It is common for a modern person to throw away things that have lost their presentation. Even if a single speck or small clue appears on clothing, it often goes to the trash.

The culture of consumption played a role in this: marketers and advertisers tell us that the wardrobe needs to be constantly updated, and not wear things longer than one or two seasons.

But is it really necessary to get rid of good clothes that can last a few more seasons if the defect can be eliminated on its own? Indeed, many of us have already forgotten that torn clothes can be darned and patched: this will save the family and budget and not clutter up the wardrobe with an abundance of things.

In today's article, we will tell you how to tear jeans with patches to their proper appearance. You will learn some simple and effective ways to repair trousers that even a beginner needlewoman can handle.

Remove the holes

The patch technology will vary slightly, depending on where the jeans are torn. Pants usually tear in places that are subject to friction or stretching.

Most often - this is the knees and the area between the legs. If in the first case the patch will be noticeable, even if it is done very carefully, then between the legs you can sew a patch so that no one will guess about its presence.

Sewing a patch is best done on a sewing machine - so you can do the job as efficiently as possible. At the same time, the model of the unit is absolutely not important - be this old mechanical machine, inherited from your grandmother, or a modern computer-controlled device.

In addition to the sewing machine, you will need:

  • a piece of denim in a suitable color;
  • threads in tone;
  • scissors;
  • set of safety pins.

Between the legs

Before you begin the main work, you need to give the hole a more accurate look.

To do this, cut off protruding long threads from its edges. Then the edges of the gaps need to be swept away among themselves so that it does not continue to increase in size. We do it manually. Stitches should be quite frequent, but wide.

Sew not tight: there should not be any creases in the hole or a hard, protruding seam. The torn area should be made as smooth and even as possible.

Next, you need to cut a patch of a suitable shape and size. It should be slightly larger than the gap itself. We will sew the patch on the wrong side of the jeans so that it is less noticeable.

It is preliminary recommended to fix the patch in place with pins - so you do not have to constantly ensure that it does not move during operation.

Now turn on the sewing machine, thread the thread and proceed to the thing (this is the process of sewing the patch). Select the zigzag mode and lay the lines along the entire surface of the patch.

You need to try to make lines as close as possible to each other. It is most convenient to use the reverse function for this; if one is not provided on your unit, you will have to start the line again each time.

At the end of the work, we fix and cut the thread.

On the knee

In the knee area, jeans are most often torn among children who do not sit still for a minute. Buying new trousers every time when such a nuisance occurs would be a real waste, because a damaged thing can be easily and quickly repaired with your own hands.

A patch on the knee, even if made with great skill, will almost certainly be noticeable upon closer inspection. Therefore, we offer you a way to fix jeans, in which the patch becomes a stylish design element.

To do this, you need a piece of denim in a contrasting shade. For example, patches made of bright blue denim will look spectacular on black jeans. You can cut a suitable piece from an old denim that you definitely will not wear.

  1. So, the first thing to do is decide on the size of the patch and cut out a suitable fragment.
  2. The patch should be the width of the leg, and long enough - about 15 cm. If it is difficult for you to evenly cut the part from the fabric the first time, first make a paper pattern. Do not forget to make a small allowance for the hem - about 0.5 cm.
  3. Fold the patch around the edges and bite.
  4. Now you can sew it to the leg. It is most convenient to do this on a sewing machine, but it can also be done manually.
  5. A similar method involves the presence of such inserts on two legs - so the result looks more finished and aesthetic. Therefore, do the same on the other leg.

If you have a large piece of leather, then it can also be used as patches on your knees.

What material can be used for patch?

Not always at home there is a suitable piece of denim, and spending time buying a few centimeters of denim in a sewing store is completely impractical.

However, experienced needlewomen came up with several possible solutions to the situation. Consider the most interesting of them.

We use the "native" fabric

The easiest way to find a fabric that is suitable in color and texture is to cut a piece from the very jeans that need repair. But you need to choose a place in which the absence of a fragment of material will not be noticeable.

The only such stretch of jeans is the space under the back pockets. From here you can borrow a little material without compromising the overall appearance of the product.

Instead of the cut fragment, you can sew any other fabric, because the inside of the pockets is invisible to others. The main thing is to choose a sufficiently dense material and tightly pluck jeans from the wrong side.

We use glue

Adhesive fabric, which is also called the "spider web", can be put into business only when we are dealing not with through holes, but with strong scuffs that risk about to turn into holes.

  • The jeans section that needs to be strengthened with adhesive material must first be steamed and ironed well.
  • Then a small piece of the cobweb is glued using the same iron.
  • It is recommended to fix the result by sewing the frayed place on the sewing machine with a zigzag seam.
  • Threads need to be selected in tone to the main material of the product.

How to sew decorative patches?

As we said above, a patch can perform not only a practical function: it can also be part of a design that gives an individuality to things. This is especially true for children's things, which should be beautiful and original.

There are many ways to create unusual patches using various materials. Here are some of the most interesting and striking solutions:

  • turn holes on your knees into funny monsters;
  • make a cute applique in a torn place;
  • close up a gap using elements of the patchwork technique;
  • Sew many small patches instead of one large;
  • mask small holes with embroidery.

Thermal patches

Perhaps the most elementary way to fix a hole in jeans is to close it with a thermal patch.

Thermal patches, or thermal stickers, are adhesive-based textile pictures. They can be made in the form of animals, cartoon characters, cars, various inscriptions and logos.

The thermal patch is glued very simply - you just need to attach it to a torn place and walk on it with a hot iron. If you are afraid that the edges of the hole under such a patch may go apart, first fix them with glue.

Lace patches

Another original method of playing holes in jeans is to decorate them with lace fabric inserts. The combination of rough jeans and thin lace looks incredibly impressive.

For this purpose, you can choose a guipure of any shade, but patches of white lace look best if the jeans are dark, or black if they are light.

Sew lace inserts in the same way as regular patches - from the wrong side of the trousers. Only the edges of the hole do not need to be swept away. You can even tear it a little to the right size and make a sloppy fringe around the edges.
