In 1784, by decree of Catherine II, the city of Gezlev received a new name - Evpatoria. This name was given in honor of the Pontic king Mithridates VI Eupator, who assisted the Greek Kerkinitida in the war with the Scythians, sending his troops to reinforce.

At the end of the 19th century, a resort area began to develop in Yevpatoria, and during the Soviet Union the city received the status of the best children's health resort. The sculpture perpetuates the feat of the heroes of the Soviet naval landing. The military operation took place in Yevpatoria on January 5, 1942. Performing military duty, the landing was able to divert part of the enemy forces from the besieged Sevastopol, which, in turn, contributed to the victory of the Soviet troops on the Kerch Peninsula. But due to deteriorating weather conditions, the successfully begun operation ended in almost complete defeat.
