisms with parallel edges. With a large number of prisms, the stone may appear brown.

In the structure of morganite, there may be inclusions - gas bubbles, liquids. Such a mineral will be opaque and have a lower cost than a transparent analogue. In addition, sparrow-wood without such inclusions is easier to cut, for which jewelers value it higher.

The sparrow deposit is called the state of Utah in the USA, California, Madagascar, and Brazil. It is here that the largest and most flawless minerals are mined. In addition, mining is conducted in Afghanistan, China, and Africa. In Russia, there are no large deposits, there are only single specimens of morganites in the territory of Transbaikalia, the Middle Urals. In the former CIS, mining mines are located in Tajikistan.

The mineral is mined from igneous rocks in the same way as topazes, beryls, emeralds, aquamarines.

Healing and magical properties

Like most beryls, sparrow helps its owner maintain clarity of mind, improve memory, and relieve nervous fatigue.Provided that the morganite is correctly selected, it has the properties of a talisman - that is, it reflects everything evil that is sent to the owner from the outside. How to distinguish from a fake?

The higher the value of the jewel, the higher the chance of "running into" a fake. Since the average cost of morganite reaches up to 150-200 euros per carat, they often fake it quite often. As a copy, they usually take cubic zirconia, spinel, kunzite. If you know the cost of the latter, it becomes especially offensive - how much the buyer overpays in case of fraud.

Unfortunately, reliable information on the originality of the stone will be provided only by a comprehensive laboratory study.

One of them comes down to the direction of x-rays to the sparrow - the stone immediately becomes saturated red. When heated, the original, on the contrary, will lose its color and turn into transparent.

If you lower the original into a solution of bromoform, it will remain floating on the surface. This is due to the lower density of the mineral in comparison with bromoform. Simulation with the same test will sink.

If you look at a fake under a microscope, you can see bloating inside the stone. They appeared as a result of the use of gases. The original morganite will also have similar formations, but it is impossible to examine them through a magnifying glass. Only under the microscope.

Like most stones (with the exception of pearls and amber), morganite is cold. If you attach it to the neck, it will remain so for a long time. A fake will quickly heat up from human heat.

How to care?

Vorobevit requires simple, but regular care. Once a month it is washed under a stream of warm water. If the stone face is contaminated, it is washed with soap, using a cotton swab for convenience. It is not forbidden to easily clean the stone with a soft toothbrush without excessive pressure. If there are stains of fat on its surface, you can resort to cleaning with gasoline.

After washing, morganite is wiped with a soft cloth, polished and dried on an open surface.

To clean the energy of morganite, it should be placed next to rock crystal all night. This will allow you to "reset" the sparrow.

It is recommended to store products with mineral in a box or a special case, protecting from direct UV rays. It is important to remember that for different stones you need to have different covers, since each mineral has its own energy.
