Doors are not only a functional addition to the room, but also an important design element. Therefore, you should carefully approach their choice. About how to make the right decision and create a beautiful interior, we will tell in this article.
Kinds
The modern market offers a wide variety of doors of all kinds of shapes and types. When choosing a model in the hall, it is important to know that there are several types of structure.
- Corpulent. Such models are considered the most durable, durable and reliable. Moreover, they have better noise and sound insulation. However, they are also distinguished by their high weight and high price.
- Hollow or cellular. The frame of such models is made of wood, but inside is left empty or can be filled with filler from cardboard, synthetic or insulating materials.
- Combined. Such models are half made of natural wood, plastic and other materials, and the second part is framed glass.
The mechanisms
There are several varieties of door interior mechanisms. Consider each view separately.
Swing
This is the classic and most common form. The door opens in an arc, which is the door jamb. In the modern market there are several varieties of swing doors.
- Single leaf. Such doors are most often found in apartments, since they perfectly fulfill their function and occupy a minimum of space.
- Bivalve. This subtype is divided into two groups, namely classic doors with two identical parts and heterosexual models. The latter are more common at the entrances to apartment buildings or industrial premises, but in living rooms - infrequently.
- Pendulum. These can be either single or bivalve models. Their distinguishing feature is that they open in both directions. Specialists note that such doors are the most traumatic, therefore they do not recommend installing them in houses where there are small children.
- Stables. Such doors are considered a kind of double-wing models. They differ in that a window is built into one of the canvases. Such a door is perfect for installation between the kitchen and the living room, since it will be possible to serve a table without opening the door. You can simply transfer the dish from one room to another through the window.
Swing options are distinguished by a long service life, excellent sound insulation and ease of installation. Moreover, the price of such a mechanism is the lowest. However, such doors can be traumatic. They can also clap due to drafts.
And their main disadvantage is the fact that a relatively large space for opening is necessary, which is sometimes not enough in small apartments.
Sliding
Canvases of such models move down on each other along the walls. There are cascading models where some canvases are fixed and do not move. They are classified according to the following criteria:
- number of paintings - there may be only one sheet, two or more, if the doorway is quite large;
- rail layout - rails can be located above, below or both above and below;
- retractable blade position - when the doors move, closing each other, then this is a coupe model; the second option - the paintings are hidden in the wall, such models are called a pencil case, while the second option looks more attractive.
The main advantage of sliding structures is space saving. Moreover, such models are not dangerous for children. However, such options are more expensive than swing doors, their installation is more complicated and requires more work and time. In addition, rails on the floor can become a place where small debris and dust will collect.
Such doors do not have a long service life, breakdowns of the leading rails often happen, so you should carefully approach their choice. To establish open models, a free wall is required, where the canvas will move.
Further you can see an example of double sliding doors.
Folding
Such models consist of two or more canvases that fold like an accordion. Classic doors with two sections are called a “book”, and options with a large number of paintings are called an “accordion” or blinds. As a rule, guides are installed on top. These designs are the most economical, for their installation does not need a place to open or a free section of the wall. However, they narrow the doorway, thereby reducing the space for access.
And the more paintings, the more space the door will take when folded, and the less space will remain for the passage. Such options have poor sound insulation and thermal insulation, since they have many gaps.
This problem can be solved with the help of additional sealed gaskets, but it will not be possible to achieve the same level as with classical swing doors.
Materials
As a rule, doors are made of natural wood, particleboard, MDF, veneer or plywood. However, there are many options made of tempered glass, plastic, PVC and metal. Consider the most common options.
- Natural wood. This is the most popular material. Any species can be used, but ash and oak are considered the most durable. This is due to their density, beautiful appearance and long life. Cheaper counterparts are spruce and pine, but such materials can be deformed due to moisture.
- Veneer and eco-veneer. Such models are made of pressed wood. They have the same characteristics as natural wood models. However, they may fade when exposed to sunlight.
- Metal. Metal doors are quite light and durable.They are finished with various materials, for example, it can be artificial leather or veneer. Moreover, they are decorated with glass, patterns or stained-glass windows, so at first glance it is not clear that the model is made of metal.
- Plastic. Such models are durable, moisture resistant, good noise insulation and easy to care for. However, they are easily scratched.
- Glass. Such doors look stylish and original. Glass visually enlarges the room, so they are often used for small rooms. There is a wide variety of glass design designs. It can be frosted, tinted, mirrored, transparent or stained glass. Moreover, glass is often adorned with sandblasting. Glass models have the following advantages:
- practicality;
- durability;
- moisture resistance;
- simplicity in leaving.

Doors are decorated with carvings, metal and glass inserts, lamination, staining or varnishing. Door furniture is also an element of decor and can be done antique or in a modern laconic style.
